Partage (Nancy)

Nancy's untranslatable French term partage — simultaneously sharing out, apportioning, parting, partitioning, partaking — names the structure of "participation as much as irreducible partition" (Nancy, glossed by Derrida in *On Touching—Jean-Luc Nancy* p. 205). Developed across Le partage des voix (1982), Corpus (1992), Être singulier pluriel (1996). Partage is Nancy's explicit alternative to MP's "confusion of self and other" (V&I, Signs) — instead of fusion/confusion, partage names a relation that is both participation (sharing in) and partition (sharing out). Derrida marks the distance from MP at §9 p. 205: "As always with Nancy, partage — apportioning, sharing out, parting, partaking — signifies participation as much as irreducible partition, which is to say the 'spacing of sense.' Syncope is this parting and sharing out of spacing: the syncope separates and interrupts at the heart of contact. It breathes or marks the breathing, and gives it a threatened chance, its threatening possibility, to the same beat — the other's beat, the other's heartbeat. It is a sharing out without fusion, a community without community, a language without communication, a being-with without confusion."

What the Concept Does

The concept performs three argumentative tasks:

  1. Provides the post-haptocentric alternative to MP's "confusion of self and other." MP, Signs p. 174: "the 'solipsist layer' is both transitivity and confusion of self and other." Derrida reads this as the moment MP's chiasm-of-flesh collapses into intuitionistic immediacy. Nancy's partage refuses confusion: there is sharing (participation) but also partition (separation); the two are co-originary, not synthesized.

  2. Names the structure of being-singular-plural. In Être singulier pluriel (1996), partage is the basic ontological operation: each singular partakes (shares in) the plural, while parting (being apart from) the others. The with (cum-, mit-) is parted and shared simultaneously. Singular-plural is not a juxtaposition but a partage.

  3. Connects to syncope, exscription, and the rest of Nancy's signature concepts. Partage is structurally the same operation as syncope-nancy (interruption-at-the-heart-of-contact), exscription (writing-out / escape from inscription), and se-toucher-toi (self-touching-as-touching-you). All four name the spacing / interval / between that is at once condition of relation and refusal of fusion.

What It Rejects

  • MP's "confusion of self and other" as originary structure of intercorporeity. Derrida via Nancy: partage without confusion.
  • MP's "absolute presence of origins" (Signs p. 175): "The compresence of my 'consciousness' and my 'body' is prolonged into the compresence of my self and the other person." Nancy resists the compresence moment.
  • The Hegelian Aufhebung / sublation as fusion-via-negation: the partage is not sublated; the partition remains as constitutive partition. "A sharing out without fusion, a community without community."
  • Fraternity / brotherhood as model of community: Derrida's §2 long parenthesis on L'expérience de la liberté (Nancy 1988): the worry about "fraternity" as inheriting birth, filiation, virility. The partage is not fraternal because it does not presuppose shared origin.
  • The transcendental subject as ground of intersubjectivity: Husserl's transcendental ego founding the eidos of intersubjectivity. Partage does not require a prior transcendental ground; the sharing-out is co-originary.

Stakes

  • For the wiki's reading of chiasm and reversibility: MP's chiasm is the partial recognition of partage — MP's écart names what Nancy's partage explicitly thematizes. The comparison is productive but the difference is consequential: MP's reversibility tends toward coincidence-with-non-coincidence; Nancy's partage refuses any moment of coincidence.
  • For the wiki's reading of ecart: MP's écart is the closest MP-side approximation to partage; the comparison yields productive tension. Écart names the between; partage names the between-as-participation-and-partition.
  • For the philosophy of community / political-form: Nancy's partage (along with singular-plural) is the operator of his political philosophy. The "inoperative community" (la communauté désœuvrée, 1986) is community-as-partage. Politics in this register is not fraternal solidarity but parted-shared coexistence.
  • For the wiki's reading of seinsverlassenheit-abandonment-of-being (Nancy's reading of Heidegger): the abandonment of being is structurally partage of being — being apportioned-to and parted-from the abandoned.
  • For the deconstruction of Christianity: the communion of the Eucharist (literal communion = sharing-in) is read as partage-without-communion-as-fusion. The Christian sacramental sharing is structurally exceeded by the partage.
  • Confidence: high. Nancy's term is canonical; Derrida's reading at §9 anchors the wiki's adoption; the connection to MP's "confusion" is textually explicit.

Open Questions

  • What is the precise relation between partage and différance? Both name the between; partage has explicit ontological (singular-plural) and communitarian (inoperative community) registers; différance has explicit grammatico-temporal register. The two operators are clearly close but registrally distinct.
  • Does partage fully escape the Hegelian dialectic, or does it presuppose a non-sublated negation? Derrida notes that the partage is "sharing out without fusion" — the without suggests a negation. Whether the negation is dialectically sublated or genuinely partage'd is the question.
  • What is the political-form of partage? Nancy's "inoperative community" gestures at partage as political; whether partage can be institutionalized without ceasing to be partage (i.e., without congealing into fraternity, identity, sovereignty) is the question Nancy's late political philosophy engages.
  • How does partage relate to MP's écart via claims#morin-ecart-as-encroachment-vs-unpassable-limit? Morin diagnoses Nancy's écart as unpassable limit vs. MP's écart as encroachment. Partage is the positive register of Nancy's écart; the comparison with the wiki's existing Morin-claim deserves articulation.
