Agnosia is the unifying counter-ideal of Merleau-Ponty's ethics across PhP, HT, AD, the *Inédits*, and the Note on Machiavelli

ID: agnosia-as-mp-ethical-counter-ideal Title: Agnosia is the unifying counter-ideal of Merleau-Ponty's ethics across PhP, HT, AD, the Inédits, and the Note on Machiavelli Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: corrective + interpretive Created: 2026-05-04 Updated: 2026-05-04 Sources: chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider, merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception, merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic, merleau-ponty-1964-primacy-of-perception, merleau-ponty-1964-signs, merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-i-1946-1947, merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949 Wiki homes: agnosia-mp, healing-schneider, schneider-case, humanism-in-extension, recognition-and-institution, play-as-political-virtue

Claim

Across the Phenomenology of Perception (1945), Humanism and Terror (1947), the recently published Inédits 1946–1949 (Mimesis 2022), the Note on Machiavelli (1949, in Signs), and Adventures of the Dialectic (1955), Merleau-Ponty deploys a single normative diagnosis — agnosia as the inability to combine recognition of reality with institution of meaning. The clinical case of Schneider is the paradigm; the diagnosis recurs explicitly under different vocabularies in MP's analyses of Sartre, Trotsky, Lenin, the Soviet Commissar, Descartes (PhP p. 205 ff.), and Piaget (PhP p. 371). MP's positive ethical project is therefore one project — what Chouraqui 2025 calls "healing Schneider" — opposing agnosiastic tendencies in clinical, political, existential, and ontological registers.

Evidence

  • chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider — §1 (the three-claim roadmap declaring agnosia as the normative paradigm), §2.1 (Schneider as axiological), §2.2 (the political extension), §3 (the positive program), §4 (the meta-ethical defense). Chouraqui makes the unifying interpretation explicit; the Inédits are the textual basis foreclosing the option of treating PhP's analysis as self-standing.
  • merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception — Schneider analysis (Part One Ch III); the cross-references to Sartre at p. 137, to Descartes at p. 205 ff., to Piaget at p. 371; "the death of consciousness" at p. 74.
  • Inédits 1946–1949 (Mimesis 2022) — Vol. 2 pp. 305, 308, 340, 341 on the Soviet failure to overcome the antithesis of subjective and objective (Trotsky's horse motif); Vol. 1 pp. 287, 296 on the serious man (Stendhal, Beauvoir cited by MP); Vol. 1 p. 198 on the HT–Note on Machiavelli continuity. The Inédits are not yet a wiki source page; per the artifact-conservatism rule, these specific attributions should be re-checked when the Inédits are ingested.
  • merleau-ponty-1964-primacy-of-perception — Ch 7 "The Yogi and the Proletarian" (= HT Ch 5); the Yogi/Commissar polarity as the political instance of agnosia.
  • merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic — "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism" essay; "the circle of knowledge and reality" at p. 29.
  • merleau-ponty-1964-signs — "Note sur Machiavel" (1949) as the test case for the positive counter-virtue (virtu / higher seriousness); "On Indochina" at p. 520 for sens du réel / respect du réel.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Standard reading. Most MP scholarship treats the Schneider analysis as a descriptive case for motor-intentionality and the intentional-arc, not as an ethical paradigm. The standard reading is well-grounded in PhP itself and is not directly challenged until the Inédits are made available.
  • Continuity vs. development. MP's ethics may be more discontinuous than Chouraqui's reading allows. AD's Epilogue (1955) explicitly revises the 1947 stance (see humanism-in-extension § "The Explicit Revision in Adventures of the Dialectic (1955)"). If MP's politics undergoes substantive revision rather than just elaboration, the unifying-thesis claim is weaker.
  • Late-ontology displacement. The V&I-era turn to wild-being / flesh-as-element arguably displaces the humanist-ethical vocabulary entirely; agnosia may be a 1945–1955-period figure rather than a career-spanning one.
  • Inédits anchoring. Chouraqui's specific attributions to Inédits Vol. 1 pp. 198, 287, 296 and Vol. 2 pp. 305, 308, 340, 341, 520 are not yet directly verifiable on the wiki. If a future ingest finds the citations differ in context or emphasis, the claim's strength would be qualified.
  • Razavi 2023 ("From substitute to supplement") offers an adjacent normative reading of Schneider via the substitute/supplement distinction; cross-source agreement strengthens the claim, but Razavi and Chouraqui differ on the form of the immanent-pathology argument. The wiki should track both.

Payoff

If accepted, this claim:

  • Supplies an interpretive backbone connecting schneider-case, humanism-in-extension, ultrabolshevism, institution, primacy-of-perception, good-ambiguity, and the recently published Inédits under a single ethical-political reading.
  • Makes Chouraqui's "list of Schneiders" — Sartre, Trotsky, Lenin, the Commissar, Descartes, Piaget — visible as a single diagnostic catalogue rather than scattered polemics.
  • Establishes that MP has an ethics (not just scattered observations), making him directly engageable with the normative-ethics tradition.
  • Connects MP's clinical analyses to feminist embodiment phenomenology (Young) via the structural-parallel Chouraqui 2021 already establishes for schneider-case.
  • Foregrounds the Inédits 1946–1949 as a load-bearing primary source whose ingestion is high-priority for MP scholarship.

Status History

  • 2026-05-04 — created as candidate from the chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider ingest. Promotion to live requires (a) corroboration from a second source on the unifying-thesis claim (e.g., direct Inédits ingest verifying the Vol. 1 p. 198 and Vol. 2 attestations Chouraqui 2025 cites) or (b) targeted raw-source check of the cross-references in PhP (pp. 205, 371) confirming the "list of Schneiders" inventory.
  • 2026-05-04 (Phase 8 run, later same day) — promoted to live following the merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-i-1946-1947 and merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949 ingests. The promotion path (a) — direct Inédits ingest verifying the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 attestations Chouraqui 2025 cites — is now discharged. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the unifying-thesis claim is contestable against the standard descriptive-only reading of Schneider; (2) every evidence bullet now anchors in extraction notes — Inédits I covers Vol. 1 p. 198 (HT–Note on Machiavelli continuity), pp. 287, 296 (Stendhal/Beauvoir on seriousness); Inédits II covers Vol. 2 pp. 305, 308, 340, 341, 520 (Trotsky's horse / Soviet failure / Hegel-on-play); (3) Counterpressure documents the standard-reading objection, the continuity-vs-development tension (AD's 1955 explicit revision of HT 1947), the late-ontology displacement question, and the Razavi 2023 adjacent reading. Confidence stays medium because the unifying-thesis is Chouraqui's synthesis, not yet a settled secondary consensus; promotion to supported would require either Razavi 2023 ingestion (if it endorses the unifying reading) or a third-party scholar articulating the same agnosia-as-counter-ideal frame.
