Per Chouraqui, MP's *equivocal* (becoming) ontology — not a univocal one — is what grounds normativity without theodicy or fatalism

ID: mp-equivocal-ontology-grounds-normativity Title: Per Chouraqui, MP's equivocal (becoming) ontology — not a univocal one — is what grounds normativity without theodicy or fatalism Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-14 Updated: 2026-06-14 Sources: chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider Wiki homes: prospective-activity-of-consciousness, good-ambiguity, ambiguity-vs-ambivalence

Claim

Per Chouraqui 2025 §4, the standard normative double-bind — a norm must be both justified (grounded, not arbitrary) and selective (able to rank configurations of meaning) — "is only problematic for univocal ontologies, ontologies where things either are or are not, with no in-between." Because MP's ontology is one of becoming / equivocity rather than univocal being — reality includes possibilities, not only objects and facts — configurations of meaning can be assessed by how well they fulfill world-making (hermeneutic fertility vs. sterility), without the ontology committing to theodicy ("everything that is is justified") or to fatalism. The equivocity of being is therefore the structural condition that lets MP's ethics be selective without dogma: an open society and a book-burning totalitarianism are both meaningful, but differ in hermeneutic fertility, and that difference is rankable precisely because being is equivocal rather than either/or.

Evidence

  • chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider — §4 (Conclusions), arg #12: "It is adequate to the equivocity of being" as the meta-ethical move grounding selectiveness-without-dogma. Anchored in extraction-note Pass 2a arg #12 + Pass 3 Part C silent-key "equivocity" + Pass 3 Part D candidate #5.
  • chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider — key passage anchor: "When I want to go from this interrogation to an affirmation... I crystallize a collection of indefinite motives in an act of consciousness, I enter back into the implicit, that is, into the equivocal and the play of the world" ([1] p. 271, extraction-note Key Passages), and "death" / "death of consciousness" ([1] p. 74) as the life-death ontological substrate of normativity (extraction-note Key Passages, anchors args #11–12).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Localized to §4. The argument occupies one section of one paper; it is Chouraqui's reconstruction of MP's meta-ethics, not a thematized MP doctrine, and the extraction note rates it "important but localized."
  • Genetic-fallacy risk. Chouraqui's supplement (the prospective activity of consciousness argument) deriving normativity from the bare structure of consciousness is, per the note's own Pass-3 Part A diagnostic, "brief and risks the genetic fallacy" — deriving an ought about consciousness from the is of its structure.
  • Single-source articulator. No independent secondary uptake confirms that the univocal/equivocal distinction is the right diagnosis of how MP escapes theodicy; the reading depends on Chouraqui's level-of-abstraction choice.

Payoff

If accepted, the wiki gains the meta-ethical justification layer of MP's ethics as a distinct thesis from the negative diagnosis (claims#agnosia-as-mp-ethical-counter-ideal, live) and the positive structural form (claims#mp-hermeneutic-circle-recognition-institution-unity, candidate): it explains why MP is entitled to rank configurations of meaning at all, locating the entitlement in the equivocity of being rather than in any imported normative standard. It makes prospective-activity-of-consciousness and good-ambiguity load-bearing for MP's ethics (not just his epistemology of perception) and supplies the answer to the is–ought worry that the standard "MP has no ethics" reading presupposes is unanswerable.

Status History

  • 2026-06-14 — created at candidate (audit v1.8 D4, non-cohort harvest walk); single-source (Chouraqui §4 only), so the gate caps at candidate per the live test's ≥2-distinct-source requirement. Contestable (against univocal-ontology readings and the genetic-fallacy objection) and anchored in the extraction note; matches the note's own Pass-3 Part D #5 decision ("do not promote to claims.md yet"). Promotion to live requires a second source articulating the equivocal-ontology-grounds-normativity reading, or a targeted check that the §4 argument does not reduce to the genetic fallacy its Part A diagnostic flags.
