Claim
GM II.12 states the genealogical method's core law: "the cause of the emergence of a thing and its ultimate utility… lie apart toto coelo"; the history of any practice is "a continuous sign-chain of ever new interpretations" produced by successive will-to-power overpowerings, each "a becoming-master… a new interpreting." Two consequences: (a) genealogy is grounded in the will to power — the method is not neutral historiography but the tracing of overpowerings; and (b) genealogy stands opposite in valence to Husserlian Rückfrage / Stiftung. Both are return-to-origin operations that refuse to read a practice off its present form; but where Stiftung returns to a founding in order to legitimate and reactivate a sedimented sense, genealogy returns to a descent (Herkunft) in order to debunk — to show origin and current purpose are toto coelo apart. Genealogy and Stiftung are thus cross-tradition cousins sharing the return-to-origin structure while inverting its valence.
Evidence
- nietzsche-1887-genealogy-of-morality — Preface §7 (extraction-note Pass 2c, raw 2455): "It is plain as day which color has to be a hundred times more important… for a genealogist of morals, namely gray, that is to say, whatever can be documented" — the method's anti-speculative, descent-tracing discipline.
- nietzsche-1887-genealogy-of-morality — II.12 (extraction-note Pass 2c, raw 2808): "the cause of the emergence of a thing and its ultimate utility… lie apart toto coelo… all purposes, all utilities are only signs that a will to power has become master over something less powerful" — origin ≠ purpose, and genealogy grounded in will to power.
Counterpressure / Limits
The cross-tradition leg — the valence-opposition to Husserlian Stiftung — is, on the GM side, anchored; on the Husserl side it is asserted, not yet anchored (the Origin of Geometry / Stiftung-valence material was itself a deferred audit candidate). Until that anchor is laid (weave Pass 3 / a Phase-3 motifs-delta), the structural-parallel half stays below live. Two further limits: whether II.12's "origin ≠ purpose" is a genuine method-law or a local polemical move against Rée's English psychology; and that genealogy-grounded-in-will-to-power inherits the same reflexivity as claims#bge-will-to-power-hedged-vs-flat (the method that reads everything as a will-to-power interpretation is itself such an interpretation).
Payoff
Names genealogy and stiftung as cross-tradition cousins — same return-to-origin structure, inverted valence (debunk vs legitimate) — a BRIDGE-weight parallel the corpus's Husserl–Nietzsche thread needs and that neither page currently states. Distinguishes genealogy from Stiftung at the level of what the return is for, preventing the wiki from collapsing two superficially similar "back to the origin" methods.

candidate(audit Phase 8, GM 1887 ingest). 3-test partly met (contestable; GM anchors traceable; counterpressure recorded) butliveblocked: the cross-tradition valence-opposition is single-source on the GM side, with the Husserl-side Stiftung anchor deferred to weave Pass 3 / Phase 3. Agenealogy ↔ Stiftungtyped connection (has cross-tradition cousin) is the natural weave Pass-3 product.
