Claim

The painting↔language parallel that organizes Prose of the World ch.3 is constructed in order to break: its argumentative telos is the asymmetry "the first painting opens up a world, but the first word opens up a universe," where language's cumulative, self-recovering, self-criticizing power is precisely what painting lacks. The parallel is a contrast-device that isolates what is peculiar to language, not an equivalence — and this is why language, not painting, becomes the privileged clue to the late ontology of expression.
