Sartre 1961 manuscript dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934, grounded in their two childhoods
ID: sartre-childhood-as-philosophical-genealogy Title: Sartre 1961 manuscript dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934, grounded in their two childhoods Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-05-09 Sources: sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant, merleau-ponty-1964-signs Wiki homes: jean-paul-sartre, maurice-merleau-ponty
Claim
In the unpublished 1961 manuscript draft of Merleau-Ponty Vivant (translated 1984; truncated in Situations IV), Sartre dates the MP/Sartre philosophical divergence to 1934 — to their differential reception of Husserlian intentionality — and grounds that differential reception in their two childhoods (MP's prolonged maternal-filial envelopment vs Sartre's ENS-modeled rupture-disposition). The political break of 1953 is downstream of, not constitutive of, the philosophical-genealogical divergence.
Evidence
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript p. 139: "Spontaneity and liberty, the difference between them is nothing and everything: these words connected the outcome of our thoughts to our two births, our two childhoods, and all our choices." Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a + Part D candidate #1.
- sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant manuscript pp. 138–139 (the parallel-discovery thesis); pp. 142–144 (continuity vs rupture as structural-temperamental contrast); footnote 18 (the manuscript's stronger framing relative to Situations IV).
- merleau-ponty-1964-signs Preface pp. 34–35 (the "two ways of being young" passage Sartre uses as heuristic).
Counterpressure / Limits
- Sartre asserts childhood-explains-philosophical-disposition without arguing for it (extraction-note Pass 3 Part A).
- The cardinal formulation appears in a memorial essay where harmonization-narrative was expected, raising the question whether Sartre is over-structuring in the bereavement.
- The published Situations IV version softens this strong genealogical framing per footnote 18, suggesting Sartre himself retreated from it.
- The existing live claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture already locates a structural anticipation of the rupture in 1947 — Sartre's 1934 dating and the H&T 1947 anticipation are not necessarily incompatible (the rupture can be philosophically present from 1934 and politically articulable from 1947), but the relation needs to be worked out.
Payoff
The claim re-bases the Sartre-MP divergence by 13 years (from the standard 1953-political-break to 1934-philosophical-genealogy) and gives the wiki a documented Sartre-side position on the two-childhoods grounding. For the existing Sartre-MP family (claims#h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture live; claims#faire-etre-vs-faire-exister-as-mp-sartre-axis candidate; this claim's siblings claims#mp-silent-marxist-temptation and claims#bn-freedom-not-applicable-to-historical-man), this is the earliest dating-anchor, complementing the 1947 political anchor and the 1961 retraction-anchor.
