Allgemein / Besonderes / Einzelnes (Universal / Particular / Individual, Hegel)
Allgemeinheit, Besonderheit, and Einzelheit — universality, particularity, individuality — are the three moments of the Concept in Hegel's Doctrine of the Concept (GW 12 pp. 32–52). Each moment is the whole Concept under one inflection — not three sortable items, not three coordinate determinations of "extension," not three classificatory species.
The structuring rhythm of GW 12: every triad — judgment moments, syllogism moments, life moments (Sensibility / Irritability / Reproduction at p. 192), the Idea's three shapes (Life / Cognition / absolute Idea) — is a re-cast of the Allgemein / Besonderes / Einzelnes structure. The motif is the volume.
Crucially, Hegel rejects the quantitative reading: the universal is not "wider in extension" than the particular, the particular not wider than the individual. That reading destroys what the Concept is. The universal is "freye Macht" / "freye Liebe" / "schrankenlose Seeligkeit" (p. 42) that pervades its differences without being limited by them; the particular is the determinate universal; the individual is the universal returned-into-self as absolute negativity.
Key Points
- Three moments, each the whole Concept under one inflection. Not three coordinate items but three sides of one self-mediating structure.
The universal as free love and boundless blessedness — Hegel's most lyrical formulations of the speculative universal.
- Übergreifen (overgrasping). The universal's mode of being is Übergreifen — overgrasping its other while being itself in the other. The verb is signature for the Hegelian universal.
- The Particular is the determinate Universal. Not a "narrower species" but the universal as determinate.
- The Individual is the universal returned-into-self as absolute negativity. Not the bare singular but the universal that has completed its mediation by becoming individual.
- Anti-quantitative reading. The standard logical doctrine of "extension" (universal > particular > individual) "radically misunderstands the Concept" (per p. 51 Anmerkung) — quantity is "eine unpassende Form" for the Concept.
- Against Euler / Lambert diagrams. GW 12 pp. 54–55: Hegel attacks the calculus-of-logic tradition (Euler-Lambert) for trying to formalize concept-relations through diagrams. The Concept's determinations are "lebendige Bewegungen," not "todtliegendes wie Zahlen und Linien" — what would be "vollkommener Widerspruch" in quantitative terms is "der Natur des Begriffes wesentlich."
- The structuring rhythm of GW 12. Every triad in the Subjective Logic is a recast of U/P/I — the judgment-types, the syllogism-figures, the moments of life, the shapes of the Idea, the moments of absolute method.
What the Concept Does
- It supplies the inner structure of the Concept. U/P/I is the Concept's self-mediation.
- It supplies the structuring rhythm of the entire Subjective Logic. Every triad is U/P/I.
- It rejects the quantitative reading of universality. Universal is not wider-in-extension but free power overreaching its other.
- It refutes the calculus-of-logic tradition. Euler-Lambert diagrams fail because the Concept's determinations are lebendige Bewegungen, not Zahlen und Linien.
- It provides the cardinal Hegelian universal-doctrine — "freye Macht / freye Liebe / schrankenlose Seeligkeit" — that distinguishes Hegel from Kant (regulative universal), Aristotle (species-form), and the empiricist tradition (abstracted general).
What It Rejects
- The quantitative reading of universality (universal > particular > individual by extension).
- The Euler-Lambert calculus of logic with its geometric diagrams.
- The Kantian regulative universal — universality is not a regulative idea but the free power of the Concept.
- The Aristotelian species-form as the model of universality — Aristotle's universal is descriptive-taxonomic; Hegel's is dialectical-self-mediating.
- The empiricist abstracted general — concept as "common feature" abstracted from intuitions. See begriff-hegel for the full polemic.
Connections
- is the inner structure of der Begriff
- structures every triad in GW 12 — judgment-types, syllogism-figures, life-moments (Sensibility/Irritability/Reproduction, p. 192), Idea-shapes (Life/Cognition/absolute Idea)
- operates in Urtheil — judgment as the Concept's diremption of itself into U / P moments
- operates in Schluß — syllogism as the Concept's full self-mediation through U / P / I as terms
- operates in die Idee — Life, Cognition, absolute Idea as U / P / I of the adequate Concept
- is what the Aristotelian syllogistic describes but does not generate — Hegel's U/P/I is genetic, Aristotle's is taxonomic
- contrasts with the Kantian regulative universal — the speculative universal is free power, not regulative idea
- is operative in the political-mechanism analogy (GW 12 p. 152) — government / citizens / needs as three syllogistic terms each the middle of the other two
Motif Weight & Corpus Recurrence
This concept is tracked at corpus level in motifs under §"Allgemein / Besonderes / Einzelnes (Universal / Particular / Individual)" as a HUB motif, attested across 4 Hegel sources plus Aristotelian cross-tradition (see motifs.md for the current attestation list, source-level weights, and the AABE-rhythm structuring the judgment-types / syllogism-types / objectivity / Idea triads). Update both this section and the motifs.md entry when corpus weight shifts.
Open Questions
- Does the U/P/I structure accommodate non-monadic Concepts (relational, plural, contemporary metaphysics)? The triad is articulated in monadic register; whether it generalizes is contested.
- Is the Übergreifen-verb defensible against the contemporary metaphysics of universals (Lewis, Armstrong, Heil)? Contemporary universal-talk often eschews the "free power" register; the comparison is not yet on the wiki.
- What is the relation between Hegelian U/P/I and Aristotelian universal-particular-individual? Aristotle's katholou / kath' hekaston is structurally close but operates in the substance-metaphysical register Hegel supersedes. The relation is contested in contemporary Aristotle-Hegel scholarship.
