Carl Stumpf
German philosopher-psychologist (1848–1936), student of franz-brentano, professor at Berlin; teacher of the Gestalt psychologists (Köhler, Koffka, Wertheimer) and a founding figure of experimental phenomenology of sound (Tonpsychologie). For this wiki he matters in two capacities: the Logical Investigations is dedicated to him (husserl-1900-logical-investigations-vol1), and he is the chief interlocutor of Investigation III (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2).
Key Points
- Source of the independent/non-independent distinction: Investigation III opens by identifying its cardinal difference between "abstract" and "concrete" contents with "Stumpf's distinction between dependent (non-independent) and independent contents" (Inv III Intro), drawn from his Über den psychologischen Ursprung der Raumvorstellung (1873) and Tonpsychologie.
- The quality/extension analysis: Husserl's exhibition-case of inseparability is quoted from Stumpf — "Quality shares after a fashion in changes of extension… a quality can decrease to nothing… mere change of quantity can bring it to nought"; quality and extension "in some manner compose a total content" whose "nature forbids them to have an isolated and mutually independent existence in our ideas" (Inv III §4).
- Converted, not adopted: Husserl's decisive move against his source — "Stumpf uses considerations of this sort to prove the mutual inseparability… we shall rather make use of them to define inseparability" (§5) — turns a psychological incapacity-claim into an objective essence-law: the de-psychologizing of the distinction is the anti-psychologistic turn executed inside mereology (see parts-and-wholes).
- Fusion: Stumpf's Verschmelzung (the continuous merging of sense-qualities) supplies the wider field for Inv III §9's separation-by-discontinuity analysis.
- Also cited in Investigation V for "attributive parts" — his name for the form of combination Husserl borrows for quality + matter (Inv V §25).
Connections
- was the teacher-figure honoured by the Logical Investigations' dedication — with franz-brentano, the second Brentano-school pillar behind Husserl's formation.
- is transformed by parts-and-wholes — his psychological proof becomes Husserl's objective definition (the prove→define pivot).
- anticipates the Gestalt lineage the wiki tracks at gestalt-principles-of-unification — via his Berlin students; Investigation III's engagement with Ehrenfels' form-qualities (§§4, 22) belongs to the same pre-Gestalt debate.
Open Questions
- Stumpf's own works are not in
raw/; his side of the dependence-analysis is held only through Husserl's quotations. An ingest of the Raumvorstellung material would let the prove→define pivot be checked against its source.
