The algorithm is a special case of language (PW ch.4 as MP's anti-Platonist origin point)

ID: algorithm-as-special-case-of-language-1950 Title: The algorithm is a special case of language (PW ch.4 as MP's anti-Platonist origin point) Status: candidate Confidence: speculative Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-27 Updated: 2026-06-27 Sources: merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world Wiki homes: indirect-language, science-as-coherent-deformation

Claim

The Prose of the World ch.4's argument that "the algorithmic expression is therefore secondary; it is a special case of language" furnishes MP's earliest sustained attack on the formal-truth-as-paradigm picture: mathematical exactitude does not escape the creative "shift of restructuring" but merely conceals it, making exact science a derivative mode of expression rather than the standard against which language is to be measured.

Evidence

  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — extraction note arg. #7 + Pass-2c anchors: "The algorithmic expression is therefore secondary. It is a special case of language" (ch.4, p. 129); "Truth is not an adequation but anticipation, repetition, and slippage of meaning" (ch.4, p. 130).
  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — raw ll. 1469–1489 (the Σn = n/2(n+1) worked example: the properties "are not 'contained' in that series," the formula emerges only when "the structure poses a question to me," "here there reappears the shift of restructuring which is characteristic of language… Once we have managed to find the formula, we then forget the shift, and so we believe in the preexistence of the world").

Counterpressure / Limits

The source page's own Critique grants the argument "may underestimate the autonomy of formal systems" — compelling for the origin of mathematical concepts, weaker for their subsequent autonomous development; a formalist could concede the genetic point while denying it touches the validity or self-sufficiency of the algorithm once constituted. Distinct from the contested science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (Stiftung/secret-science, not the algorithm-as-derivative thesis) — do not conflate — and from phenomenal-invariants-replace-resemblance-and-denotation (pictorial perception, not mathematical truth).

Payoff

Locates a 1950–52 origin for the late-MP refusal to treat exact science as ontologically privileged (cf. "Eye and Mind"'s "science manipulates things"), supplying the missing first term in the wiki's genealogy of MP-on-mathematical-truth — currently no claim names PW as the anti-Platonist-about-formal-truth origin point.
