Claim

Lau (2016 p. 168) noted that MP never gave examples of lateral universality. Kee 2025 argues that language is the missing example — the case the canonical "From Mauss to Lévi-Strauss" 1959 essay (Signs 120) generalises from but never explicitly named. The case has a further feature: the volitional/affective grounding (*expressive will / poussée*, the infant's "general attraction to speech") reframes lateral universality from a primarily cognitive/structural feature shared by languages to a primarily affective–volitional drive of speakers who want to understand one another across languages. Per Kee fn 18, the explicit naming of "lateral universal" in the 1953 *Sensible World and the World of Expression* course (pp. 45, 50) precedes the 1959 Signs essay by six years; the claim therefore also has a genealogical sub-thesis: lateral universality is first named in the 1953 expression course, not in the 1959 ethnographic essay.

Evidence

  • kee-2025-foreign-languages-phenomenology — §2 esp. pp. 81–83. Kee argues directly that language is the missing case: "The lateral universality is, in the linguistic case, the contingent universality realised in the encounter between speakers across languages, animated by the poussée of speakers who want to understand one another." Extraction-note Pass 2a entries on the language-as-lateral-universal-case anchor; Lau 2016 p. 168 cited at Kee p. 81 ("Lau notes that Merleau-Ponty offers no concrete examples of lateral universality").
  • merleau-ponty-2020-sensible-world-expression — pp. 45, 50 (cited via Kee fn 18, p. 81); raw-verified 2026-04-29 at SW&WE raw lines 1587 ("But this universality [is] lateral, /[53]v(IV9)/ being that appears through [the] articulation of intersecting perspectives") and 1651 ("But it's lateral universality, intersecting perspectives, with being that shows through [transparaît] where they cross"). Two attestations of "lateral universality" in the 1953 course manuscript notes (locator [53]v(IV9)). The 1953 course is the first naming per Kee; the 1959 Signs essay is the first publication. The targeted raw check is now discharged: the 1953 first-naming sub-thesis is direct-source-anchored.
  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — PoW pp. 50f. (cited via Kee p. 81): the poussée of speaking subjects; the affective–volitional substrate of expressive intersubjectivity. The substrate-claim has its earliest extended articulation here.
  • merleau-ponty-1964-signsSigns p. 120 ("From Mauss to Lévi-Strauss," 1959, the essay where "lateral universal" appears in published form). Cited via Kee §2 pp. 81–82.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The 1953 first-naming sub-thesis is now raw-verified (2026-04-29 targeted check). Two attestations of "lateral universality" in the 1953 course at SW&WE raw lines 1587 + 1651 confirm Kee fn 18's claim. The sub-thesis is direct-source-anchored. The page-number correspondence (45, 50 in the 2020 Northwestern UP edition) cannot be verified directly without the printed pagination overlay on the manuscript-locator-keyed raw transcription, but the substantive content — that lateral universality is named in the 1953 course — stands.
  • The "missing example" framing depends on Lau's reading. Lau (2016) is not in raw/; Kee cites Lau as having noted the absence. If Lau's reading is wrong (i.e., MP did give examples and they have been overlooked), the missing-example framing weakens. The other framings — language is a case of lateral universality, with affective–volitional grounding — survive even if "missing example" doesn't.
  • Other candidates for the missing case: painting (per the Carbone-Fóti-Johnson reading), science (per Husserl's Crisis register), historical understanding (per Saint Aubert's Stiftung reading). The claim that language is the missing case is interpretively strong but depends on weighting Kee's reading against rivals.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim gives lateral-universal its richest articulation: language as a case where the lateral-universal structure operates with explicit affective–volitional grounding, rather than as a primarily cognitive-structural feature. It also re-grounds expressive-will and propaedeutic-dialectic in the broader architecture of MP's intersubjectivity. The genealogical sub-thesis (1953 first naming) is also a small but real correction to the secondary literature's tendency to date "lateral universal" to 1959.

Status History

  • 2026-04-28 — created as live following Kee 2025 ingest. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the missing-example framing is contestable (and is contested by alternative candidates for the missing case); (2) Kee §2 + the secondary references through Kee anchor each evidence bullet; (3) Counterpressure documents the Lau-mediated framing risk, the deferred 1953 raw check, and the alternative-candidate counterpressure.
  • 2026-04-29 — 1953 raw check discharged (SW&WE raw lines 1587 + 1651). The 1953 first-naming sub-thesis is now direct-source-anchored. Status remains live; the discharge tightens the evidence chain without escalating to supported because the broader missing-example framing still depends on Lau's reading and the alternative-candidate counterpressure still binds.
