Claim

Kee 2025 §3 closing and §4 argue that The Problem of Speech (PbP, 1953–54) is the inflection point in MP's trajectory: the source where MP abandons monograph treatments of language as such (the abandoned *Prose of the World* and the abandoned Origin of Truth projects) and turns to a late ontology in which language is reabsorbed into the larger problem of vertical / wild being — "the voice of no one… voice of the things, the waves, and the forests" (V&I 1968 p. 155, the completed draft's closing lines; MP's paraphrase of the Valéry La Pythie verse he quotes at PbP pp. 84/86, per the PbP editors' footnote — locator corrected 2026-07-21, formerly miscited as PbP 209). The "specificity of language" question collapses (no silver bullet); the "quasi-natural significations" theme opens; the *Nature* III lectures (1959–60) pursue it; V&I 178f. integrates language with the indirect method. The genealogical claim is therefore: PbP is the textual hinge between MP's pre-1953 language-monograph projects and the post-1953 late-ontology architecture that absorbs language into wild being.

  • kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology — §3 closing and §4 (esp. pp. 89–92). Extraction-note Pass 2a entries anchor the pivot-thesis. Kee fn 22 specifically traces the abandonment: PoW in 1950–52 had been planned as a monograph on language; MP abandons it (publishes only Indirect Language and the Voices of Silence 1952 from it); the Origin of Truth project was also abandoned. PbP 1953–54 is the lecture-course point at which the language-as-such question collapses and the language-within-vertical-being question opens.
  • merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible — V&I 1968 p. 155 (closing paragraph of the completed draft, Ch. 4 "The Intertwining — The Chiasm"; cited by Kee at the close of §2, p. 86) and pp. 178f. (working note, "the incompleteness of the reduction… is the reduction itself"; cited Kee p. 89, re-referenced §4).   • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — PoW 1950–52, abandoned. The pivot's "before" — what MP was trying to do with language as a monograph subject before PbP collapsed the question.
  • kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology — PbP p. 199 (the "order of quasi-natural significations" closing gesture — now raw-verified first-hand: "S'il y a un ordre des significations quasi-naturelles…", raw block {196}); PbP p. 209 carries what Kee actually cites there — the "opening […] beneath language" / metalinguistic element (raw line 4313) — NOT the voice-of-no-one formula (that is V&I 1968 p. 155; corrected 2026-07-21, see Status History).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The "abandonment" framing is one reading. An alternative reading would treat PoW and Origin of Truth as postponed rather than abandoned — projects MP intended to return to but didn't have time for. Kaushik 2019 (Matrixed Ontology; year corrected 2026-07-21 — formerly miscited as "Kaushik 2021") reads MP's Valéry-language strand as continuous from PoW into V&I, suggesting the language-monograph register doesn't really collapse. If Kaushik's reading is right, "pivot" overstates the discontinuity.
  • PbP-as-pivot vs V&I-as-pivot. A rival genealogical reading places the pivot at V&I (1960–61), not PbP (1953–54). On the V&I-as-pivot reading, what happens at PbP is preparatory; the real turn happens with the V&I working notes' explicit indirect-ontology architecture. The PbP-as-pivot claim depends on weighting the language-as-such/language-within-wild-being shift more heavily than the late-ontology architectural shift.
  • The "voice of no one" passage from PbP 209 is single-mediated through Kee. A targeted PbP raw-source check would tighten the chain (PbP is raw/maurice-merleauponty-the-prose-of-the-world.md? — actually no, PbP = The Problem of Speech, a separate course not currently in raw/ as a standalone source page; the wiki cites it via Kee 2025 alone). This is a specific not-in-raw/ constraint: the Problem of Speech lecture course is not directly indexed. (1) The claim's central quotation is misattributed, and the primary source now in raw/ falsifies it. Counterpressure bullet 3 states that PbP "is not currently in raw/ as a standalone source page" and that "the Problem of Speech lecture course is not directly indexed." That is false as of this run: the MétisPresses 2020 edition Kee cites is at raw/Le Probleme de la parole Cours au College de France, Notes, 1953-1954 (Maurice Merleau-Ponty).md, with an ingested source page (wiki/sources/merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole.md, created 2026-05-16, confidence: high) and an extraction note. The Rule-18 targeted check that the 2026-05-09 reviewer set as the deferred discharge condition for supported (Status History, 2026-05-09 line) has been available since 2026-05-16 and was never performed. Performed now, it refutes the anchor. The page offset is fixed by three independent Kee anchors (datalab marker + 3 = printed page): marker {38} → PbP 41 blanc/colorés (raw line 703); marker {196} → PbP 199 "un ordre des significations quasi-naturelles" (raw line 4157); marker {206} → PbP 209 "Déterminer ce qui est en deçà du langage: cette ouverture…" (raw line 4313), which is exactly Kee's "opening […] beneath language (209)". Printed PbP 209 (raw lines 4307–4325) contains no "voix de personne" and no "voix des choses, des ondes et des bois." The Valéry lines "N'être plus la voix de personne / Tant que des ondes et des bois" occur at PbP ≈ 84 (raw lines 1673–75; La Pythie, editors' fn 2 at raw line 1685), and the editors' note at raw line 1687 states explicitly that MP paraphrases them in Le visible et l'invisible p. 201 (= V&I Eng. 155): «Et en un sens, comme le dit Valéry, le langage est tout, puisqu'il n'est la voix de personne, qu'il est la voix même des choses, des ondes et des bois.» The formulation the claim quotes is therefore V&I's, not PbP's; its PbP ancestor is a Valéry citation ~125 pages earlier, doing local work for the middle-period point that "Le signe prend sens et par là se détache de la personne et apparaît comme la voix même de ce dont on parle, comme vérité" (raw line 1677) — expression-and-truth, not language reabsorbed into wild/vertical being. (2) Kee's own text agrees with the raw and against the claim. At raw/Kee, H. From encountering foreign languages to the language of phenomenology….md line 99 Kee writes: "By contrast, in a late, well-considered remark on language, from the closing lines of the completed draft of The Visible and the Invisible, … it is 'the voice of no one, since it is the very voice of the things, the waves, and the forests' (1968, 155)." The contrastive "By contrast" sets the quotation against the sentence it annotates — "The Problem of Speech is Merleau-Ponty's last course or published work that attempts to treat language to some extent on its own" (raw line 97). In its local context the passage is Kee's evidence for what MP says after and outside PbP — i.e. precisely the datum the V&I-as-pivot rival (Counterpressure bullet 2) requires. The wiki's own anchoring artifacts record it correctly: extraction note lines 32 and 127 ("V&I 1968 p. 155, qtd. Kee p. 86") and source page line 144. Evidence bullet 5 therefore contradicts the artifacts it claims to rest on when it calls "voice of no one… voice of the things, the waves, and the forests" at "PbP p. 209" one of "the interior signs of the pivot within PbP itself"; the Claim paragraph repeats the misattribution. The defect was already named on 2026-05-09 (Status History; wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-09-twelfth-run.md line 42), was never repaired (Updated: still 2026-04-28), and has propagated unmarked to wiki/concepts/wild-being.md line 262. (3) Three further Evidence-bullet anchor defects. (a) Bullet 2 places V&I 155 and 178f. at "Kee §4 p. 91"; V&I 155 sits in §2 (raw line 99; §3 opens raw line 100; extraction line 127 = "qtd. Kee p. 86") and V&I 178f. sits in §3 (raw line 120; extraction line 131 = "qtd. Kee p. 89"). Kee p. 91 is where PbP 107/118 are quoted (extraction line 137). (b) Bullet 3 places Nature 2003 pp. 226f. "via Kee §4"; the string "226" occurs exactly once in the raw article, at line 96, inside §2 — cf. wiki/concepts/quasi-natural-signification.md line 75 ("§2 (Kee p. 86) … Kee fn 21 records the Nature III development"). Kee's §4 Nature citation is 2003, 273 (raw line 110). (c) Bullet 4 ([[merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world]] — "PoW 1950–52, abandoned. The pivot's 'before'") supplies no page, section, extraction-note line, or source-page passage: no anchor at all. (4) Bullet 1 cites a doubly-hedged conjecture as a finding. It asserts "Kee fn 22 specifically traces the abandonment." Kee's footnote reads: "Perhaps this is also the reason for his abandoning two major monograph projects in the years surrounding The Problem of Speech. Both The Prose of the World and The Origin of Truth were perhaps too closely wed to the idea of a distinctive characteristic of language" (raw line 128, Notes block). The Kee extraction note itself files this under "Question this text answers that it never explicitly states" and calls it answered "obliquely" (line 249). Kee's unhedged sentence is the weaker terminus claim — PbP is the last work treating language on its own (raw line 97) — not the hinge claim the entry needs; and "in the years surrounding" does not place the abandonments at PbP (PoW was abandoned in 1952, before the 1953–54 course). Net: Test 2 fails at supported grade. The quotation carrying the claim's "interior sign of the pivot within PbP itself" is not in PbP at all and, in its actual local context, sits on the rival's side of the ledger; two Kee locations are wrong; one bullet is unanchored; one hedge is flattened; and the primary source PbP — ingested with source page and extraction note since 2026-05-16 — is absent from Sources: while Counterpressure still asserts it is unavailable.
  • C3 supported-jury refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-21, wf_81b4545d-850 / wf_68473faa-37c): Rival reading (undefeated at supported-grade): PbP's own conclusion nominates institution / Stiftung and the semantic order — not vertical/wild being — as its successor problem. The 2026-05-09 review attached two discharge conditions to any supported promotion of this entry: "a targeted PbP raw-source check (per Rule 18) on PbP 199 and 209" or "Kaushik 2021 continuity-vs-pivot adjudication" (wiki/claims.md Status History, 2026-05-09 line). Both were deferred on a ground that is now stale: Counterpressure bullet 3 asserts PbP "is not currently in raw/ as a standalone source page; the wiki cites it via Kee 2025 alone." PbP was ingested on 2026-05-16 as [[merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole]] (wiki/log.md line 2375ff.), raw at raw/Le Probleme de la parole Cours au College de France, Notes, 1953-1954 (Maurice Merleau-Ponty).md. The entry was never updated afterward (Updated: 2026-04-28; no Status History line after 2026-05-09), and neither its Sources: field nor any Evidence bullet cites the primary PbP source page. Performing the deferred check now strengthens the rival rather than defeating it, on five anchors: (a) The forward vector PbP itself declares. The course conclusion closes: "reste à étudier comment la parole se fait institution (et comment l'institution est appel à la parole, sorte de «parole générale»)" (raw line 4203, PbP p. {199} — the very page the claim cites) and "En somme ce qu'il reste à étudier: comment la parole s'institutionnalise et comment l'institution lance la parole" (raw line 4225, p. {200}). The handoff sentence at folio 136, p. {197}: "le problème de l'institution et le problème du sémantique, i. e. la Stiftung par l'opération expressive" (raw line 4163). The MétisPresses editors' footnote to that sentence names the successors explicitly: "S'annoncent donc ici tout à la fois le cours de l'année suivante sur L'institution, le cours de 1960 sur L'origine de la géométrie de Husserl, mais également les méditations ultimes sur les essences logiques et alogiques" (raw line 4177) — institution, Origin of Geometry, the sensible idea; not the reabsorption of language into vertical being. The wiki's own primary PbP source page states the same rival vector: "The course closes by handing two problems to its successors: (a) institution / Stiftung (handed to the 1954-55 course); (b) the semantic-vs-diacritical distinction (handed to the 1960 Origin of Geometry commentary)" (wiki/sources/merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole.md line 100; cf. lines 83, 128–129, 206, 256). (b) The claim's only "interior sign of the pivot within PbP itself" fails the raw check. Evidence bullet 5 cites "PbP p. 209 ('voice of no one… voice of the things, the waves, and the forests')". PbP {209} (raw lines 4384–4402) contains no such passage: it holds the Parain myth-of-language note, "le structuralisme est la vérité de l'objectivisme," Carnap/Jakobson/Couturat, and the marginal programme "chercher dans le tissu linguistique lui-même ce qui le distingue, fait sa spécificité" (raw line 4398) — MP still pursuing the specificity question, the reverse of the claim's "The 'specificity of language' question collapses (no silver bullet)" (Claim paragraph). The Valéry verses actually occur at PbP {81} and {86} (raw lines 1673–1675, 1790–1792), inside the January-1954 Saussure/parole lessons, doing theory-of-speech work ("le signe prend sens… apparaît comme la voix même de ce dont on parle, comme vérité", raw line 1677). The full formulation the claim quotes appears in the PbP volume only inside an editorial footnote, which identifies it as MP's later paraphrase: "Il en fait une paraphrase dans Le visible et l'invisible, op. cit., p. 201: «…il n'est la voix de personne, qu'il est la voix même des choses, des ondes et des bois»" (raw line 1687) — i.e. V&I Fr. 201 = Eng. 155, exactly where the V&I-as-pivot rival puts it and where every other wiki surface already puts it (.extraction-kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology.md line 127; wiki/sources/kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology.md line 144; wiki/concepts/quasi-natural-signification.md line 49). The 2026-05-09 reviewer's Test-5 concern is therefore not merely restated but confirmed at the raw level, and the misattribution has already propagated to a concept page (wiki/concepts/wild-being.md line 262 quotes it as "PbP 209"). (c) "Quasi-natural significations" carries the opposite index in situ. The phrase is real (contra any absence claim) but sits at PbP {196}/{198}, not 199, and is glossed deflationarily by MP himself: "ou bien ne sont elles pas plus naturelles que les autres, seulement sédimentées? S'il y a un ordre des significations quasi-naturelles, (quasi, car elles ne sont pas communes à tous les hommes, à toutes les langues)" (raw line 4157), and at {198}: "Ces significations prosaïques ou quasi naturelles sont-elles d'anciennes significations poétiques ou obliques? … La langue, l'institution." (raw line 4183), followed by "Problèmes corrélatifs de l'institution (de la parole instituée) et de l'acquis (de sémantique)" (raw line 4187). Locally, "quasi-natural" = merely sedimented / prosaic / instituted, expressly not common to all languages — a middle-period sedimentation thesis indexed to institution. The Claim paragraph and Evidence bullet 3 read the same phrase forward to Nature III's "quasi-natural life of language" and "nature's tendency to generate differentiation and meaning from itself" — a nature-ontological sense. On the rival, the PbP → Nature III line is a term-match across two different senses, not a pivot. (d) The vertical/wild-being vocabulary is absent from the 1953–54 course. "vertical" occurs exactly once in the entire PbP volume — in an editors' footnote quoting an unpublished MP note dated July 1959 ("Le monde 'vertical', ce n'est pas seulement le monde sensible…", raw line 2499); "sauvage" occurs only as "enfants sauvages" in the child-acquisition material (raw lines 2018, 2032). The vocabulary in which the claim states the pivot's content ("language is reabsorbed into the larger problem of vertical / wild being", Title field) is thus demonstrably post-1959; the rival's charge that it is retrojected onto PbP is textually supported, not merely possible. (e) The rival the entry does name was never opened, and is mis-cited. Counterpressure bullet 1 attributes the continuity reading to "Kaushik 2021 (matrixed ontology)". Matrixed Ontology is Kaushik 2019 (wiki/sources/kaushik-2019-matrixed-ontology.md, frontmatter year: 2019); Kaushik 2021 is Negation and the Implex (wiki/sources/kaushik-2021-negation-implex.md). Both are ingested and available, so the alternative discharge condition was performable; it has not been performed, and the rival is filed under a handle that does not resolve to the book invoked. Under Test 5, the strongest counter-position is not the one the entry states (V&I-as-pivot) but this institution/Stiftung-as-successor reading, which is anchored in PbP's own conclusion, in its editors' apparatus, and in the wiki's own primary PbP source page — and which the entry's Counterpressure does not mention at all. medium confidence does not survive restatement against it while (i) the sole PbP-interior evidence anchor is misattributed, (ii) the primary-source ingest of 2026-05-16 has never been folded into the entry, and (iii) both 2026-05-09 discharge conditions remain open.   • C3 supported-jury refuter objection (scope lens, consolidation 2026-07-21, wf_81b4545d-850 / wf_68473faa-37c): Scope objection (consolidation 2026-07-21, C3 refuter panel, scope lens) — blocks live -> supported. The claim as worded is broader than, and in three places different in kind from, what its sources say. Four defects, each independently sufficient. (1) Hedged source read as flat. Every load-bearing formulation in Kee 2025 is hedged, and the entry strips every hedge. - Kee's abandonment remark (endnote, raw/Kee, H. From encountering foreign languages to the language of phenomenology….md line 128): "Perhaps this is also the reason for his abandoning two major monograph projects in the years surrounding The Problem of Speech. Both The Prose of the World and The Origin of Truth were perhaps too closely wed to the idea of a distinctive characteristic of language." Two "perhaps" and an explicitly diffuse dating. The entry (Evidence bullet 1) renders this flatly: "Kee fn 22 specifically traces the abandonment… PbP 1953–54 is the lecture-course point at which the language-as-such question collapses." - Kee line 97: "It is perhaps for this reason that The Problem of Speech is Merleau-Ponty's last course or published work that attempts to treat language to some extent on its own." - Kee's conclusion (line 124): MP's reasons for speaking of the common source in ontological terms "are not entirely obvious based on The Problem of Speech alone"; the sense-before-sense "is increasingly understood in Merleau-Ponty's later thought as vertical or wild being" — a gradualist formulation, not a pivot. - Kee fn 21 (line 96): PbP "ends with the suggestion of an 'order of quasi-natural significations'". The Claim paragraph converts this question into a positive event: "the 'quasi-natural significations' theme opens"; the Wiki home wiki/concepts/quasi-natural-signification.md L33 escalates further — PbP 199's "order of quasi-natural significations" is "literally the closing gesture of PbP… this gesture is the pivot's pivot." At supported this reads as doctrine; the text is a conditional inside a list of problems the course hands forward unsolved. (2) Equivocation on "monograph treatments of language as such" — the claim is false under both readings of its own key phrase. Kee's actual predicate is "last course or published work that attempts to treat language to some extent on its own." Read broadly (treatments of language on its own), PbP is such a treatment — the last one, on Kee's wording — so PbP is the terminus of the series, not the point at which the series is abandoned; the claim makes PbP simultaneously the abandonment and an instance of what is abandoned. Read narrowly ("monograph" = the two book projects), Kee dates the abandonments only to "the years surrounding" PbP, and the wiki's own dating puts Prose of the World at 1950–52 (claims#pbp-as-middle-term-parole-parlante-parlee-1953-54 PoW Evidence bullet; this entry's Evidence bullet 1: "PoW in 1950–52") — i.e. concluded before PbP opened on 3 December 1953 (wiki/sources/merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole.md L29). Under the narrow reading the abandonment antedates the alleged pivot. "The pivot at which MP abandons monograph treatments of language as such" (Title field) survives on neither reading; it survives only by sliding between them. (3) A Wiki home asserts a quotation the sources locate elsewhere and deploy against the claim. wiki/concepts/wild-being.md L262 states the claim with the quotation "voice of no one… voice of the things, the waves, and the forests," attributed to PbP 209 — as does Evidence bullet 5, calling it an "interior sign of the pivot within PbP itself." It is not PbP. Kee fn 22 (raw line 99) attributes it to Merleau-Ponty 1968, 155 (V&I), and introduces it with "By contrast" — i.e. Kee uses it to mark what V&I says against what PbP does. The wiki's own extraction note records this correctly (wiki/sources/.extraction-kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology.md L127: "V&I 1968 p. 155, qtd. Kee p. 86") and separately records that Kee's actual PbP-209 citation is the different phrase "opening […] beneath language" (L137). Grepping the Kee raw for every PbP <page> citation confirms PbP 209 occurs once, at line 124, for "opening […] beneath language." The primary text agrees: PbP printed pp. 208–210 are the Projets et plans de cours, f. [146]–[147] (raw lines 4384–4403), containing no such phrase; PbP's only "voix de personne" is a three-line Valéry quotation (La Pythie: "Qui se connaît quand elle sonne / N'être plus la voix de personne / Tant que des ondes et des bois") at ff. 44 and 49 (raw lines 1673, 1791), in the January 1954 Saussure lessons — and the PbP editors' own footnote (raw line 1687) states that the "voix même des choses, des ondes et des bois" wording is MP's paraphrase in Le visible et l'invisible (Fr. p. 201). So the phrase the entry offers as PbP's interior evidence of the pivot is (a) Valéry's, not MP's, (b) in its cited wording V&I's, not PbP's, and (c) located by Kee on the far side of the pivot the claim is trying to date. (4) The narrowing that licensed medium is stale, and the register's other PbP claims periodize PbP the opposite way. Counterpressure bullet 3 still states that PbP "is not currently in raw/ as a standalone source page… the wiki cites it via Kee 2025 alone." False since 2026-05-16: raw/Le Probleme de la parole Cours au College de France, Notes, 1953-1954 (Maurice Merleau-Ponty).md and wiki/sources/merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole.md (created 2026-05-16). The entry's Sources: field still omits the PbP source page, and the entry has not been touched since 2026-04-28 — so the targeted PbP raw-check that the 2026-05-09 reviewer set as the discharge condition (Status History, 2026-05-09) has been available for fourteen months of wiki-time and was flagged as owed (wiki/.audit/comprehensive-review-2026-05-23/salience-and-synthesis.md L204: "PbP 2026-05-16 ingest deepens this claim materially… CP should consolidate") and never performed.
