Zu den Sachen selbst (Back to the Things Themselves)
Phenomenology's maxim, in its original habitat: the Introduction to the Logical Investigations (husserl-1900-logical-investigations-vol1, Inv. Intro §2): "Logical concepts, as valid thought-unities, must have their origin in intuition… we can absolutely not rest content with 'mere words'… we must go back to the 'things themselves'." In context the maxim is anti-verbalist, not proto-realist metaphysics: word-meanings drift by "unnoticed equivocation," so the self-evidence of logical laws must be re-secured against "reproducible intuitions" — concepts re-anchored in ideational fulfilment. Its methodological partner is freedom from presuppositions (Voraussetzungslosigkeit, §7): epistemology excludes metaphysical, scientific, and psychological premises — but does not suspend the world ("the question as to the existence and nature of 'the external world' is a metaphysical question," simply kept apart) — the distant ancestor of the epoché, not the epoché itself.
Key Points
- What it demands: "an adequate phenomenological justification, a fulfilment through evidence in the strictest sense" for every premise (§7); the "origin" sought for logical categories is "a phenomenological origin… Not… psychological questions" (Prol. §67).
- What it does not demand: no bracketing of existence; side-references and natural-language starting points are expressly permitted (§7).
- The method it licenses: the zigzag (im Zickzack, §6 n.2) — since the founding of logic "must… make use of all the concepts we are trying to clarify," inquiry "repeatedly breaks with… systematic sequence… the new confirms the old, and the old the new." A silent key of the volume (named once, governing everything); the ancestor of the late Rückfrage (teleological-historical-reflection).
- The maxim's epistemological engine (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2, 2026-07-21): Investigation VI supplies what the maxim demands — Selbstgegebenheit: fulfilment as the approach to "the thing itself" ("This is the thing itself," §16), adequation as its limit ("the intuitive representative is the object itself, as it is in itself," §37), strict Evidenz as the object "in the strictest sense given, and given as it is meant" (§38), and categorial-intuition extending givenness to states of affairs, being, and the Species ("set before our very eyes," §§44–45). "Back to the things themselves" is cashed out as the fulfilment-theory of knowledge.
- The Heidegger stake: per edmund-husserl (§"Zur-Sache-des-Denkens Cluster"), late Heidegger held this maxim to be phenomenology's genuine principle and read the later "Prinzip aller Prinzipien" (Ideas §24) as its Preisgabe (abandonment) — the transcendental turn as betrayal of the LI's own maxim. Both poles of that reading are now primary text: the 1962 Protokoll's claim that Investigation VI came nearest the Seinsfrage lands on §§43–45 + §39 (being imperceptible yet categorially given, "experienced but not expressed") — supported as nearness, limited in that being's givenness remains an act-correlate (claim candidate
inv-vi-being-givenness-heidegger-nearness, routed to the audit Harvest). - The MP echo: the Phenomenology of Perception Preface's "return to the things themselves" — "to return to the things themselves is to return to this world prior to knowledge" — re-tasks the maxim from logical concepts to the perceived world; a re-tasking, not a repetition (the LI's Sachen are the ideal objects of logic and the acts that give them).
Connections
- is enacted by pure-logic's first task — clarification of the categories by "intuitive representation of the essence in adequate Ideation" (Prol. §67).
- is the condition of intelligibility of the LI's anti-psychologism — only re-anchored concepts block the slide from the logical into the psychological attitude ("rooted in grounds of essence," Inv. Intro §2).
- is a middle term between bernard-bolzano's objectivism and the epoché — presuppositionlessness-without-bracketing marks the exact pre-transcendental stage of Husserl's method.
- is contested by Heidegger's late reading (via edmund-husserl) — the maxim played against Husserl's own transcendental development.
Open Questions
- Is the 2nd-edition text's sharpened eidetic vocabulary (essence-contemplation "on a basis of exemplary… often freely imagined" intuitions, §6 n.3) already a step from Sachen to Wesen — i.e., does the 1913 layer bend the maxim toward the Wesensschau Heidegger indicts?
- The maxim's corpus-level recurrence (LI → Ideas → Heidegger's Zur Sache selbst! → MP's return-to-the-world) is a candidate cross-source motif — flagged for the Step 6a check / audit Motifs phase rather than minted unilaterally here.
