The world's fragility is the *absence of its own skin* — the world is the factorial of all our skins (Nancy 2021)
ID: nancy-fragile-skin-world-as-factorial-of-skins Title: The world's fragility is the absence of its own skin — the world is the factorial of all our skins (Nancy 2021) Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-01 Updated: 2026-06-01 Sources: nancy-2021-fragile-skin-of-the-world Wiki homes: fragile-skin-of-the-world, allonomy, jean-luc-nancy
Claim
Nancy's title figure does not name a thin-but-real protective membrane around the world. The world's fragility is the absence of its own skin: the world has no skin of its own because its "skin" is the relations between us — the world is the factorial of all our skins. The political-diagnostic consequence is counterintuitive: to "protect the world" by self-sufficiency (sealing the pores, the animal-machine self-enclosure of interactive-connected interfaces) is precisely to asphyxiate and kill the world. Fragility is therefore not a defect to be repaired by reinforcement but the constitutive openness (heteronomy-as-skin) that any "protection" must preserve rather than seal.
Evidence
- nancy-2021-fragile-skin-of-the-world VII §5 (raw 1131) — the title figure: the world's fragility as the absence of its own skin.
- nancy-2021-fragile-skin-of-the-world VII §6 (raw 1141, 1166–1172) — the closing refrain: the world as the factorial of all our skins; the asphyxiation-by-self-sufficiency thesis.
- fragile-skin-of-the-world concept page (created at the 2026-05-27 Nancy ingest) — the wiki's primary articulation of the figure.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The figure is poetic. A sceptic could ask whether the factorial is conceptually adequate — it is a mathematical operator Nancy deploys metaphorically; whether it does more than gesture is open.
- Single-source. Nancy 2021 is the wiki's only anchor. The reading would be strengthened by ingesting the cognate skin-tropes of Adoration / Sexistence / Corpus (none yet in
raw/). - The "absence of own skin" risks equivocation between a phenomenological claim (the world is given only relationally) and a cosmological one (the world is the relations). The Nancy note flags exactly this transcendental-to-cosmological slide as the book's weakest move.
Payoff
- Connects Nancy's Being Singular Plural (singularity-as-plural) and the late Adoration / Sexistence skin-tropes to a single architectonic, rather than leaving them as scattered figures.
- Distinguishes Nancy's "world" from both Heideggerian "world" (Dasein-relative horizon) and recent neo-Latourian "earth" (Gaia-as-living-organism): Nancy's world is neither a horizon nor an organism but a factorial-of-skins with no skin of its own.
- Gives the allonomy diagnosis its cosmological correlate (the world's skinlessness is the world-level form of the auto- that is always already allo-).
Status History
- 2026-06-01 — created at candidate (audit Phase 8, 17th run; harvested from the Nancy 2021 extraction-note Pass 3 Part D, which itself flagged "none unmistakable enough to write directly to
claims.md; all deferred to audit Phase 8"). 3-test status: (T1) contestable — yes; (T2) anchored in Nancy 2021 VII §5–§6; (T3) counterpressure recorded (poetic figure; single-source; transcendental-cosmological slide). Held at candidate: single-source and figural; promotion to live deferred until a second Nancy primary source (Adoration / Sexistence / Corpus) corroborates the skin-architectonic.
