Sartre 1961 manuscript dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934, grounded in their two childhoods
ID: sartre-childhood-as-philosophical-genealogy Title: Sartre 1961 manuscript dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934, grounded in their two childhoods Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-07-28 Sources: sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant, merleau-ponty-1964-signs Wiki homes: jean-paul-sartre, maurice-merleau-ponty
Claim
In the unpublished 1961 manuscript draft of Merleau-Ponty Vivant (translated 1984; truncated in Situations IV), Sartre dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934 — to their differential reception of Husserlian intentionality — and grounds that differential reception in their two childhoods (MP's prolonged maternal-filial envelopment vs Sartre's cast-out-from-childhood rupture-disposition — Sartre "of the second kind" in MP's typology, "cast out from it toward adult life," ms. p. 130 / raw line 83; his own gloss: "a free translation of the refusal of being born … creation ex nihilo," ms. p. 142 / raw line 199). On which reading — the wiki's inference from the manuscript, not Sartre's own statement (the manuscript truncates ca. 1946 and never mentions the 1953 break) — the political break of 1953 is downstream of, not constitutive of, the philosophical-genealogical divergence. (Corrected 2026-07-28: the Sartre-side pole previously read "ENS-modeled rupture-disposition" — a coinage anchored nowhere; the manuscript's ENS material is a shared formation where "we ignored each other," and the entry's own home jean-paul-sartre uses "cast-out child." The 1953 sentence previously carried no inference marker.)
Evidence
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript p. 139: "Spontaneity and liberty, the difference between them is nothing and everything: these words connected the outcome of our thoughts to our two births, our two childhoods, and all our choices." Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a + Part D candidate #1.
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript pp. 138–139 (the parallel-discovery thesis: "The same year, 1934, I was in Berlin … I discovered the notion of intention in Ideen," raw line 169); pp. 142–144 (continuity vs rupture as structural-temperamental contrast: the "Megarian ideology of discontinuity" vs "a philosophy of continuity," raw line 211). (The former third sub-anchor, "footnote 18," was struck 2026-07-28 — that footnote concerns the word envelopment only (raw lines 321/325) and anchors the sibling candidate claims#envelopment-as-sartrean-cardinal-reading, not this claim.)
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript p. 139 (raw line 169): "When we quarrelled, later, even if it was about an article written by a third party, it was always necessary to work back to the initial terms and redescend by stages to the subject of the dispute" — Sartre's own statement that later quarrels trace back to the 1934 initial terms; the anchor for the downstream-thesis sentence of the Claim. (Added 2026-07-28 — the downstream thesis previously carried no evidence bullet.)
- merleau-ponty-1964-signs Introduction (the "two ways of being young" passage Sartre uses as heuristic) — cited by Sartre's own fn. 14 as Signes (Gallimard, 1960) pp. 34–35 (raw Sartre line 316), quoted in the manuscript at p. 130 (raw line 83); in the ingested English McCleary edition the passage sits in the Introduction at raw marker {52} (raw Signs line 520), ≈ printed pp. 25–27 — exact English folio offset-derived, spot-check before precise citation. (Corrected 2026-07-28: previously "Preface pp. 34–35" — French Signes pagination attached to the English-edition wikilink, and the McCleary front matter is an Introduction, not a Preface.)
Counterpressure / Limits
- Sartre asserts childhood-explains-philosophical-disposition without arguing for it (extraction-note Pass 3 Part A).
- The cardinal formulation appears in a memorial essay where harmonization-narrative was expected, raising the question whether Sartre is over-structuring in the bereavement.
- Manuscript-vs-published: no footnote attests softening of the genealogical framing — fn. 18 concerns the word envelopment only (raw lines 321/325), and spontaneity-vs-liberty records that the spontaneity/liberty pair survives the 1961→1964 revision intact with only its scaffolding modified. (Corrected 2026-07-28: this bullet previously credited the entry with a fn-18-based self-retraction counterpressure the footnote does not support.)
- Sartre's own next paragraph pulls against reading 1934 as constitutive rupture (added 2026-07-28, raw line 171, p. 139): "No matter: we had had neighboring points of departure, we did the first stage together without noticing it, and we found, in our first experience, the same master, Husserl … Hardly had we received these weapons than we became brothers without knowing it; across conflicts and moods we remained so up to the end. Heidegger brought us even closer." On the same page, 1934 is the moment of fraternity; the "nothing and everything" sentence is deliberately two-sided and names a triad ("our two births, our two childhoods, and all our choices") whose third term resists childhood-determinism.
- The editor disputes the childhood-differential (added 2026-07-28, JBSP fn. 15, raw line 317): "there is more than a passing resemblance between Merleau-Ponty's childhood and that of Sartre himself" — both widowed mother, both bourgeois family — with the divergence located in the itinerary of maturation. If the childhoods resemble each other, the two-childhoods differential cannot carry the explanatory load.
- The existing claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture (candidate) already locates a structural anticipation of the rupture in 1947 — Sartre's 1934 dating and the H&T 1947 anticipation are not necessarily incompatible (the rupture can be philosophically present from 1934 and politically articulable from 1947), but the relation needs to be worked out. The harder case is the live sibling claims#sartre-too-antithetic-critique-already-1945: a divergence constituted in 1934 sits awkwardly with MP publicly defending L'Être et le néant in November 1945, offering his structural objection as friendly amendment. (Sibling tension added 2026-07-28.)
- C3 refuter objection (evidence-chain lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked. (1) Wrong-edition locator in the Signs bullet: "Preface pp. 34–35" attached French Signes (Gallimard 1960) folios to the English McCleary wikilink — at English printed pp. 34–35 the text is the Nizan/"Oedipal word" stretch, not the typology; the typology sits at raw marker {52} ≈ English pp. 25–26, and the manuscript's own fn. 14 fixes 34–35 as Gallimard pagination. The defect had already propagated to two-ways-of-being-young and jean-paul-sartre. (2) "ENS-modeled rupture-disposition" was unanchored and cut against the claim's own thesis: the manuscript grounds Sartre's side in his fled childhood ("cast out from it toward adult life … Sartre was of the second kind," ms. p. 130), while the École Normale appears only as the shared formation that produced no divergence ("we ignored each other," ms. p. 129) — an institutional-formation term on one side of a claim whose whole thesis is childhood-genealogy. Neither defect was fatal to the core (the 1934 dating and two-childhoods formulation verify at ms. pp. 138–139), but at the supported bar every anchor must verify as cited and every substantive Claim term must be warranted by an anchor. [Both repaired in this same run; see Status History.]
- C3 refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked — undefeated rival: the p. 139 passage is, in its local context, a convergence narrative, and Sartre explicitly denies the separative consequence the claim draws. The cardinal sentence sits inside a paragraph whose burden is sameness, and the very next paragraph reads: "No matter: we had had neighboring points of departure, we did the first stage together without noticing it, and we found, in our first experience, the same master, Husserl … Hardly had we received these weapons than we became brothers without knowing it; across conflicts and moods we remained so up to the end" (raw line 171, p. 139). On the rival reading, what Sartre dates to 1934 is a difference of inflection inside a shared program, which he then explicitly waives ("No matter") and declares non-separative. The claim read only the "everything" half of the deliberately two-sided "nothing and everything" and dropped the deflation that follows — a counter-passage the register had never seen (recorded nowhere in the wiki before this run). Corollary: the 1953-downstream sentence had no manuscript to be downstream of — the body never mentions 1953 (grep: editorial footnotes only), and where Sartre's completed text does reach political material he runs the dependence the other way (Moscow Trials / Humanisme et terreur as cause, fn. 52). Second rival: the "two ways of being young" heuristic is a Sartre-side retrofit — in MP's text the passage is about Sartre and Nizan; Sartre himself registers the mismatch ("Of whom was he speaking? Of me. At first. But the others, who are they? Nizan?") and closes it by an assimilation he flags as MP's ("No matter: Merleau assimilated the two cases," ms. pp. 129–130), under a self-acknowledged eulogist's licence ("this breathtaking liberty that we have in talking about the dead … he might have come to agree with me," ms. p. 132). Hold at
liveuntil Counterpressure engages the brothers-deflation and the Nizan-provenance, and until the 1953 sentence is anchored or marked as inference. [The counter-passages and the inference marker were written into the entry in this same run; the rival itself remains the open would-promote condition.] - C3 refuter objection (scope lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked. The claim was broader than, and in two places lexically inconsistent with, its own anchors: (1) "ENS-modeled" was an unanchored coinage equivocating on the claim's key term (childhood vs adult institutional formation), contradicted by the manuscript's ENS-as-shared-formation material and by the entry's own home jean-paul-sartre ("the cast-out child"); its verbatim cite-back sat on maurice-merleau-ponty. (2) The Signs bullet was an edition false friend (French folios under the English wikilink; "Preface" for what the McCleary edition titles Introduction), reducing the claim's two-source standing in practice to one source plus an unfollowable cross-reference. (3) A hedged, self-cancelling passage was cited as if flat: the anchoring sentence is explicitly two-sided ("the difference between them is nothing and everything") and names a triad whose third term ("and all our choices") the claim silently dropped; the next paragraph does convergence work the claim recruited for divergence-dating; and the 1953-downstream sentence was attributed by placement to a manuscript that truncates ca. 1946 — the wiki's inference, unmarked. [Legs (1), (2), and the inference-marking of (3) repaired in this same run; the two-sidedness of the anchor remains recorded above as counterpressure.]
Payoff
The claim re-bases the Sartre-MP divergence by 19 years (from the standard 1953-political-break to 1934-philosophical-genealogy; "13" corrected 2026-07-28 — it had been computed against the 1947 H&T baseline) and gives the wiki a documented Sartre-side position on the two-childhoods grounding. For the existing Sartre-MP family (claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture candidate — label corrected 2026-07-28; claims#faire-etre-vs-faire-exister-as-mp-sartre-axis candidate; this claim's siblings claims#mp-silent-marxist-temptation and claims#bn-freedom-not-applicable-to-historical-man), this is the earliest dating-anchor. What the four-anchor chronology buys (articulated at the 2026-07-28 jury): the family separates distinct senses of "the break" — constituted 1934 (this claim), articulable in print 1945 (claims#sartre-too-antithetic-critique-already-1945), politically anticipated 1947 (H&T), publicly mobilized 1955 (AdV), scope-conceded 1961 (bn-freedom) — so dating disputes in the secondary literature can be diagnosed as arguing past each other about which sense is at issue.

Repairs applied in-run, each reviewer/refuter-named and main-thread-verified: "ENS-modeled" → "cast-out-from-childhood" (anchored ms. p. 130 / raw 83, ms. p. 142 / raw 199; matches the entry's homes); the 1953-downstream sentence marked as the wiki's inference AND given its previously-missing anchor as a new Evidence bullet (raw 169, "work back to the initial terms"); fn-18 sub-anchor struck from Evidence (envelopment-only; belongs to the envelopment sibling); the Signs bullet's edition fixed (French Signes pp. 34–35 per Sartre's fn. 14; English McCleary Introduction ≈ pp. 25–27, offset-derived, spot-check before precise citation); Counterpressure fn-18 misattribution corrected; the two strongest in-artifact counter-passages added (raw 171 "brothers … up to the end" fraternity deflation; fn. 15 childhood-resemblance); the 1945-sibling tension added; Payoff arithmetic fixed (13 → 19 years) and the stalelivelabel on the h-and-t candidate corrected; the four-anchor chronology's payoff articulated (what the 1934/1945/1947/1955/1961 senses-of-the-break separation explains). Would promote: Counterpressure now carries the strongest objections — a future bid must answer the convergence-narrative rival (the "No matter … brothers" deflation) and the Nizan-retrofit rival, distinguish the attributive register (promotable) from the synthetic downstream-thesis register (single-witness), and pin the English Signs folio by targeted print check.
