Valéry's *éventuel* names the implex's distinctive mode — neither Aristotelian potential, nor Bergsonian virtual, nor logical possible — and corrects the wiki's residual treatment of the implex as latent fullness
ID: valery-eventuel-mode Title: Valéry's éventuel names the implex's distinctive mode — neither Aristotelian potential, nor Bergsonian virtual, nor logical possible — and corrects the wiki's residual treatment of the implex as latent fullness Status: candidate Confidence: low Claim type: philological Created: 2026-04-28 Updated: 2026-04-28 Sources: valery-1960-oeuvres-ii Wiki homes: implex, passivity
Claim
In L'Idée fixe raw 5144, Valéry names the implex's grammar as the mode "ce en quoi et par quoi nous sommes éventuels." The eventual is neither potential (Aristotelian, telos-directed), nor virtual (Bergsonian, latent fullness), nor possible (logical-modal). It names a body's range of eventually-coming-about responses without commitment to telos or to stored fullness. The wiki's implex page distinguishes the implex from Aristotelian potency (correctly) but does not yet distinguish it from Bergsonian / Deleuzian virtual; the éventuel register is what does this work in Valéry's text. Promoting this would refine the wiki's reading of MP's redoubled-negation passage at I&P 158–159 by clarifying that the implex's distinctive mode is éventualité — capacity-without-telos-and-without-stored-fullness — not virtuality.
Evidence
- valery-1960-oeuvres-ii — L'Idée fixe raw 5144: "j'entends par l'lmplexe, ce en quoi et par quoi nous sommes éventuels… Nous, en gros; et Nous, en détail…" The verb-conjugation example at raw 5084–5104 ("Je marche / Je marcherai / Je marchais") illustrates the éventuel in tense-grammar form: each tense is a different eventuality, and the implex is the variation across the eventualities.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The Bergsonian-virtual contrast requires a Bergson check this ingest does not perform. Whether éventualité really fails to map onto Bergsonian virtuel (in Matière et mémoire and L'Évolution créatrice) is a comparative question the wiki cannot adjudicate from the L'Idée fixe attestation alone. Until a Bergson-side reading is in
raw/or extraction notes, the contrast remains philologically motivated but not cross-author-evidenced. - The Deleuzian-virtual reading (which deepens the Bergsonian into a robust ontological mode) is even further from this ingest's reach. Deleuze on the virtual (Différence et répétition; Le Bergsonisme) is not engaged.
Payoff
If supportable post-Bergson-check, the éventuel register sharpens the wiki's implex page from a two-mode contrast (implex vs Aristotelian potency) to a three-mode contrast (implex vs potency vs virtual). It also refines the reading of MP's redoubled-negation passage by clarifying the implex's distinctive grammar.
Status History
- 2026-04-28 — created as
candidate. The claim is articulated and anchored in L'Idée fixe raw 5144, but the philological-corrective sub-thesis (eventual ≠ virtual) requires a Bergson-side reading to be promoted. Until then, implex records the éventuel mode descriptively (in the new "Eventual mode" Key Point) without making the corrective Bergson-contrast claim load-bearing.
