Bergson's nothingness-as-pseudo-idea is a fourth position on the status of the negative — the lone dissolver

ID: bergson-fourth-corner-status-of-the-negative Title: Bergson's nothingness-as-pseudo-idea is a fourth position on the status of the negative — the lone dissolver Status: candidate Confidence: low Claim type: problem-space Created: 2026-06-07 Updated: 2026-06-07 Sources: bergson-1907-creative-evolution, hegel-1832-wdl-sein, merleau-ponty-2003-nature Wiki homes: nothingness-as-pseudo-idea, being-nothing-becoming

Claim

The ontological status of the negative recurs across the corpus under four treatments: Hegel makes pure Nichts a generative dialectical moment (its passing with Sein is Werden); Sartre makes néant the structure of the for-itself; MP seeks "something at the jointure of Being and Nothingness" (refusing both Bergson's positivism and Sartre's negativism); and Bergson is the outlier fourth corner — the idea of absolute Nothing "is at root the idea of Everything," a pseudo-idea to be dissolved. The shared axis: Bergson alone denies the negative any work the other three assign it. (A problem-space seed, not yet a settled four-answers-to-one-question thesis — see Counterpressure.)

Evidence

  • bergson-1907-creative-evolution — CE Ch. IV/III: "the idea of Nothing is at root the idea of Everything" (EC 295); "abolishing means substituting" (EC 282) — Nothing/disorder/the-possible as pseudo-ideas to dissolve.
  • hegel-1832-wdl-sein — "Das reine Seyn und das reine Nichts ist dasselbe"; Werden as their truth — Nothing as generative engine.
  • merleau-ponty-2003-nature / MP "The Ideas of Bergson" — "we must find something at the jointure of Being and Nothingness"; Bergson "incorporates Nothingness into Being," positivism "a repression of vertigo."
  • Sartre corner (néant as "avidity of Being") reaches the claim only via MP's characterization; no Being and Nothingness in raw/. Distinct source count = 3 independently-anchored corners (Sartre MP-mediated).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The unifying verb is contested by its own corner (strongest). MP denies Bergson cleanly dissolves the negative — Bergson "does not elude the idea of Nothingness" but incorporates it; his positivism is "a repression of vertigo." So "Bergson dissolves the Nothing the other three put to work" is opposed from inside the matrix.
  • Equivocation on the explanandum. Hegel's pure Nichts (a categorial beginning-moment) and Bergson's absolute void ("why is there something rather than nothing") may be different questions — "four corners on one question" partly an artifact of juxtaposition. Survives only as a problem-space (recurrence under different vocabularies), not four answers.
  • Sartre corner is MP-mediated (a gloss, not a source); the four-way geometry has only 3 independently-sourced corners. The ingest's own Pass-3 verdict: "more likely a Positions/false-friend cluster than a single claim."
  • Consistent with (not duplicating) the existing false-friend caution Bergsonian becoming ≠ Hegelian Werden — this claim is its positive synthetic statement, with that divergence absorbed as one cell.

Payoff

Names a shared axis (status of the negative) and locates Bergson as the sole dissolver — which explains why MP's "jointure" is a deliberate third way between Bergson and Sartre. Seeds a future status-of-the-negative problem-space page once a Sartre primary lands.

Status History

  • 2026-06-07 — created at candidate (audit Phase 8 Batch 8b; held at candidate, NOT live, despite the 3-test passing on the letter). Reasons: the unifying "dissolves" verb is contested by the MP corner itself; the Sartre corner is MP-mediated (3 independently-sourced corners, not 4); the ingest Pass-3 doubted it is a single claim vs a Positions cluster. Slug framed on the status of the negative axis (off "becoming" — avoids collision with being-nothing-becoming and the duréeWerden caution). Promotion to live would need reformulation as a problem-space + a Sartre primary (a Rule-18 check of B&N on néant).
