Claim

The dominant retrospective frame for thinking the 1950s passage "from phenomenology to structuralism" treats them as competing or successive paradigms — Ricœur's 1969 essay "La question du sujet: le défi de la sémiologie" (in Le conflit des interprétations) is canonical: structuralism is closure-of-signs that challenges phenomenology's open intentionality. Andén's 2020 foreword to PbP, anchored in the cours's own argument, makes the contrary claim: MP's Saussure-reading at PbP is not a phenomenology-overthrow but a convergence-discovery between Husserl's later Logical Investigations / Cartesian Meditations phenomenology of language and Saussure's retour au sujet parlant. Andén §3 (p. 18): "La lecture qu'il propose de [Saussure] est donc moins l'occasion d'une critique de la phénoménologie qu'une manière pour lui de souligner une convergence entre les pensées husserlienne et saussurienne." This convergence-frame is what made MP read the retour au sujet parlant in Saussure (CLG p. 25, 43, 112) as Saussure's most philosophical commitment, not as inconsistency in the CLG. Foucault's 1983 retrospective (Dits et écrits IV, p. 434) confirms that MP's PbP-era Saussure-encounter was one of the first major philosophical receptions of Saussure in France — and that this reception happened in the convergence-with-phenomenology register, not the paradigm-replacement register that emerged through Ricœur, Lévi-Strauss, and Greimas in the 1960s.

  • merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole — direct anchor. PbP [22v(28)] explicitly: "Husserl se rapproche ici de certains aspects de la linguistique contemporaine, et en particulier de Saussure. Ce que Husserl appelle phénoménologie du langage, retour au sujet parlant, n'est pas seulement exigence de la pensée philosophique mais de la linguistique elle-même, telle que Saussure la conçoit" (cf. Signes p. 105 sq.). PbP 43: "Le signe ≠ son auquel s'ajoute un sens, mais son faisant sens comme figure sur fond" — Saussure read through Gestalt psychology, which is Husserl-compatible.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The convergence-thesis flattens real differences between Husserl and Saussure. Husserl's transcendental intersubjectivity (the fifth Cartesian Meditation) is structurally distinct from Saussure's diacritical-value model; reading them as converging requires interpretive work that the claim's defenders (MP, Andén) may not fully discharge.
  • The Foucault 1983 retrospective is itself reconstruction. Foucault was reconstructing the early-50s scene from 30+ years later, with his own philosophical interests at stake. Using Foucault as a source of facts-about-MP's-reception-of-Saussure is methodologically risky.
  • Ricœur's reading has 50+ years of momentum. The Ricœurian "defi of semiology" frame is the default in French philosophical historiography. The claim opposes a settled scholarly consensus; this may require the claim to remain candidate until further secondary scholarship corroborates Andén.
  • MP's own treatment of Husserl evolves. What MP reads in Husserl in 1951 (PhL) is different from what he reads in 1960 (Origin of Geometry commentary). The convergence-with-Husserl-late may apply more to late Husserl than to Husserl-on-language as such; the claim's scope needs qualification.

Ricoeur 1969 p. 247, as block-quoted by Anden herself (raw/Le Probleme de la parole Cours au College de France, Notes, 1953-1954 (Maurice Merleau-Ponty).md, p. {20}, lines 335 and 343), targets "la linguistique structurale," for which "la langue se suffit a elle-meme: toutes ses differences lui sont immanentes; et c'est un systeme qui precede le sujet parlant." Anden then asks how MP could find a Husserl-Saussure convergence at all ("comment Merleau-Ponty peut-il trouver une convergence entre les pensees husserlienne et saussurienne?", p. {21}, line 347) and answers that MP's notion of structure, routed through Gestalttheorie, is "tout autre que celle que lui accordera le structuralisme" (pp. {21}-{22}, line 355; cf. line 367, the figure-sur-fond reading of PbP 43). The rival: MP did not discover a convergence between Husserl and the Saussure who founds structuralism; he constructed a Gestalt-inflected, parole-prioritizing "phenomenologist's Saussure," so the convergence is an artifact of an assimilationist reading — and MP's convergence-register and Ricoeur's defi-frame therefore never collide, since Ricoeur's historiography concerns structuralism proper (closure of signs), which MP's Saussure is on Anden's own showing "tout autre" than. This rival explains every cited anchor at least as well as the claim does (PbP [22v(28)] convergence language; Anden foreword section 3, p. 18; Signes p. 105 sq. — all consistent with MP writing in a convergence register because his Saussure was already assimilated to Husserl), and it dissolves the claim's corrective payoff against "the prevailing Ricoeurian historiography" without denying any evidence. Counterpressure bullet 1 (Husserl-Saussure doctrinal distance) and bullet 3 (Ricoeur's scholarly momentum) do not address it — the rival concerns MP's-Saussure vs. structuralism's-Saussure, not Husserl-vs-Saussure and not sociology of reception. Compounding unresolved doubt (default-deny): whether Ricoeur's Le conflit des interprétations already anticipates and rebuts MP's Saussure-reading directly (converting "the position-resisted" into "the rebuttal-already-on-record") cannot be checked against the corpus — no Ricoeur work exists in raw/ or wiki/sources/ (verified; the sole corpus anchor for Ricoeur 1969 is the single p. 247 paragraph Anden block-quotes), and the entry's own Status History (2026-05-16 creation line) set the explicit promotion condition "do not promote to live without Foucault or Ricœur scholarship review," which has not occurred (Updated still 2026-05-16; no later Status History event). Promotion candidate->live is blocked until the Gestalt-Saussure/assimilation rival is either written into Counterpressure with a defeater or adjudicated via a Ricoeur scholarship review.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim re-positions the entire MP-Saussure section of the wiki. The current wiki tends to treat Saussure as "the linguistic theorist who showed MP that meaning is diacritical." The convergence-thesis would shift this to: "the linguistic theorist whose retour au sujet parlant MP read as the linguistic-empirical analog of Husserl's phenomenology of language" — giving Saussure a more philosophical (less instrumental) role in MP's apparatus. It also opens a wiki-claim about Foucault's PbP-era retrospective as a third-party witness to MP's role in the philosophical reception of Saussure. For Paper A (if applicable), the convergence-thesis becomes a candidate corrective to the prevailing Ricœurian historiography.
