The Socratic elenchus fails to define any single evaluative concept — piety, courage, temperance, the fine, friendship — and that systematic failure is the philosophical result, motivating the Forms and the unity of virtue
ID: plato-elenchus-fails-to-define-the-virtues Title: The Socratic elenchus fails to define any single evaluative concept — piety, courage, temperance, the fine, friendship — and that systematic failure is the philosophical result, motivating the Forms and the unity of virtue Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive / structural-parallel Created: 2026-06-22 Updated: 2026-06-23 Sources: plato-euthyphro, plato-laches, plato-charmides, plato-lysis, plato-hippias-major, plato-clitophon Wiki homes: elenchus, aporia, socratic-definition, protreptic
Claim
The three definitional dialogues run the same machine — elenchus → "what is X?" demand → aporia — on three different virtues (piety in the Euthyphro, courage in the Laches, temperance in the Charmides) and fails every time. The failure is not incidental but systematic and diagnostic: it is the wave's evidence that single-virtue definition, pursued by the elenchus alone, cannot succeed — which makes two later Platonic moves intelligible as responses to it: the postulation of the Forms (a stable definiendum the elenchus kept groping for) and the unity of the virtues (each virtue presses into "knowledge of good and evil," so none is separately definable). The aporia is a result, not a frustration. Wave 5 widens the pattern beyond the virtues: the Lysis runs the same machine on friendship (a relation) and the Hippias Major on the fine (an evaluative property), failing identically — so the collapse tracks single-eidos definition by elenchus as such, not the virtues specifically. (The Lysis reaches aporia without the standard person-testing — Socrates spins and dismantles the candidates himself — a method-variant, not a counterexample.) Wave 7 adds an in-corpus witness rather than a sixth instance: the (disputed) Clitophon dramatizes a "Socratic hero" who, arguing in Socrates' own dialectical way, complains that Socratic protreptic exhorts toward justice but never delivers what justice is or its peculiar product (the ergon-regress, 409a–b), and turns to Thrasymachus while Socrates falls silent. The Clitophon does not itself fail-to-define, so it is not a sixth evidence leg; it gives the failure a voice, strengthening the "systematic, felt result" reading over "dramatic repetition" — with the † caveat that a disputed text's testimony is weak canonical evidence.
Evidence
- plato-euthyphro — five definitions of piety refuted to aporia (6d–e, 11a–b, 15c–16a). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-euthyphro.md). - plato-laches — courage's definitions collapse; the unity-of-virtue squeeze (198a–199e). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-laches.md). - plato-charmides — temperance's definitions fail; the "knowledge of good and evil" terminus (174b, 175b). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-charmides.md). - plato-lysis — six candidate accounts of friendship constructed and dismantled to aporia, "what a friend is we have not yet been able to find out" (223b). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-lysis.md). - plato-hippias-major — every candidate definition of the fine refuted; "what's fine is hard" (304e). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-hippias-major.md).
Counterpressure / Limits
- The failures may be dramatic (Plato modeling inquiry) rather than a unified argument that single-virtue definition is impossible; each dialogue has its own local reasons for stalling.
- "Motivates the Forms / the unity of virtue" is a retrospective reading; the dialogues draw no such conclusion, and the connection runs through the maintainer's synthesis, not an explicit Platonic text.
- The Charmides/Laches point toward unity-of-virtue, while the Euthyphro (piety as a part of justice) points toward division — so the three failures may not share one moral.
- The Wave-5 widening strengthens the systematic-not-dramatic reading (the same failure on non-virtue concepts), but introduces its own caveats: the Hippias Major's authenticity is disputed, and the Lysis uses a non-standard elenchus (no person-testing) — so the "same machine" is, in two of the five cases, a near-relative rather than the identical procedure.
- Boundary case (Wave 6): the Alcibiades I (disputed authorship) runs the same refutation-machine on Alcibiades' ignorance of the just, but it lands a positive protreptic result — the turn to self-cultivation (135e) — rather than aporia. This is a constructive elenchus. Either it is a counterexample to "the definitional elenchus terminates in aporia," or (more plausibly, given the † authorship and that the Alcibiades is protreptic, not a "what is X?" dialogue) it belongs to a later/Academic register outside the genuine definitional pattern. Resonates with the Gorgias' "one logos survives refutation" already in elenchus's Open Questions. This does not supply a sixth leg of evidence (the Alcibiades does not fail-to-define) but it complicates the "aporia is the result" reading; the claim survives because the boundary case is disputed and generically distinct.
Payoff
Turns three separately-aporetic dialogues into one corpus-level result: the Socratic definitional project's collapse is the negative space the Forms and the unity-thesis are shaped to fill. Visible only by reading the three definitional dialogues together — no single one shows it.

candidate(ingest Wave 4). Contestable (systematic result vs dramatic repetition; retrospective reading; division-vs-unity tension); three extraction notes anchor it. - 2026-06-22 — extended (ingest Wave 5) with the Lysis (friendship) and Hippias Major (the fine); Title broadened from "virtues" to "evaluative concepts." Now five extraction-anchored instances; passes the 3-test
livegate — flagged as a candidate for promotion toliveat the next audit Phase 8 (held atcandidatehere per ingest-time conservatism). - 2026-06-22 — counterpressure extended (ingest Wave 6) with the Alcibiades I constructive-elenchus boundary case (disputed authorship; protreptic, not definitional). Does not change the five-instance evidence base or the
live-readiness; sharpens the systematic-vs-local question.Updatedunchanged (same day). - 2026-06-22 — scope extended (ingest Wave 7): the (disputed) Clitophon added as the corpus's in-corpus witness to the protreptic/instruction gap (homed also on the new protreptic page; plato-clitophon added to Sources). Strengthens the systematic-not-dramatic reading; does NOT add a sixth fail-to-define leg, so the five-instance evidence base and
live-readiness are unchanged.Updatedunchanged (same day). - 2026-06-23 — promoted candidate→live in audit v1.9 Phase 8: cleared the 3-test gate with ≥2 anchored evidence bullets from ≥2 distinct dialogue sources (independently reviewer-verified against extraction notes); maintainer-authorized cap-exceed for the Plato cohort.
