"More Einsteinian than Einstein" — perceptual-faith grounding of scientific rationality

ID: more-einsteinian-than-einstein-perceptual-grounding-of-reason Title: "More Einsteinian than Einstein" — perceptual-faith grounding of scientific rationality Status: candidate Confidence: speculative Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-27 Updated: 2026-06-27 Sources: merleau-ponty-1964-signs Wiki homes: perceptual-faith, action-at-a-distance

Claim

"Einstein and the Crisis of Reason" (1956) endorses Bergson's "we must be more Einsteinian than Einstein": relativity is reconciled with "all men's reasoning" only if rationality is re-founded not on a science's "divine right" but on "that reason prior to reason which is implicated in our existence, in our commerce with the perceived world and with others." Einstein's classicism (the "little finger") is the limit case this perceptual-faith grounding surpasses — scientific rationality, not just perception, is grounded in perceptual evidence.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

The "reason prior to reason" grounding is MP's own perceptual-faith doctrine read into the 1922 Bergson–Einstein exchange; a reviewer could object that MP uses the meeting as an occasion to restate his own thesis rather than reporting a result internal to the physics debate, and that the essay is a compact commemorative piece (the source-page §Critique flags the centenary-essay compression), risking collapse into the existing perceptual-faith genealogy without distinct payoff. False-friend adjacency (note, do not merge): shares-mechanism-with the live claim wild-being-extends-to-physics — both push wild/perceptual grounding into physics, but this claim is about grounding scientific rationality in perceptual faith, a distinct thesis from wild-being's ontological extension; keep separate.

Payoff

Gives the wiki an MP-published locus where scientific rationality (not just perception) is explicitly grounded in "reason prior to reason," a physics-of-relativity anchor for perceptual-faith and a third register (after politics and sociology) of the non-foundational "action at a distance" between philosophy and an empirical discipline.

Status History

  • 2026-06-27 — created at candidate via OPS-001 non-Plato Phase-8 harvest walk (stranded extraction-note Pass-3 Part D flag D.6 registered). Single-source (single commemorative essay) → candidate-floor; live blocked pending a second source carrying the perceptual-grounding-of-physics thesis distinctly from the perceptual-faith genealogy (would benefit from pairing with science-secretes-ontology-non-foundational-reciprocity as two instances of one science-facing maxim).
