Claim

Plato presents the ideal city in a deliberately staged sequence across three linked dialogues, mirroring the Form→instance relation. The Republic gives the kallipolis as a theoretical construction ("in speech"). The Timaeus grounds it cosmically — the making of the world-order and of human nature, whose "paragon specimens" are the Athenians of the ancient war. The Critias then purports to show the city in action — primeval Athens, governed by the Republic's institutions (guardian caste, property-communism, female guardians; "the guardians… discussed yesterday," 110d), at war with Atlantis. The kallipolis stands to ancient Athens as a paradigm to its temporal realization — the way, in the same trilogy-frame, the Timaeus' eternal model stands to the generated cosmos it copies.

Evidence

  • plato-critias — the explicit program (106a–108c: the Republic-city must be seen "fully in effect… in a city's actual life, especially in wartime"); the Republic-institutions instantiated (110b–112e); the cross-reference "all of the activities… spoken of yesterday, when the guardians… were discussed" (110d). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-critias.md).
  • plato-timaeus — the cosmos as a made eikōn of an eternal model; the Athenians as paragon humanity; the hand-off to Critias (106a). Extraction-anchored; source-homed theory-of-forms, khora.
  • plato-republic — the kallipolis "in speech" (the page's existing form-of-the-good / tripartite-soul source).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Unfinished: the Critias breaks off mid-sentence (121c) before the war it promised — so the city is never actually shown in the action (wartime) that was the whole point of the enactment.
  • Enactment by fiat: Critias supposes ancient Athens was the kallipolis (110c–d); nothing in the narrative derives the institutions from the city's functioning — the mythic-historical frame does the work a demonstration would.
  • Only the institutional layer: what is "realized" is the political-institutional Republic (guardian caste, communism of property, women guardians), NOT its metaphysics — the philosopher-rulers, the Form of the Good, and the tripartite-soul psychology are conspicuously absent. "The Republic in action" is the politics minus the philosophy.
  • Reading Republic→Timaeus→Critias as one argued movement imposes more unity than three texts (one unfinished, the dramatic-frame order aside) secure; Cooper's anti-developmentalism resists a fixed sequence.

Payoff

Reads three dialogues usually treated separately (a political treatise, a cosmology, an unfinished fragment) as one staged demonstration of the paradigm/instance relation — and names precisely what the demonstration omits (the Republic's metaphysical core), so "the Republic enacted" is legible as a deliberately partial enactment, not a triumph. Visible only by reading the trilogy-frame as Plato built it.

Status History

  • 2026-06-22 — created at candidate (ingest Wave 6). Contestable (unfinished; enactment-by-stipulation; institutional-not-metaphysical; frame-sequence vs argued-movement); three extraction/source anchors. Likely passes the 3-test live gate; held at candidate per ingest-time conservatism, flagged for Phase 8.
  • 2026-06-23 — promoted candidate→live in audit v1.9 Phase 8: cleared the 3-test gate with ≥2 anchored evidence bullets from ≥2 distinct dialogue sources (independently reviewer-verified against extraction notes); maintainer-authorized cap-exceed for the Plato cohort.
