Claim

Per Inkpin 2026, the wiki's sedimentation concept should be read pluralistically: sedimentation names a typology of distinct structural operations, not a single structure deployed in different domains. The principal contrast is integration (where new sense fully integrates with prior sense; the canonical case is geometry, where each generation cancels and absorbs its predecessors) versus accumulation (where new sense settles alongside prior sense without canceling it; the canonical case is painting, where Cézanne does not cancel Manet). MP's PdP-doctrine that "only speech is capable of being sedimented" (PdP 221) is unstable even within PdP and is corrected by PdM (1950–52) and IP (1954–55). The cultural world's heterogeneity is therefore typological, not just diversity-of-content.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The pluralization claim is Inkpin's reconstruction, not MP's explicit thesis. MP gestures at the contrast (PdM 142, IP 117) but does not theorize sedimentation typologically. Inkpin's typology is constructive — a Wittgensteinian "practices" frame is imported to MP. The claim's stronger form ("MP's settled position is that sedimentation pluralizes by practice type") is contestable; the weaker form ("a pluralizing reading is licensed by MP's PdM/IP corrections to the PdP doctrine") is what the evidence supports.
  • The PdP exclusion-of-painting doctrine is real. Phenomenology of Perception p. 221 explicitly says "only speech is capable of being sedimented." Inkpin's reading — that this is a Husserlian-intellectualist residue MP corrects — is one option; another option is that MP's PdM/IP material is in tension with the PdP doctrine without being a correction of it. Whether the later material is settled position or unresolved tension is itself contestable.
  • Kee 2025 (already on wiki) qualifies linguistic sedimentation by tying it to writing, which complicates Inkpin's reading. The two readings are not strictly incompatible — Kee's writing-tied linguistic sedimentation could be the integration mode, with painting's accumulation as the contrast — but the joint articulation is not yet on the wiki.
  • The Wittgensteinian commitment is non-trivial. Inkpin imports "practices" and "forms of life" as the unit of analysis, with reference to Inkpin 2021. A reader who rejects the Wittgensteinian frame can read the integration / accumulation distinction without endorsing the practice-typing.

The sentence is absent from .extraction-inkpin-2026-painting-sedimentation-cultural-world.md (whose Pass 2c PdM 142 quotation, at line 146, is the entirely different "le propre de l'algorithme … Here sedimentation does not merely accumulate creation upon creation, it integrates" passage, matching raw Inkpin line 79), absent from .extraction-merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world.md, absent from the PdM source page, and absent from raw/maurice-merleauponty-the-prose-of-the-world.md. Its content is in fact Husserlian, not MP's: the nearest attested corpus locution is Husserl's Origin of Geometry at HUA 380 — "the whole of the cultural present, understood as a totality, 'implies' the whole of the cultural past" (raw/Husserl at the Limits of Phenomenology… line 2651). This is precisely the General Rule 16 failure mode (a plausible-looking locator-plus-quotation with no traceable chain), and it sits on the bullet that is supposed to carry the integration vs. accumulation contrast in MP's own voice. 2. Evidence bullet 4 misreports Inkpin fn 14. The bullet says "fn 14 records that Husserl's 'Origin of Geometry' is the model for integration; MP's PdM/IP painting passages are the contrast cases". Footnote 14 (raw Inkpin line 184) says something else entirely: "To my knowledge, there is no explicit thematization of sedimentation in painting in Merleau-Ponty's late works. However, in several contexts he seems to presuppose this is possible" — citing Eye and Mind 88–93, the 1958–9 lectures (1996: 51), and VI 261. It concerns the absence of thematized painting-sedimentation in the late MP, not the geometry/integration model. Nor does the named anchor rescue it: the extraction note carries no fn-14 content at all (fn 14 appears there only as a bare number in Coverage Notes, line 338, and in the Difficulty Assessment, line 346; the Pass 3 Diagnostics block at lines 270–286 says nothing about it). The bullet's anchor chain therefore terminates in nothing. 3. Evidence bullet 1 misreports §3's typology roster. The bullet attributes to Inkpin §3: "accumulation in non-identity-based practices (painting, literature, music); intermediate variants (history, philosophy)." §3's actual intermediate cases are tools and language (raw Inkpin line 123: "as hinted at by Husserl, while tools of a given kind need to be functionally identical … Similarly, language is an intermediate case"), reproduced faithfully in the extraction note's Pass 2a arg #14 (line 52). Neither "history" nor "philosophy" is typed as an intermediate anywhere in §3; "literature" and "music" appear in the paper only as Husserl's extension of the geometry model to "fine literature" (identity side, §1) and as fn 19's note on MP's confused remark that music does not sediment (raw line 192) — the opposite of the roles the bullet assigns them. The concrete example-set that gives the typology its bite is thus not the one the source supplies. 4. Quotation shape and edition-sensitivity (compounding). Bullet 3 renders IP 117 as painting "does not integrate and cancel its predecessors (which painting does not do)" — a garbled composite whose grammatical subject is inverted relative to the source. Inkpin fn 26 (raw line 199) reads: "'Knowledge, truth […] integrate and cancel their precedents (which painting does not do)'", and the underlying MP text (raw institution-and-passivity-course-notes… line 1208) reads "the truth which integrates and cancels what had preceded it (which painting does not do)". The substance survives a Rule-18 raw check; the quoted string as printed does not occur anywhere. Separately, both "PdM 142" and "IP 117" are Inkpin's French-edition locators (fn 12 / bibliography line 256: La prose du monde 1969; L'institution, la passivité, Belin 2015), but the bullets attach them to the wiki's English source pages — [[merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world]] (O'Neill trans., citation_scheme: page, whose own extraction note paginates by English chapters, e.g. Ch.3 pp.87–91 for exactly this painting/language contrast) and [[merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity]] (Lawlor/Massey, Northwestern 2010). A reader following the citation lands on the wrong pages of the wrong editions — the "bare page number is a trapdoor" hazard CLAUDE.md's Source Page Extra Fields rationale names explicitly. Note also that .extraction-merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity.md does not attest IP 117 at all, so the two MP bullets are not independent primary anchors: both run through Inkpin's quotations, which makes the claim's Sources: roster of three read as broader corroboration than the evidence chain actually supplies. Cumulatively: of four Evidence bullets, one rests on an unattested quotation, one misreports the footnote it names, one misreports the section it names, and the remaining one carries a mis-transcribed quotation under a wrong-edition locator. The claim's thesis may well be recoverable from Inkpin §3 (raw lines 119–125) — but the entry as worded does not pass Test 2, and a supported claim is usable on concept pages without provisional framing, which would propagate the fabricated PdM 142 quotation into the wiki's citable surface.

Inkpin's own text at the point where he closes the PdM reconstruction says the opposite: painting's works belong to "an integrated field," each painting "accomplishes the past's vow, is its proxy, acts in its name," and MP "is tempted by the idea that this field is unified by a 'single' or 'unique' task of painting the world that is common to all painting" (raw/datalab-output-European J of Philosophy - 2026 - Inkpin ... .md line 83, quoting PdM 139–142); and Inkpin then states that "'accumulation' is somewhat weaker than 'integration' in not systematically 'conserving' or 'containing' past meaning and acts" (same file, line 87). Somewhat weaker, and not systematically conserving, are degree-words: on the rival reading, accumulation is integration with the totalizing intention (PdM 145: "the intention to reveal the thing itself," raw line 81) relaxed — one sedimentation structure whose conserving/containing function is more or less systematic depending on the practice's artefacts. That rival explains every anchor the claim cites — PdM 142, PdM 139/140-141, IP 117, and Inkpin §3 — at least as well as the typological reading, and it is reinforced by Inkpin's §3 framing of geometry and painting as "two extremes of a range" with intermediates (tools, language), since a range with intermediates is the natural shape of a continuum rather than of a partition into kinds. This is not an outside objection the wiki has never seen: it is already recorded in two of the wiki's own artifacts and was simply not carried into the entry. Inkpin himself hedges in the same direction at the §2 close: "while both involve a material scaffold" (raw line 95). So the wiki home simultaneously asserts a common structure with variable content and uses this claim to deny that reading; the claim's contrast, as worded, is not stable even on the page that homes it. Until the entry says what makes the scaffolding-function unity compatible with the denial of "one structure deployed in different domains," a reader can take the whole Inkpin result to be the content-variation thesis the claim explicitly disowns. Both rivals leave the weaker thesis intact (MP/Inkpin distinguish modes of sedimentation that differ enough to block naive geometry-modelled generalization), which is why this blocks the promotion rather than the claim: live at medium confidence is what the current Counterpressure supports; supported requires the degree-vs-kind deflation and the scaffolding-unity reading to be stated and answered.

The claim re-grounds the wiki's sedimentation page. The prior treatment (a single structure deployed across domains) is replaced by a typology (a family of structures typed by practice). The cultural-world page's heterogeneity claim acquires a structural ground: the cultural world is heterogeneous because the practices that constitute it instantiate distinct sedimentation modes, not because of empirical content variety. This in turn supports claims#ip-pop-architectural-hierarchy's reading of MP's late material as architecturally articulated rather than thematically diverse.
