Vortex / Tourbillon

The vortex / tourbillon names a recurring spatializing-temporalizing rotational figure in late MP — the figure that distributes times and spaces without coinciding with any of them. MP uses tourbillon repeatedly in the V&I working notes and the late lectures, and per Dufourcq's reading (M-C 2026 Ch 8) the vortex is "the complexification of the circle": where the circle stays self-identical, the vortex moves and produces what it moves through. Promoted from THEME to STRUCTURAL motif on 2026-05-05 via Dufourcq + Alloa-2019 cross-attestations (per motifs#vortex-tourbillon-spatializing-temporalizing-rotation). The figure provides the principal image for MP's imaginary read as ratio essendi — the "ontogenetic vortex that distributes times and spaces" is the figure of Being on Dufourcq's reading.

  • Vortex as complexification of the circle. Dufourcq Ch 8 (M-C 2026, p. 189): the circle stays self-identical; the vortex moves and produces what it moves through. The vortex is the figure of late-MP being's transitive / distributive operation — what is generated is the moving distribution.

  • Whether vortex = chiasm + temporal structure. The vortex's spatializing-temporalizing rotation is structurally close to a temporally-extended chiasm. Whether vortex is a figure of chiasm, a generalization of chiasm, or a distinct late-MP figure has not been articulated.
  • Bachelard genealogy not in raw/. Bachelard's L'Eau et les Rêves (1942) is the philosophical source for water-vortex figures Dufourcq invokes. Without ingest, the cross-tradition reading remains gestured-at.
  • Alloa 2019 not yet ingested. The Alloa article is one of the cross-attestations supporting the STRUCTURAL promotion but has not been ingested into the wiki proper.
  • Dufourcq's Imaginary of Animals (2021) not in raw/. Dufourcq's prior elaboration of the vortex-as-figure-of-being reading is not yet available for cross-checking.
