MP's *topologie de la chair / topologie de l'être* derives from Piaget's *La représentation de l'espace chez l'enfant* (1948) — mediated by Schilder — not from Heidegger's *Topologie des Seins* and not from Lacan

ID: topology-from-piaget-not-heidegger-not-lacan Title: MP's topologie de la chair / topologie de l'être derives from Piaget's La représentation de l'espace chez l'enfant (1948) — mediated by Schilder — not from Heidegger's Topologie des Seins and not from Lacan Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / philological / corrective Created: 2026-05-05 Updated: 2026-07-28 Sources: saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte Wiki homes: topology-mp, chiasm, indirect-ontology

Claim

MP's topologie de la chair / topologie de l'être (≈80 attestations Oct 1959 – Sep 1960) derives from Jean Piaget's La représentation de l'espace chez l'enfant (1948), mediated by Paul Schilder's body-image/body-schema work — not from Heidegger's "topology of being" (Zur Seinsfrage) and not from Lacan. The most important early MP note (October 1959) speaks of "espace topologique" as a "milieu où se circonscrivent des rapports de voisinage, d'enveloppement," contrasted with "espace euclidien" as the model of projective being. The April–May 1960 Être et Monde feuillets cite Piaget over 100 times. L'Œil et l'Esprit (Jul–Aug 1960) was prepared in the topology context. The Signes preface (Sep 1960) — MP's only published "topologie de l'être" reference — caveats it: "ce qu'on pourrait appeler la topologie de l'être." Piaget's five topological relations (voisinage, séparation/ségrégation, ordre, enveloppement, continuité) are MP's grammar for chair-spatiality. Lacan's topology proper begins only February 1972 (the nœud borroméen), eleven years after MP's death: any "MP-as-proto-Lacan-topologist" reading is anachronistic.

Evidence

  • saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte — Ch. VI §1–2, raw lines 1538–1612. The detailed Piaget-Schilder genealogy. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a Argument 16.
  • saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte — raw line 1580. MP's marginal note explicitly cites Piaget as the topology-source.
  • saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte — Ch. VI §3a, raw line 1622. The cardinal promiscuité de l'Être formula on the Piaget critique: "Cela n'est, pour Piaget, que confusion. Pour nous, c'est promiscuité de l'Être." Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a Argument 17. MP's reception of Piaget is transformation through critique, not adoption.
  • saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte — Ch. VI §3c, raw lines 1638–1645. The topology / language fork distinguishing MP from Lacan: MP's "topologie de la chair" places desire as the animating principle of the body-schema and reads the unconscious as "être de promiscuité" coextensive with le sentir; Lacan's topology is combinatorial-formal, an algorithmics of the unconscious-as-langage. MP inverts Lacan's "inconscient structuré comme un langage": for MP "le langage est structuré comme le schéma corporel" — language as a "second corps." Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a Argument 18.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Single secondary source (Saint Aubert 2006). No other secondary monograph in raw/ performs the bibliothèque-personnelle audit of MP's Piaget-engagement. Heinbokel, Fóti, De Warren are not in raw/. The Piaget-genealogy reading is therefore single-tradition until corroborated.
  • Piaget-genealogy of MP's topology is contested by readers who emphasize MP's Heidegger-engagement. Heideggerian readers (Beaufret, certain Anglophone Heidegger-MP scholars) see MP's topology as inflected by Heidegger's Topologie des Seins even if MP's primary source is Piaget. Saint Aubert rejects this — but per claims#mp-heidegger-reception-archivally-thin (supported, this run), MP's Heidegger-engagement is archivally thin enough that the Heideggerian-inflection reading is itself under-supported.
  • The Lacan-topology temporal argument is empirically robust but does not by itself defeat the structural-parallel reading. A Lacanian could argue that MP's topology prefigures what Lacan later develops (the borromean knot, the sinthome) without claiming influence; this is the "MP-as-proto-Lacan" reading the temporal argument addresses, but a structural-parallel claim could still be made. Saint Aubert's stronger move is the content difference: combinatorial-formal (Lacan) vs. carnal-perceptual (MP).
  • (Consolidation 2026-07-28, C3 supported-jury — evidence-chain and rival-reading refuters, both REFUTED: the source does not flatly deny a Heidegger derivation of the phrase, and Counterpressure bullet 2 misstates it.) (Main-thread verified verbatim.) Saint Aubert's negative is scoped to thematic influence on the sense of the topological; he explicitly makes Heidegger's usage a plausible co-motivator of the expression topologie de l'être. The same line records that MP read Zur Seinsfrage "dans le courant de l'année 1958" and uses the expression in the spring-1959 Heidegger course "entre guillemets, suivie de la mention « Seinsfrage »". Saint Aubert reinforces the point from the other side at raw 1628: MP "parlera volontiers de l'« être topologique » et presque jamais de « topologie de l'être »" — he handles the Heideggerian locution with tongs. So the live rival is dual provenance: Piaget supplies the content and the concept of topological space; Heidegger supplies the phrase and the emulative impetus. Counterpressure bullet 2's "Saint Aubert rejects this" is therefore too strong, and none of this hedge is recorded in the entry, the extraction note's Argument 16, or topology-mp.
  • (Consolidation 2026-07-28 — scope refuter, REFUTED: "mediated by Schilder" mis-states the mediation structure.) The Title asserts a serial chain (Piaget mediated by Schilder). Saint Aubert's structure is a double, parallel mediation: "La médiation de la théorie du schéma corporel vient donc doubler la médiation de Piaget" (raw 1606) — and, decisively, "Schilder, à notre connaissance, ne parle jamais de topologie" (raw 1610; both main-thread verified). Schilder supplies the schéma corporel register; Piaget alone supplies the topology (raw 1578: the source is "ni la topologie de l'être de Heidegger, ni la psychanalyse de Lacan, ni même directement les mathématiques de Bourbaki, mais l'épistémologie génétique de Jean Piaget"). The extraction-note Argument 16 that Evidence bullet 1 names as its anchor does not mention Schilder at all, and the claim's own Wiki home already flags what the claim states flatly (topology-mp: "the Schilder mediation is single-source on SA-2006", framed confidence: speculative).
  • (Consolidation 2026-07-28 — scope refuter, second leg.) "Lacan's topology proper begins only February 1972" trades on a narrowing ("proper") that the Payoff and the Wiki homes then drop. Saint Aubert records that Lacan works on mathematics in psychoanalysis "dès 1950", that the knot/geometry figures spill into his teaching, and that MP "n'a pu connaître que ce stade" — at seminars MP in fact attended (raw 1552–1554); what begins in February 1972 is only "la grande période de la topologie chez Lacan" (raw 1558). In the very passage Evidence bullet 4 rests on, SA writes "Tout en puisant tous les deux aux ressources structurelles de la topologie mathématique, l'usage qu'ils en font est différent" (raw 1638) — Lacan has a contemporaneous topology differing in use, not in existence. The eleven-years sentence is true only under "Lacan's mature theory-bearing topology", while Payoff item 2 ("It blocks Lacanian readings of late MP") and the restatements on topology-mp, chiasm and indirect-ontology deploy it under the broad reading.
  • A third candidate source and the archival asymmetry are unregistered. Saint Aubert's §1c treats mathematics / Bourbaki at length (raw 1560–1568), and the entry engages neither that leg nor the biology/embryogenesis provenance of MP's topological figures. More structurally: everything that establishes derivation rather than co-presence — the ~80 attestations, the 100+ Piaget occurrences in the Être et Monde feuillets, the marginal note — comes from unpublished feuillets that only Saint Aubert has audited, inside a book whose load-bearing thesis is that there is no genuine Heideggerian turn in late MP. A positive non-Heideggerian provenance, found by the scholar who set out to remove Heidegger, in an archive only he has read, is the shape of a finding a second archivist should confirm. The published record the wiki holds is compatible with a weaker story: MP's published engagements with Piaget are uniformly hostile (V&I working notes: "Piaget's logicism is an absolutization of our culture"; "someone like Piaget ignores this absolutely").

Payoff

The claim re-grounds topology-mp (or whatever the wiki's topology-of-flesh / topology-of-being concept page is) on a Piaget-mediated genealogy. This has three concrete consequences:

  1. It complements claims#indirect-ontology-blondel-not-heidegger and claims#mp-heidegger-reception-archivally-thin (both supported, this run). The Heidegger-removal from MP's late genealogy is now triangulated across three loci: indirect ontology (Blondel), late ontology more broadly (Brunschvicg-Biran), and topology (Piaget). Three positive-genealogy claims combined with one negative-archival claim defeat the Heideggerian-turn reading robustly.
  2. It blocks Lacanian readings of late MP. Lacan's topology proper begins eleven years after MP's death; "MP-as-proto-Lacan-topologist" readings are anachronistic. The wiki can now cite the temporal argument explicitly when engaging Lacanian-MP secondary literature.
  3. It positions MP's promiscuité de l'Être formula as the structural transformation of Piaget's confusion. The two terms are coordinate at the textual level (raw 1622: "Cela n'est, pour Piaget, que confusion. Pour nous, c'est promiscuité de l'Être") but ontologically opposite. Piaget treats topological infant-spatiality as "prélogique" — a mutilated thought to be replaced by adult euclidean intelligence. MP reads the same topology as the positive structure of desire and the body open to being. Coordinate with claims#non-philosophie-as-empietement-of-refused-world (live, this run): the promiscuité / empiétement cluster names what non-philosophie operates within.

Status History

  • 2026-05-05 — created at live (Phase 8 ninth run) after the saintaubert-2006-vers-une-ontologie-indirecte ingest. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the genealogical-philological-corrective claim is contestable against Heideggerianizing readings and against Lacanian-prefiguration readings; (2) anchored in SA-2006 Pass 2a Arguments 16–18 with raw-line references for the Piaget marginal note (raw 1580), the promiscuité de l'Être formula (raw 1620), and the topology / language fork distinguishing MP from Lacan (raw 1638–1645); (3) Counterpressure documents the single-source dependency, the Heideggerian-inflection alternative, and the Lacanian-structural-parallel residue. Promotion to supported would require either (a) ingesting Piaget's La représentation de l'espace chez l'enfant as primary source, or (b) corroborating secondary monograph performing the bibliothèque-personnelle audit of MP's Piaget-engagement.
  • 2026-05-05 — status: created as live; (lifecycle backfill 2026-07-11)
  • 2026-07-28 — C3 supported-jury blocked (verifier 4 PASS / 0 UNCERTAIN / 0 FAIL — all four anchors verify verbatim at raw, one off-by-two locator; 5-test HOLD, tests 1–4 PASS with CONCERNS on test 5, confidence stays medium and the reviewer explicitly recommends not lowering it; refuters 3x REFUTED — objections appended to Counterpressure; wf_c4dced48-cbd run 6, clean run), status stays live. Repairs applied this edit, main-thread re-verified against raw: the promiscuité de l'Être formula is at raw line 1622, not 1620 (line 1620 is the preceding "réhabilitation ontologique du sensible" paragraph) — corrected in Evidence bullet 3 and in Payoff item 3, which repeated the same locator. The upstream extraction note's Pass 2c line carries the same off-by-two and is left for a non-consolidation pass (extraction notes are outside consolidation write-scope); its Pass 2a Argument 17 is already correct at 1616–1622. Promotion conditions unchanged and still open (the entry's own 2026-05-05 criteria: ingest Piaget's La représentation de l'espace chez l'enfant, or a corroborating secondary monograph performing the bibliothèque-personnelle audit — Piaget's text is not in raw/, main-thread re-verified). Additionally required before a future gate: record Saint Aubert's raw-1542 concession of terminological encounter/émulation with Heidegger and narrow the Title's flat "not from Heidegger" on the topologie de l'être conjunct; restate "mediated by Schilder" as SA's doubling structure rather than a chain; and scope the Lacan sentence to Lacan's mature topology.
