Claim

The ontological status of the negative recurs across the corpus under four treatments: Hegel makes pure Nichts a generative dialectical moment (its passing with Sein is Werden); Sartre makes néant the structure of the for-itself; MP seeks "something at the jointure of Being and Nothingness" (refusing both Bergson's positivism and Sartre's negativism); and Bergson is the outlier fourth corner — the idea of absolute Nothing "is at root the idea of Everything," a pseudo-idea to be dissolved. The shared axis: Bergson alone denies the negative any work the other three assign it. (A problem-space seed, not yet a settled four-answers-to-one-question thesis — see Counterpressure.)

Counterpressure / Limits

The unifying verb is contested by its own corner (strongest). MP denies Bergson cleanly dissolves the negative — Bergson "does not elude the idea of Nothingness" but incorporates it; his positivism is "a repression of vertigo." So "Bergson dissolves the Nothing the other three put to work" is opposed from inside the matrix.
Equivocation on the explanandum. Hegel's pure Nichts (a categorial beginning-moment) and Bergson's absolute void ("why is there something rather than nothing") may be different questions — "four corners on one question" partly an artifact of juxtaposition. Survives only as a problem-space (recurrence under different vocabularies), not four answers.
Sartre corner is MP-mediated (a gloss, not a source); the four-way geometry has only 3 independently-sourced corners. The ingest's own Pass-3 verdict: "more likely a Positions/false-friend cluster than a single claim."
Consistent with (not duplicating) the existing false-friend caution Bergsonian becoming ≠ Hegelian Werden — this claim is its positive synthetic statement, with that divergence absorbed as one cell.

The claim's organizing axis — "Bergson alone denies the negative any work the other three assign it," the "outlier fourth corner" / "lone dissolver" — is a re-sorting that the corpus's only text which actually assembles the corners (MP's "The Ideas of Bergson," Nature course 1956–57, cited in claims#bergson-fourth-corner-status-of-the-negative Evidence bullet 3) explicitly refuses. A live rival, better anchored than the claim's own axis, survives on three legs, and the entry's Counterpressure states only a weak version of leg 1 and defeats none of them: 1. MP's stated thesis about Bergson is incorporation, not dissolution — and he converts Bergson's positivism into a negativism. "The true meaning of Bergsonian philosophy is not so much to eliminate the idea of Nothingness as to incorporate it into the idea of being" (raw/Creative Evolution -- Henri Bergson, Donald Landes, Elizabeth Grosz (optimized).md line 2956, §The Idea of Nothingness). Two paragraphs earlier: "Radical positivism is in the end a radical negativism, since the two orders succeed one another without order, each being bound to the other by its own negation" (same file, line 2948), and MP's verdict on Bergson's Nature: "We must admit the idea of an operating negation in Nature, an idea without which this notion bursts" (line 2952); cf. line 2950 (absence "has an objective signification" that Bergson cannot register). In the parallel Nature-course text: Bergson's enduring Absolute "is to posit a being that 'hesitates,' which cannot do everything at once, which places the negative in its being" — "If Bergson blames Spinoza, he cannot be a positivist" (raw/Merleau-Ponty_Séglard_2003_Nature_course_notes.md line 1069). Under the rival, Bergson is not the corner where the negative does no work; he is the corner where it works unavowedly. Counterpressure bullet 1 records the "incorporates"/"repression of vertigo" phrases but stops at "MP denies Bergson cleanly dissolves the negative" — a hedge, not an answer, and it omits the positivism→negativism conversion entirely. 2. On MP's own sorting axis the partition is 2+2, not 3+1 — and Bergson is paired with Sartre, not opposed to everyone. On that axis Bergson+Sartre occupy one corner (the two symmetrical refusals of mixture) and Hegel — whose Sein/Nichts mutual passing is a mixture, and who enters MP's text only as the target of Sartre's B&N ch. 3 critique — falls on MP's side, not opposite Bergson. The claim's geometry (Bergson alone vs. Hegel/Sartre/MP) inverts the only attested grouping. 3. The Hegel pole is deflatable on the claim's own quotation. The Evidence bullet 2 anchor, "Das reine Seyn und das reine Nichts ist dasselbe," is itself the thesis that pure Nichts has no content distinguishable from Being — structurally the same move as Bergson's "the idea of Nothing is at root the idea of Everything" (EC 295, Evidence bullet 1): both hold that the attempt to think pure Nothing yields plenitude. The difference lies in what each does after the collapse (Hegel reads it as Werden; Bergson reads the question as malformed), so "dissolver vs. generative engine" compares Hegel's result with Bergson's verdict. Gate consequence. The entry's own Status History fixes the bar for this promotion: "Promotion to live would need reformulation as a problem-space + a Sartre primary (a Rule-18 check of B&N on néant)." Neither condition is met — the body is unrevised (Updated: 2026-06-07), the Claim field still self-describes as "A problem-space seed, not yet a settled four-answers-to-one-question thesis," and there is no Being and Nothingness in raw/ and no B&N source page in wiki/sources/ (only sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant), so the Sartre corner remains MP-mediated — from the same MP text whose sorting axis contradicts the claim. Promoting to live would license provisional citation of the "fourth corner" framing already asserted unhedged in wiki/concepts/nothingness-as-pseudo-idea.md §Stakes and in wiki/concepts/being-nothing-becoming.md Connections, hardening a partition MP's Note denies. Hold at candidate until the claim is restated on an axis its own sources support (e.g. mixture-of-Being-and-Nothingness allowed/refused, on which Bergson is not the outlier) or until a Sartre primary makes a non-MP-mediated four-way geometry checkable.
