Claim
Chouraqui's nihilism — the fetishistic theory of care, in which the hermeneutic is subjected to the epistemic and meaning is found, not made — is the structural inverse of the recognition+institution unity he reads in mature Merleau-Ponty. Chouraqui glosses the pair himself: "institution (or meaning-attribution), and recognition (or meaning discovery) are one thing" (p.68). Nihilism collapses that unity onto its epistemic/recognition-as-discovery pole alone (meaning retrieved, never attributed); the strong-hermeneutic position ("sedimentations all the way down," meaning made) is its negation. The same author deploys the same recognition/institution pair in two 2025 papers with opposite valence.

The explicit institution+recognition=one gloss in the nihilism context is one passage (p.68); the "structural inverse" framing is the maintainer's synthesis across two papers (Chouraqui never himself cross-links the two).
