Claim

MP's diagnosis of L'Être et le néant as "remaining too exclusively antithetic" — and the companion diagnosis that Sartre lacks "a theory of passivity" — is first published in Sense and Non-Sense's "Battle over Existentialism" (Les Temps modernes No. 2, November 1945), within a defense of Sartre's book against Catholic and Marxist critics. The same structural critique becomes the basis for the political break in Adventures of the Dialectic (1955), Ch. 5 "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism." The philosophical content of the critique is constant from 1945 to 1955; what changes is the political register and MP's willingness to mobilize the critique for a public break. This temporal symmetry — that the AdV-1955 break is not a new objection but the political mobilization of an objection MP had stated in print since November 1945 — has a falsifiable structural consequence: Sartre's Critique de la raison dialectique (1960), which moves Sartre toward praxis and dialectical mediation, can be read as Sartre's response to a critique he had received in print since November 1945.
