Claim

The disputed and spurious dialogues characteristically take a thesis the genuine dialogues leave aporetic or carefully qualified and either (a) assert it as a flat positive identity or (b) run it to eristic reductio. The Rival Lovers asserts sōphrosynē = self-knowledge = justice (138a–b) as a clean three-way identity — exactly what the Charmides problematizes to aporia. The Hipparchus runs "everyone desires the good" to the parody "everyone is greedy" and the self-incriminating "to blame greed is to be greedy" (232c). The Second Alcibiades imitates the Alcibiades I but displaces self-knowledge with knowledge-of-the-good and concedes that ignorance can be good (144c), straining intellectualism. The Minos reaches a positive definition of law (315a) on the headline τί-ἐστι where the genuine definitional dialogues stall. And the spuria imitate the elenchus as an inert genre and freeze diairesis into a lexicon. Read against the genuine dialogues they echo, the dubia/spuria are the Academy's systematization of Plato — the dialectic become flat doctrine, curriculum, and doxography.

Evidence

  • plato-rival-lovers — the flat sōphrosynē = self-knowledge = justice identity (138a–b). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-rival-lovers.md).
  • plato-hipparchus — "all love the good" → "everyone is greedy" → "to blame greed is to be greedy" (227a–c, 232c). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-hipparchus.md).
  • plato-second-alcibiades — Alcibiades I imitated with the theme displaced to knowledge-of-the-good; ignorance-can-be-good concession (143d, 144c). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-second-alcibiades.md).
  • plato-minos — a positive τί-ἐστι of law where the genuine definitional dialogues fail (315a). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-minos.md).
  • plato-spuria — elenchus-as-genre (On Justice, On Virtue, Sisyphus); the Definitions' sophist entry copied verbatim from Sophist 231d. Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-spuria.md).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • "Systematization" lumps texts of different dates and authors (Old-Academy to Hellenistic) into one tendency; the dubia/spuria are not a single project, and the family resemblance may be over-read.
  • The genuine Statesman and Laws also reach positive doctrine, so "aporetic-held-open vs flattened" is not a clean genuine/spurious boundary; the contrast is a tendency, not a criterion.
  • The Minos leg differs in kind: reaching a positive definition is not the same operation as flattening an aporia into an identity or a reductio — it fits "completes what the genuine leaves open" better than "flattens."
  • Single ingest wave; the reading is the maintainer's synthesis against the genuine dialogues, not a thesis any dubium states of itself.

Payoff

Makes the dubia/spuria legible not as failed Plato but as a reception stratum — evidence for how the early Academy taught and hardened Socratic–Platonic dialectic. Explains the shared signature (flat identities, an eristic edge, doxographic residue) that distinguishes them from the genuine aporetic dialogues, and gives an otherwise low-value tail a single interpretive function. Visible only by reading each dubium against the genuine dialogue it echoes.

Status History

  • 2026-06-22 — created at candidate (ingest Wave 7). Contestable (heterogeneous corpus lumped; the genuine late dialogues also reach positive doctrine; the Minos leg is a different operation); five extraction-anchored instances across the dubia and spuria.
  • 2026-06-23 — promoted candidate→live in audit v1.9 Phase 8: cleared the 3-test gate with ≥2 anchored evidence bullets from ≥2 distinct dialogue sources (independently reviewer-verified against extraction notes); maintainer-authorized cap-exceed for the Plato cohort.
