The Antithetic Critique of Sartre
Merleau-Ponty's diagnostic that Sartre's L'Être et le néant (1943) "remains too exclusively antithetic" — that Sartre presents the for-itself / in-itself and the for-myself / for-others relations as alternatives rather than as "the living bond and communication between one term and the other." First published in Sense and Non-Sense's "Battle over Existentialism" (Chapter 6, Les Temps Modernes No. 2, November 1945) as friendly amendment, the same structural critique becomes the basis for the political break in Adventures of the Dialectic's "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism" (1955) — ten years later, with the same content but a different political register (live claim, see claims#sartre-too-antithetic-critique-already-1945). The critique pairs with the diagnosis that "Sartre lacks a theory of passivity."
Key Points
- The 1945 formulation: "L'Être et le néant remains too exclusively antithetic; the antithesis of my view of myself and another's view of me, the antithesis of the for itself and the in itself often seem to be alternatives instead of being described as the living bond and communication between one term and the other" (Battle over Existentialism p. 72).
- The companion diagnosis: Sartre puts off the description of "the realization of nothingness in being — which is action and which makes morality possible" to a later work; the book "highlights the question of passivity but does not develop a theory of passivity"; we should "expect the author to elaborate a theory of passivity" (p. 75).
- The 1945 essay frames the critique as defense + amendment: MP defends Sartre against Catholic and Marxist attacks ("One may well ask on which side is the 'materialism'", p. 75) and offers the antithetic-critique as internal observation.
- The same structural critique becomes politically mobilized in AdV-1955: Sartre's "ultrabolshevism" is treated as the political symptom of the same antithetic structure that the 1945 essay had diagnosed philosophically.
- The temporal symmetry is interpretively significant: the philosophical content of the critique is constant from 1945 to 1955; what changes is the political register and MP's willingness to mobilize the critique for a public break.
What the Concept Does
-
It diagnoses what Sartre's ontology lacks. L'Être et le néant gives an uncompromised description of the for-itself (consciousness as nothingness) and the in-itself (being as plenitude), and it gives an antithetic description of intersubjectivity (the for-others is the alienating gaze). What it does not give is the dialectical mediation: the description of how the two terms communicate, modify each other, and constitute an "Inter-monde" of intersubjective existence.
-
It explains why Sartre cannot ground morality, history, or social ontology adequately. Without the theory of passivity / mediation, Sartre's freedom is "a-cosmic," his consciousness is "a pure nothing... at the world but not in it." Society and history therefore have no adequate ontological place in L'Être et le néant; they appear as external constraints on freedom, not as the milieu in which freedom is realized.
-
It pre-figures the political break of 1955. AdV's diagnosis of Sartre's "ultrabolshevism" — that Sartre's existentialist subjectivism, when applied to politics, generates an absolutist commitment to the Party indistinguishable from authoritarian voluntarism — is the political symptom of the same antithetic structure.
-
It is offered, in 1945, as a defense of Sartre's project. MP is not breaking with Sartre in 1945; he is helping. The same analysis that grounds the 1955 break is, in 1945, a contribution to the joint Temps Modernes programme.
What It Rejects
- Sartre's antithetic ontology of for-itself / in-itself and for-myself / for-others read as alternatives.
- The view that L'Être et le néant is structurally complete rather than awaiting "a theory of passivity."
- The Catholic critique of Sartre (Marcel, Mercier) that rejects the in-itself outright — MP defends Sartre against this critique while offering the internal one.
- The Marxist critique of Sartre (Lefebvre) that rejects the for-itself outright — MP defends against this also.
Stakes
If accepted:
- The structural critique that becomes AdV's break is shown to be philosophical, not political: it does not depend on the 1950s Cold War alignments; it is a constant of MP's reading of Sartre from 1945 forward.
- Sartre's later Critique de la raison dialectique (1960) — which acknowledges MP's converted Sartre to praxis — appears as Sartre's response to a critique he had received in print since 1945.
- The 1955 break, often treated as MP's reaction to the politics of the early 1950s, is partly a delayed consequence of a 1945 philosophical disagreement.
Problem-Space
The concept addresses the problem of the dialectical mediation between consciousness and being — how the for-itself and the in-itself can communicate without one being reduced to the other. Sartre's ontology poses but does not solve this problem; MP's own work, beginning with Phenomenology of Perception and culminating in V&I's flesh-doctrine, can be read as the sustained attempt to solve it. The "antithetic critique" is the diagnostic that names what is unsolved in Sartre.
The 1953 ILUL Anchor — Densest Pre-1955 Mobilization
The 2026-05-16 ingest of ILUL reveals an intermediate moment between 1945 (philosophical statement) and 1955 (political mobilization): the 1953 Sartre/Parain Appendix in ILUL is the densest pre-1955 anchor of the critique in the language register. Three operative moves there:
- The Stendhal parenthetical at [165] — "(The 'naturalness' of Stendhal is the problem of others resolved practically, [. . .] the advent of a transparency in the relation with others, [a] transparency that is neither given nor reflexive, but the very transcendence of a praxis that transforms its given conditions)". This is the 1953 practical resolution of the antithetic problem — what literature (Stendhal) does in praxis that Sartre's theory cannot do.
- The a-focalism coinage at [168]v — "a sort of a-focalism: there is no center and periphery, no hierarchy, no intelligible place where consciousness is concentrated, it is by definition pluripresence [ubiquité]". This names the positive consciousness-structure MP is proposing against Sartre's centripetal cogito; the term foreshadows V&I "flesh of language."
- The praxis and transparency operative pair across Appendix [165]–[168]v supplies the third-term that the for-itself/in-itself / for-myself/for-others antithetic structure lacks.
The 1953 practical resolution thus stands two years before the 1955 political break, in the same language-philosophical register that the wiki's claims#stendhal-naturalness-practically-resolves-sartre-antithetic consolidates. The 1945 → 1953 → 1955 trajectory is now visible end-to-end.
Connections
- first published in Battle over Existentialism (Nov 1945).
- densely anchored in 1953 by ILUL Appendix [165]–[168]v — the practical resolution stage.
- politically mobilized in merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic — "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism."
- applied to jean-paul-sartre — the entity page should anchor 1945, 1953, and 1955 versions.
- contains the theory of passivity desideratum — "expect the author to elaborate a theory of passivity" (Battle p. 75); the term itself becomes structural in MP's late institution-passivity work (merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity).
- contrasts with MP's own reversibility / chiasm doctrine, which is the positive reply to Sartre's antithetic structure.
- shares mechanism with the a-focalism coinage and stendhalian-naturalness (forthcoming) — the 1953 positive replies coordinate with the 1945 negative diagnosis.
- shares mechanism with praxis — load-bearing third term across ILUL Appendix [165]–[168]v (Stendhal naturalness as praxis; Lacanian psychoanalysis as relation-of-praxis; pre-objective language as speech-praxis); the operative concept the for-itself/in-itself / for-myself/for-others antithetic structure lacks.
Motif Weight & Corpus Recurrence
This concept is tracked at corpus level in motifs under §"antithetic critique of Sartre / theory of passivity Sartre lacks" as a HUB motif, attested across 4 sources (see motifs.md for the current attestation list, source-level weights, and the 1945 → 1953 → 1955 trajectory anchored at S&NS Battle over Existentialism, ILUL Appendix [165]–[168]v as densest pre-1955 anchor in the language register, AdV "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism," and I&P as the theory-of-passivity development). Update both this section and the motifs.md entry when corpus weight shifts.
Open Questions
- The genealogy from 1945 theory of passivity desideratum to MP's 1954-55 lectures on institution and passivity is implicit but not yet fully traced. Both name the same structural lack in Sartre's ontology, but the 1954-55 development goes well beyond the 1945 diagnosis.
- Whether the AdV-1955 political mobilization is legitimate given the 1945 philosophical statement is itself a question. Sartre's defenders (Camus on the same page) argue the political mobilization adds a charge the philosophical critique did not warrant.
Synthetic Claims
- supported claim, see claims#stendhal-naturalness-practically-resolves-sartre-antithetic — Stendhal's "naturalness" is the practical resolution of Sartre's theoretical impasse; the 1953 Monday course's Stendhal block + Sartre/Parain Appendix are two sides of one dialectical argument. The 1953 ILUL Anchor section above operationalizes this claim.
- live claim, see claims#sartre-too-antithetic-critique-already-1945 — the "remains too exclusively antithetic" critique is first published in November 1945 (LTM No. 2), ten years before AdV's break; the 1945 → 1953 → 1955 trajectory is continuous, with Sartre's Critique de la raison dialectique (1960) legible as response to a critique he had received in print since 1945.
