ID: time-as-late-mp-privileged-ontological-clue Title: Time itself, not (or not only) flesh / écart / chiasm, is the privileged ontological clue in late MP's mature ontology — a reframing licensed by the unpublished BNF "ontogenesis of time" / temps fondant note (Janvier 1959) and the IP 36/7 "time is the model of institution itself" formula Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: thesis-central / interpretive Created: 2026-05-05 Updated: 2026-06-02 Sources: morris-2024-wild-structure-melting-time, merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: wild-being, melting-time, institution

Claim

Morris 2024 claims that "for Merleau-Ponty time is the ontological clue to the way matter engenders a nature that can give birth to sense." This reframes the standard reception of MP's late ontology, which typically centers flesh, écart, or chiasm as the ontological clue. Morris's textual hinge is the unpublished BNF working note (Vol. VIII Notes 1958-1959 p. [253] "Janvier 1959. Pluralité des temps. Unicité du temps") on "ontogenesis of time" / temps fondant (melting / molten time), plus IP 36/7 "time is the model of institution itself," plus the surviving V&I notes that reference particle physics (V&I 33–34/16–17, V&I 235–236/185–186), plus MP's lectures on Bergson and Whitehead (BNF Vol. VIII Lectures sur la nature). The claim is that the temporal register subsumes the spatial-relational registers (flesh, écart, chiasm) as their generative substrate: there is écart because there is the slip-of-time-from-itself, there is flesh because matter is temporal change, there is chiasm because perceptual reflexivity is itself temporally-textured. The wiki accepts this as a candidate interpretation that gives MP's late ontology a primary clue distinct from the secondary literature's flesh-centric or chiasm-centric readings.

Evidence

  • morris-2024-wild-structure-melting-time — explicit statement of the claim. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a item 4 (+ items 24, 25; item 33 is the Smolin neo-Leibnizian-model entry, not the time-clue statement) + Pass 2c quotes on "time as ontological clue."
  • merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity IP 36/7 — "time is the model of institution itself" formula. The IP-side textual anchor.
  • merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible — the surviving V&I notes that reference particle physics (V&I 33–34/16–17, V&I 235–236/185–186) and the temporal thickness register (the "thickness of past, present and future" formulation in flesh discussions).
  • The unpublished BNF working note (Vol. VIII Notes 1958-1959 p. [253]) is not in raw/; the textual basis is Morris's reading. Per General Rule 16, references on wiki pages are framed as "Morris's archival anchor."

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Standard reception centers flesh/écart/chiasm. Carbone, Fóti, Johnson, Kaushik, Saint Aubert all treat the spatial-relational register (flesh as element, écart as separation-without-cleavage, chiasm as reversibility) as the architectonic. Morris's temporal-clue reading is corrective against this dominant tradition — and the strongest counter is precisely that this dominant tradition has substantial textual and interpretive resources MP's published corpus supports.
  • Single-source articulation, archival dependence. The temporal-clue reading depends heavily on Morris's reading of the BNF unpublished note. Without that note in raw/, the wiki cannot independently verify the strength of the textual evidence Morris adduces.
  • The temporal-vs-spatial dichotomy may be MP-side too sharp. MP's own late ontology articulates flesh as temporally-thick, écart as temporal-spatial chiasm, etc. — the spatial and temporal registers are interwoven in MP's articulations, not opposed. The "time itself as privileged clue" framing risks setting up a disjunction MP himself does not.
  • The claim's payoff partially overlaps with science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (contested under γ split, 2026-05-05), which previously gave Stiftung (a temporal mechanism) a load-bearing role within a four-element architectural framing. Under γ, the four-element synthesis is contested; the painter-side specificity that survives is preserved under claims#mp-painter-as-primary-witness-for-indirect-ontology (live, 2026-05-05). The temporal-clue claim's content (time as the privileged ontological clue subsuming flesh, écart, chiasm) is independent of the H_synth architectural decision, but its overlap-articulation depended on the H_synth wording. Under δ's three-tier expressive cluster framing (per claims#coherent-deformation-universal-operative-form supported), Stiftung retains its load-bearing role as the diachronic-mechanism register; the temporal-clue claim may be a sharper version of an already-tracked thesis rather than a genuinely new direction, with the architectural-overlap framing now γ-aligned rather than H_synth-aligned.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim:

  • Reframes late-MP's ontology with time as the generative register from which flesh, écart, and chiasm derive their structural specifications.
  • Anchors melting-time as a thesis-central concept page.
  • Strengthens institution and stiftung as primary-temporal-mechanism registers.
  • Connects to sb-1942-kinetic-melody-origin (supported) through the temporal-Gestalt register: SB 1942 already operative; melody as temporal-Gestalt is one of MP's earliest temporal-clue articulations.
  • Provides interpretive distance from flesh-centric readings (Carbone, Fóti, Johnson, Kaushik) without dismissing them.

Status History

  • 2026-05-05 — created at candidate (Phase 8 seventh run) after the morris-2024-wild-structure-melting-time ingest. Held at candidate because (i) the standard-reception-centers-flesh-not-time counterpressure is strong; (ii) the BNF note is not in raw/; (iii) the temporal-vs-spatial framing may be over-sharp; (iv) the overlap with science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm needs careful adjudication. Promotion to live would require sustained reading of MP's Nature lectures (which are in raw/) on the temporal-clue register, plus engagement with the published V&I working notes on time, to determine whether the temporal-clue framing survives without the BNF note.
  • 2026-05-05 — Counterpressure overlap framing updated to track γ split (Phase 8 eighth run; per Agent A's thesis-coherence memo + AUDIT_PLAN.md v1.5 user adjudication). The cross-reference to claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (now contested, 2026-05-05) in the Counterpressure section is reframed under γ; the painter-side specificity is preserved under claims#mp-painter-as-primary-witness-for-indirect-ontology (live, 2026-05-05). The temporal-clue claim's content is independent of the H_synth architectural decision (per Agent A §5.1: may proceed under any of α/β/γ/δ); the overlap-articulation is now γ-aligned. Promotion-to-live is not halt-pending under γ; it remains held at candidate for the substantive reasons above, not for the cross-reference reason. Promotion-to-supported, if pursued in a future run, is halt-pending until the architectural-overlap framing is γ-aligned (which is now the case after this run). No status change this run; confidence remains medium.
  • 2026-05-09 — promoted to candidatelive under user pre-authorization for the twelfth Phase 8 run. Independent claim-promotion-reviewer subagent verdict: PROMOTE — clean 3-test gate. Test 1 (contestable formulation) PASS — sharply contestable; explicitly opposes the dominant flesh/écart/chiasm-centric reception (Carbone, Fóti, Johnson, Kaushik, Saint Aubert) with a concrete rival ("flesh is the privileged clue; time is one register among others") fully formed in the literature. Test 2 (evidence traceability) PASS — Morris 2024 anchors verified at extraction-note items 4, 24, 25, 33; IP "time is the model of institution itself" formula verified verbatim in IP extraction note Argument 2 + Key Passages; V&I particle-physics notes verified at extraction-note line 802 (March 1959 Leray's report / strange particles); BNF unpublished note correctly framed per Rule 16 as "Morris's archival anchor not in raw/." Test 3 (counterpressure recorded) PASS — four substantive counterpressures including the post-γ overlap tracking that distinguishes claim content from claim wording. Reviewer flagged one minor follow-up: reconcile the IP 36/7 page-number citation with the extraction-note's ([4](3)) location tag — queued as a maintenance item. Confidence retained at medium (BNF note not in raw/; standard-reception counterpressure remains a real interpretive burden). See wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-09-twelfth-run.md for the full reviewer record.
  • 2026-06-02 — CR-033 evidence-anchor locator correction. Evidence bullet 1's anchor corrected from "Pass 2a item 33" → "item 4 (+ items 24, 25)": item 33 is the Smolin neo-Leibnizian-model entry, not the "time as ontological clue" statement (which is item 4 — the 2026-05-09 reviewer record above already lists the verified set as "items 4, 24, 25, 33"). Locator-precision fix only; no change to claim content, status (live), or confidence (medium). Per citation-verifier CR-033 (2026-06-02); see wiki/.audit/citation-anchors-cr033-2026-06-02.md.
