Simmel's tragic structure — articulated in the 1923 fragment via the Aphrodite-from-foam image and the closing analysis of love-as-tragic — is distinct from both Hegelian tragic-as-collision-of-ethical-substances and Aristotelian tragic-as-fall-of-noble-character. On Simmel's account, tragedy is life's self-contradiction in producing its own trans-vital products: the source of the tragic is what the trans-vital owes its existence to — life itself. The shadow falls upward from life onto love, not from fate onto lovers (Aristotelian) and not from collision between two ethical substances (Hegelian).   • The Aphrodite-from-foam image is rhetorical, not argumentative. Simmel's deployment is poetic; the structural argument it sustains may not survive the removal of the image.
