Claim
Simmel's tragic structure — articulated in the 1923 fragment via the Aphrodite-from-foam image and the closing analysis of love-as-tragic — is distinct from both Hegelian tragic-as-collision-of-ethical-substances and Aristotelian tragic-as-fall-of-noble-character. On Simmel's account, tragedy is life's self-contradiction in producing its own trans-vital products: the source of the tragic is what the trans-vital owes its existence to — life itself. The shadow falls upward from life onto love, not from fate onto lovers (Aristotelian) and not from collision between two ethical substances (Hegelian). The trans-vital stratum is constitutively at odds with the life-stratum that produced it; their reconciliation is structurally impossible, and this impossibility is the form of the tragic.
Evidence
- simmel-1923-on-love-fragment Oakes pp. 188–193 (raw 235–245) — the Aphrodite-from-foam passage + the closing tragedy section. The structural formula: "love's tragedy is that the source of the tragic is what the trans-vital owes its existence to."
- Hegel, Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik (the tragic-collision treatment in the Aesthetics and at Phenomenology §VI on Antigone).
- Aristotle, Poetics on the fall of noble character via hamartia.
Counterpressure / Limits
- Simmel's tragic structure may collapse into the Hegelian. A defender of the Hegelian reading could argue that life-vs-trans-vital is a collision of ethical substances on Simmel's pattern, just at a higher abstraction; the distinction may be one of vocabulary not structure.
- The Aphrodite-from-foam image is rhetorical, not argumentative. Simmel's deployment is poetic; the structural argument it sustains may not survive the removal of the image.
- Single-source within Simmel. The tragedy doctrine has a longer development in Simmel's other works (e.g., the 1911 Hauptprobleme der Philosophie, the Lebensanschauung) that are not in raw.
- "Life's self-contradiction" is itself ambiguous. Does life contradict itself consciously (in which case it's closer to Hegelian self-othering) or blindly (in which case it's closer to Schopenhauerian will-against-itself)? Simmel does not fully disambiguate.
Payoff
If accepted, the claim (i) supplies a third fundamental form of the tragic alongside the Hegelian and Aristotelian, with structural specificity to life-philosophy; (ii) opens a Simmel-Nietzsche comparative axis on tragedy (Nietzsche's tragic-Dionysian against Simmel's tragic-trans-vital); (iii) provides the structural-philosophical foundation for the "tragedy of culture" theme that runs through later Frankfurt-school work on the dialectic of Enlightenment.

Held at candidate awaiting Simmel cross-source corroboration or Nietzsche/Frankfurt-school comparative deployment.
