The Charmides reaches "knowledge of good and evil" only by elimination and aporetically — staging virtue-as-knowledge as the unreached terminus the Protagoras later develops positively

ID: plato-charmides-anticipates-intellectualism Title: The Charmides reaches "knowledge of good and evil" only by elimination and aporetically — staging virtue-as-knowledge as the unreached terminus the Protagoras later develops positively Status: live Confidence: low Claim type: genealogical Created: 2026-06-22 Updated: 2026-06-23 Sources: plato-charmides, plato-protagoras Wiki homes: temperance-sophrosyne, socratic-intellectualism

Claim

The Charmides arrives at the science of good and evil (174b) — the identification virtue-as-knowledge rests on — but reaches it only negatively: by eliminating the "science of science" (epistēmē epistēmēs) as non-beneficial, naming the beneficial science in two words, and then stopping in aporia. The Protagoras develops the same identification positively (the unity of the virtues, the measuring-art). So the Charmides stages virtue-as-knowledge as the unreached terminus of a failed definition — a genealogical anticipation, not yet an argument.

Evidence

  • plato-charmides — the science-of-science refuted on benefit; "knowledge of good and evil" named as the beneficial science (174b–d). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-charmides.md).
  • plato-protagoras — virtue-as-knowledge developed positively (330c–360e); the page's existing source.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • A low-confidence genealogical reading: the Charmides' two-word gesture toward "good and evil" may be a dialectical placeholder, not a deliberate anticipation of the Protagoras.
  • Chronology is insecure (Cooper's anti-developmentalism); "anticipates" assumes an ordering the texts do not fix.
  • The connection runs through the maintainer's synthesis; no Platonic text links the two.

Payoff

Reads temperance-sophrosyne's aporetic close not as a dead end but as the negative imprint of the thesis the Protagoras fills in — making the Charmides' "knowledge of good and evil" a hinge to the intellectualist register rather than a loose end.

Status History

  • 2026-06-22 — created at candidate (ingest Wave 4). Held at low confidence (placeholder-vs-anticipation; insecure chronology; synthesis-dependent); both dialogues extraction/source-anchored.
  • 2026-06-23 — promoted candidate→live in audit v1.9 Phase 8 (confidence held at low): the 3-test passes (Charmides 174b–d + Protagoras, both anchored, reviewer-verified), maintainer-authorized despite the claim's own "genealogical anticipation, not yet an argument" self-framing; confidence stays low pending a sharpened contestable thesis.
