Claim
Across the spurious appendix the operative move is systematizing or imitating genuine Socratic–Platonic dialectic rather than doing it. The Definitions freeze diairesis into a ~185-term lexicon (the sophist entry copied verbatim from Sophist 231d). On Justice, On Virtue, Sisyphus, and Eryxias imitate the elenctic "what is X?" as a schematic genre sharing one engine — "only the knower acts/judges/uses rightly." On Virtue recapitulates the Meno's theia moira. The Axiochus assembles mutually-incompatible school-consolations (Epicurean + Platonic) into a treasury. The spuria are thus a reception stratum — what Platonic dialectic looked like once it became curriculum and doxography.
Evidence
- plato-spuria — Definitions 414d (horos = genus + differentia), 415c (= Sophist 231d verbatim); On Justice/On Virtue/Sisyphus elenchus-as-genre; On Virtue 377b–378c ≈ Meno 93d–94e; Axiochus eclectic Epicurean+Platonic consolation (369b, 365e). Extraction-anchored (

Counterpressure / Limits
- Single-source (one survey extraction): the "stratum" reading rests on one pass over nine heterogeneous works.
- The works span Old-Academy to early-imperial — "the Academy's method" lumps a roughly 300-year range under one label.
- "Imitation vs. doing" is partly an evaluative judgment inherited from the editor's blurbs, not independently established.
Payoff
Gives the otherwise low-value spuria a single interpretive function — evidence for the reception of Platonic method — and a contrastive use (live diairesis vs. its lexical residue; motivated elenchus vs. elenchus-as-genre). Flag for audit Phase 8 against any other reception-layer material in the corpus.
