Entäußerung (Relinquishment / Kenosis)

Entäußerung is Hegel's term for the self-relinquishing that IS the actuality of substance — not a defective state to be overcome, but the very form in which spirit gives itself any actuality at all. Pinkard's 2018 Cambridge translation renders the term as "relinquishing" (refusing the more popular "alienation," "externalization," and "objectification") because the word carries the load-bearing theological resonance Luther used for Christ's kenosis — Christ's "emptying himself" in Phil. 2:6–8 (Pinkard p. xlii, lines 422–424). The concept does decisive work at two main loci: (1) the Self-Alienated Spirit chapter (§§483–485), where Hegel posits a Spirit whose substance is its own self-relinquishing — the wider structural sense that Marx's later Entfremdung will narrow; and (2) the Beautiful-Soul-to-Forgiveness arc (§§657–671), where the beautiful soul's diagnostic failure is precisely its Kraft der Entäußerung-lack (§658) and the forgiveness "Yes" is the I returning from Entäußerung into unity (§671). The concept is the wiki's first dedicated treatment of Hegel's name for the structural mechanism of self-doubling-and-return at the level of the self (structural cousin to "labor of the negative" at the level of substance).

Key Points

  • Entäußerung is the actuality of substance, not a defect to overcome. §§483–485: Hegel posits a Spirit whose substance is its own self-relinquishing — not a defective state of an originally unified spirit, but "the very form in which post-ethical spirit gives itself actuality" (line 1886).
  • Pinkard preserves the Lutheran-kenotic resonance with "relinquishing"; other renderings (alienation, externalization, objectification) lose the link to Luther's use of Entäußerung for Christ's kenosis in Phil. 2:6–8 (Pinkard p. xlii, lines 422–424).
  • At the Beautiful Soul, the failure is precisely the refusal of Entäußerung (§658, fn. 172 Kraft der Entäußerung, line 4018): the beautiful soul "lacks the force to relinquish itself" and so "vanishes like a shapeless vapor dissolving into thin air" (line 4021).
  • The Forgiveness arc enacts Entäußerung as the returning "Yes" (§671, line 4094): "Through this Entäußerung, this knowing… returns back into the unity of the self." Judging consciousness must enact Entäußerung in forgiveness (§668, line 4067).
  • Marx's Entfremdung narrows Hegel's wider structural sense. Marx critically restricts alienation to specific conditions of wage-labor that can be abolished; Hegel holds the wider structural sense in which alienation is the mode in which spirit gives itself any actuality at all (line 1930).
  • Sublation (*Aufhebung*) is the categorial operator; Entäußerung is the substantive register. Aufheben names what dialectical movement does to a determination; Entäußerung names substance's self-doubling-and-return — the operation at the level of the self, structural cousin to "labor of the negative" at the level of the substance (extraction Silent Key 2, line 2970).
  • Operative through Absolute Knowing: §788 (self-consciousness positing thinghood through Entäußerung), §796, §803, §807 ("this sacrifice is the relinquishing") — the dialectical engine continues to operate at the terminus.

Details

Pinkard's Translation Choice (p. xlii, lines 422–424)

Pinkard's translator's introduction explicitly flags Entäußerung as one of the renderings most likely to be contested. Three alternatives circulate in the English literature:

  1. "alienation" — historically dominant under the Marxist reception; conflates Entäußerung with Entfremdung and loses the structural-positive sense in which spirit gives itself actuality through self-relinquishing.
  2. "externalization" — preserves the äußer (outer) stem but loses the kenotic resonance and reads as a neutral spatial relation rather than the substantive self-emptying.
  3. "objectification" — Hegel's own later (post-Phenomenology) usage moves in this direction, but Pinkard refuses to retroject it into the 1807 text.

Pinkard chooses "relinquishing" because the word does precisely the work of the Lutheran-kenotic register: to relinquish is to give up what one is, into another, such that one is the giving-up. Luther's Bible renders kenosis in Phil. 2:6–8 — "though he was in the form of God, [Christ] did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied himself" — as Entäußerung. Hegel's word inherits the theological structure of self-emptying that constitutes the self-emptier. The Lutheran-kenotic resonance is load-bearing in §658 (the beautiful soul as the figure that cannot perform Entäußerung) and §671 (the forgiveness "Yes" as the I returning from Entäußerung into unity).

Self-Alienated Spirit (§§483–485)

The opening of the Spirit B chapter introduces the figure that gives the chapter its name: der sich entfremdete Geist, self-alienated spirit. Crucially, Hegel does not present this as a defective shape that spirit must escape. Spirit whose substance is its own self-relinquishing (Entäußerung) is "not a defective state of an originally unified spirit, but the very form in which post-ethical spirit gives itself actuality" (extraction line 1886).

This formulation must be carefully distinguished from two adjacent shapes the Phenomenology has already worked through:

  1. The unhappy consciousness — which lacks substance and seeks unification with an unchanging that it cannot reach. Self-alienated spirit has substance; the substance is the relinquishing.
  2. The ethical world's tragic conflict — which is local (Antigone vs. Creon) and resolved by death. Self-alienated spirit's alienation is structural and pervasive — the very form in which the modern (post-Greek, post-Roman) world is actual.

The §§483–485 passage anchors the wider structural sense of Entäußerung that Marx will later narrow. "Hegel's Entfremdung/Entäußerung is the actuality of substance — without alienation, no substance, no individuality" (extraction line 1930). Marx's appropriation will critically narrow the concept (alienation under specific conditions of wage-labor, fixable by their abolition); Hegel holds the wider register.

The Beautiful Soul's Refusal (§§657–668)

In the Conscience-Beautiful-Soul-Forgiveness arc of Spirit C, Entäußerung shifts register: from the substance-level operation of §§483–485 to the subjectivity-to-subjectivity operation of mutual recognition. Hegel uses the same word for both, but the operations are structurally distinct (see Open Questions).

The beautiful soul is diagnostic precisely as the figure that refuses Entäußerung. §658, fn. 172 (line 4018) glosses the German: "Kraft der Entäußerung" — the force or power of relinquishing. The beautiful soul "lacks the force to relinquish itself" and so "to preserve the purity of its heart, it flees from contact with actuality, and it steadfastly perseveres in its obstinate powerlessness to renounce its own self" (§658, line 4015). The figure consequently self-cancels: "burning embers gradually die out, and, as they do, the beautiful soul vanishes like a shapeless vapor dissolving into thin air" (line 4021).

The hard heart — the judging consciousness that also refuses Entäußerung, but in a different register — appears at §§663–667 (lines 4040–4067) as the more hypocritical of the pair: it treats its judgment as itself an action while remaining inactive. Hegel pairs the hard heart with the beautiful soul as the same structural failure — both refuse the Entäußerung that conscience requires for actuality.

The Forgiveness "Yes" (§§668–671)

The transition out of the Beautiful-Soul-Hard-Heart impasse is Entäußerung itself, now positively enacted. At §668 (line 4067) the judging consciousness must enact Entäußerung in forgiveness — must relinquish its judgment, its hard-hearted self-certainty, and recognize the other. The structural payoff is at §671 (line 4094):

"Through this Entäußerung, this knowing… returns back into the unity of the self."

The "Yes" of mutual forgiveness is the I returning from Entäußerung into unity. This is the dialectical structure of recognition: passage through the other's recognition is the form in which the self becomes actual to itself. The transition to Religion (§§672ff.) is structurally enabled by this enacted Entäußerung: spirit having achieved mutual recognition at the level of conscience can now know itself as spirit in the religious community.

Operative Through Absolute Knowing (§§788, 796, 803, 807)

Entäußerung is not exhausted by the Spirit chapter. It continues to operate as the dialectical engine through Absolute Knowing:

  • §788 (line 4694): "self-consciousness relinquishing itself posits thinghood" — the double movement in which the object exhibits itself as vanishing AND self-consciousness relinquishes itself, positing thinghood, then takes both back. The structure of the §671 "Yes" reappears at the abstract-conceptual level.
  • §807 (line 4836): "this sacrifice is the relinquishing" — absolute knowing's own sacrifice of the form of pure concept and re-entry into consciousness is articulated as Entäußerung. The terminus does not transcend the operation; it performs it.

The Silent Key entry (line 2970) of the extraction note registers this: Entäußerung is "the operative mechanism of self-doubling-and-return — the structural cousin to 'labor of the negative' but at the level of the self rather than the substance."

What the Concept Does

  1. It names the structural form of substance's actuality. Without Entäußerung, no substance — spirit would remain abstract immediate self-identity. Spirit becomes actual by relinquishing itself into otherness and returning. The §§483–485 formulation is Hegel's most explicit statement of this.
  2. It supplies the diagnostic criterion at the Beautiful-Soul-Forgiveness arc. The pathological shapes (beautiful soul, hard heart) are diagnosed as such by their refusal of Entäußerung; the curative shape (mutual forgiveness) is constituted as such by enacted Entäußerung.
  3. It preserves the kenotic-theological reading-line of Hegel. The Lutheran-kenotic resonance Pinkard preserves makes available a theological reading of the Phenomenology (spirit's self-relinquishment as Christological structure) that the Marxist reception suppressed.
  4. It anchors the cross-reception with Marx. Marx's Entfremdung lineage operates on Hegel's Entäußerung; understanding what Marx narrowed requires understanding the wider structural sense Hegel had.

What It Rejects

  • The picture of substance as self-identical immediacy. Substance gives itself actuality only through self-relinquishing; an unrelinquishing substance would be abstract self-identity, not actual spirit.
  • The beautiful soul's purity-preserving stance. To refuse Entäußerung in the name of preserving the inner self is to dissolve into vapor — the inner self that refuses to relinquish itself has nothing actually to preserve.
  • The hard heart's judging-without-acting. Judgment that refuses Entäußerung in the name of moral superiority is the more hypocritical failure: it treats judgment itself as action while remaining inactive.
  • The narrowing of alienation to wage-labor conditions. Marx's appropriation, while genuine, leaves untouched the wider structural register in which alienation is the mode of actuality of any substance — not a contingent condition fixable by political-economic reform.

Stakes

If Entäußerung is accepted as Hegel describes it:

  • The Phenomenology's self-alienated spirit chapter is read as a structural-positive claim about how modern spirit becomes actual, not as a negative diagnosis of modernity awaiting a return-to-unity solution.
  • The Beautiful-Soul-Forgiveness arc gains a single diagnostic-and-curative principle: Kraft der Entäußerung (the force of relinquishing). The pathological shapes lack it; the curative shape enacts it.
  • The kenotic-Christological reading of Hegel becomes textually-philologically grounded (in Pinkard's translation choice and the §658 Lutheran resonance), independent of whether one accepts a theological Hegel.
  • The Marx reception is reframed: Entfremdung is a narrowed-and-politicized inheritance of Entäußerung, not a critical replacement of it; the wider Hegelian register remains available for non-Marxist readings.

If Entäußerung is rejected (or collapsed into Marxian Entfremdung):

  • The §§483–485 formulation reads as obscure metaphysics; Hegel's claim that alienation is the actuality of substance collapses into a confused statement about modern social pathology.
  • The diagnostic logic of the Beautiful Soul disappears; the §658 Kraft der Entäußerung footnote becomes inscrutable.
  • The §671 "Yes" loses its structural reading; forgiveness becomes an inexplicable rhetorical gesture rather than the enacted Entäußerung of judging consciousness.

Problem-Space

Entäußerung addresses the problem of how substance becomes actual without being a defective immediacy — the problem any post-Spinozist substance-philosophy must face. Spinoza's substance is fully actual in itself; for Hegel, this Spinozist substance is abstract — substance becomes concrete-actual only through self-relinquishing into determinations that return. Entäußerung is Hegel's name for this becoming-concrete operation at the substance-level, and (in the Spirit chapter) at the self-level.

The problem recurs in two forms the wiki tracks: (1) the Marx reception's narrowing of alienation to political-economic conditions; (2) the post-Hegelian theological reception (Tillich, Moltmann, Bonhoeffer) of kenosis as a structural feature of God's relation to the world — which inherits the Lutheran-Hegelian resonance Pinkard preserves.

Connections

  • is the substantive register operated by aufhebenAufheben is the categorial operator (cancel-and-preserve-as-moment); Entäußerung is the substantive register at the level of the self/substance (self-relinquishing-and-returning). The two are structurally related: every Aufheben of a self-determination involves an Entäußerung; not every Entäußerung is named as an Aufheben.
  • contrasts with the Marxian Entfremdung — Marx narrows Hegel's wider structural sense to alienation under specific wage-labor conditions, fixable by their abolition; Hegel holds the wider register in which alienation is the mode in which spirit gives itself actuality at all (extraction line 1930).
  • is the actuality of substance in the *Phenomenology of Spirit* §§483–485 — Spirit whose substance is its own self-relinquishing; not a defective state but the very form in which post-ethical spirit gives itself actuality.
  • is operative through absolute-knowing — §788 (self-consciousness positing thinghood through Entäußerung), §796, §803, §807 ("this sacrifice is the relinquishing"); the dialectical engine continues at the terminus.
  • is the form alienated by bildung — modern Bildung is the form in which the individual becomes actual by relinquishing natural substance (¶488); Entäußerung names the operation, Bildung names its historical-cultural form.
  • contrasts with unhappy-consciousness — the unhappy consciousness lacks substance and seeks unification with an unchanging it cannot reach; self-alienated spirit has substance, and the substance is the relinquishing.
  • shares mechanism with the wiki's "labor of the negative / die Arbeit des Negativen" HUB motif — both name the self-doubling-and-return that constitutes spirit's actuality; Entäußerung operates at the level of the self, "labor of the negative" at the level of substance / determination (per extraction Silent Key 2, line 2970).
  • carries the Lutheran-kenotic resonance of Phil. 2:6–8 — Luther's Entäußerung for Christ's kenosis is the load-bearing theological background Pinkard preserves; relevant to the wiki's tracking of christian-love and the Trinity-as-dialectical-articulation extraction (line 2413, Claim 12).

Open Questions

  • How does Entäußerung in §§483–485 (substance-level) relate to Entäußerung in §§657–671 (subjectivity-to-subjectivity)? Hegel uses one word for two structurally different operations: substance's self-relinquishing into determinations vs. judging-consciousness's relinquishing-itself-toward-the-other in forgiveness. Whether this is a deliberate dialectical homology (same operation, two registers) or a polysemous overload requires careful tracking; the §807 "sacrifice is the relinquishing" passage suggests Hegel reads them as the same operation at different levels.
  • Does the Lutheran-kenotic resonance Pinkard preserves require a theological reading of Hegel, or can it be honored without one? Pinkard himself reads Hegel as a post-theological philosopher of social-historical normativity, yet preserves the kenotic word. The wiki's tracking of the two-hegels-1807-1827 question bears on this: a "closed-systematic" Hegel may need the theological resonance; an "open-historical" Hegel may not.
  • Is Marx's narrowing of Entäußerung to Entfremdung a loss or a sharpening? The standard Marxist reading treats it as critical sharpening: Hegel's mystified-metaphysical alienation is demystified into concrete political-economic alienation. The wider Hegelian register objection: Marx's narrowing makes invisible the structural-positive sense in which alienation is the mode of actuality of any self-articulating substance, not a contingent feature of capitalism. The question is whether something of philosophical importance is lost by the narrowing.
