Claim
MP's diagnosis of L'Être et le néant as "remaining too exclusively antithetic" — and the companion diagnosis that Sartre lacks "a theory of passivity" — is first published in Sense and Non-Sense's "Battle over Existentialism" (Les Temps modernes No. 2, November 1945), within a defense of Sartre's book against Catholic and Marxist critics. The same structural critique becomes the basis for the political break in Adventures of the Dialectic (1955), Ch. 5 "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism." The philosophical content of the critique is constant from 1945 to 1955; what changes is the political register and MP's willingness to mobilize the critique for a public break. This temporal symmetry — that the AdV-1955 break is not a new objection but the political mobilization of an objection MP had stated in print since November 1945 — has a falsifiable structural consequence: Sartre's Critique de la raison dialectique (1960), which moves Sartre toward praxis and dialectical mediation, can be read as Sartre's response to a critique he had received in print since November 1945.
Evidence
- merleau-ponty-1948-sense-and-non-sense, "Battle over Existentialism," p. 72 — "L'Être et le néant remains too exclusively antithetic; the antithesis of my view of myself and another's view of me, the antithesis of the for itself and the in itself often seem to be alternatives instead of being described as the living bond and communication between one term and the other."
- merleau-ponty-1948-sense-and-non-sense, "Battle over Existentialism," p. 75 — "we expect the author to elaborate a theory of passivity"; Sartre puts off "the realization of nothingness in being — which is action and which makes morality possible" to a later work.
- merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic Ch. 5 "Sartre and Ultrabolshevism" — mobilizes the same structural critique for the political break with Sartre and the PCF.
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript p. 147 — Sartre's 1961 partial recantation of B&N's responsibility-doctrine: "was not applicable as such to historical man." Read as Sartre's late acknowledgment that MP's 1945 antithetic-critique was correct.
Counterpressure / Limits
- In 1945, MP frames the antithetic critique as friendly amendment offered inside a defense of Sartre's book against Catholic and Marxist critics. The 1955 mobilization for the political break is a substantial change in register, not just in conclusion. A critic could argue that the change in register is large enough that "same critique" is misleading.
- The companion "theory of passivity" desideratum (1945) is fulfilled by MP's own 1954-55 Institution and Passivity course, not by Sartre. So the constructive part of the 1945 critique (Sartre needs a theory of passivity) is taken up by MP, not by Sartre — which means the 1955 break's claim that Sartre's politics suffer from the antithetic structure is also a claim that Sartre never developed the missing piece.
- The existing claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture candidate locates a structural anticipation of the break in Humanism and Terror (1947). The 1945 dating in this claim pushes the anticipation 2 years earlier; the two claims are not incompatible, but the genealogy needs articulation: 1945 philosophical antithetic-critique → 1947 HT political-philosophical anticipation → 1955 AdV public break.
- Beauvoir's "Merleau-Ponty et le pseudo-sartrisme" (LTM June 1955) — Sartre's published reply via Beauvoir — disputes the political mobilization rather than the philosophical critique itself, which provides circumstantial support that the 1945 and 1955 versions of the critique are continuous.
Payoff
The claim corrects a common periodization that treats MP's Adventures of the Dialectic (1955) as the origin of his structural critique of Sartre. It is not — the philosophical objection ("remains too exclusively antithetic"; "lacks a theory of passivity") is in print in Les Temps modernes No. 2 (November 1945), within a defense of Sartre's book. The 1955 break thus becomes legible as the political mobilization of an objection MP had held in print since 1945, not a 1955 reaction to Sartre's Communistes et la paix. This in turn changes how to read MP's 1953 inaugural lecture, the 1954-55 institution course (which develops the missing "theory of passivity"), and the 1955 break — they are continuous with a 1945 philosophical position, not separate stages.

claim-promotion-reviewerverdict: 3-test PASS; Test 5 CONCERN — the AdV Ch. 5 passage-level juxtaposed quotation (paired against S&NS Battle pp. 72-75) remains pending per the 2026-05-09 Status History entry; without that juxtaposition the structural-language-identity claim is asserted but not exhibited at passage grain. The ILUL-1953 anchor (now mobilized on antithetic-critique-of-sartre via the 1953 ILUL Anchor section) supplies an intermediate middle-term datapoint between 1945 and 1955. Held atlive; future supported promotion conditional on the AdV Ch. 5 passage-level juxtaposition (alongside the 1953 ILUL evidence) and the compatibility check with claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture.
