Hegel WdL Three-Volume Ingest — Remaining Out-of-Reach Report

Date: 2026-05-21 Ingest: hegel-1832-wdl-sein, hegel-1813-wdl-objektive-logik, hegel-1816-wdl-begriff (the three volumes of the Wissenschaft der Logik) Status: wip: commit — partial completion authorized by user

This report enumerates what was not reached in the 2026-05-21 WdL three-volume ingest, so that follow-up sessions can complete the work. The user authorized partial completion in their original request: "be honest if this is unfeasible and what remained out of reach, then we can do a second or third pass if needed."

What WAS Achieved This Session

Extraction notes (3, full Pass 2 + Pass 3)

All three extraction notes are complete and load-bearing artifacts persisted at the standard .extraction-*.md location:

  • wiki/sources/.extraction-hegel-1832-wdl-sein.md — ~5,400 words, 27 arguments, 17 primary + 11 secondary concepts, 11 motifs, ~30 evidence quotes. Pass 3 (Diagnostics / Motif scan / Silent Keys / Claim Candidates) appended by main thread.
  • wiki/sources/.extraction-hegel-1813-wdl-objektive-logik.md — ~5,800 words, 24 arguments, 22 primary + 12 secondary concepts, ~13 motifs, comprehensive Pass 3.
  • wiki/sources/.extraction-hegel-1816-wdl-begriff.md — ~5,400 words, 17 arguments, 19 primary + 11 secondary concepts, ~13 motifs, comprehensive Pass 3.

Subagent execution: three parallel extraction-pass2-delegate subagents (Opus 4.7 [1m] each), one per volume. Total subagent runtime ~8 minutes (parallel). Main-thread Pass 3 append took an additional ~10 minutes.

Source pages (3, comprehensive)

  • hegel-1832-wdl-sein — ~3,000 words, full Source-Page schema with frontmatter, Core Arguments (12), Argumentative Movement, Key Findings, Concepts Developed (10), Concepts Referenced, Terminology table, Key Passages (10+), What's Not Obvious (3 with required passage-reference and wiki-page-link), Critique, Connections.
  • hegel-1813-wdl-objektive-logik — ~3,200 words, same schema; double-volume coverage (1812 Book 1 + 1813 Book 2) with priority on the unique 1813 Wesen-content.
  • hegel-1816-wdl-begriff — ~2,900 words, same schema.

Concept pages (10, priority concepts)

Page updates (3)

Index / log / overview / counts

  • wiki/index.md — sources entries inserted alphabetically; concept entries appended at end of Concepts section, not strictly alphabetical (deliberate session-efficiency trade-off; flag for follow-up lint pass).
  • wiki/log.md — append-only entry added.
  • wiki/overview.md — stats bumped to 529 pages (+13).

What was NOT Reached This Session

The concept pages I wrote contain many wikilinks to concepts that don't yet exist. Per CLAUDE.md ("If a target doesn't exist yet, still create the link — lint detects it as a stub"), these are deliberate dead-stub links. The follow-up sessions should create these:

From hegel-1832-wdl-sein and being-nothing-becoming:

  • bestimmtheit-quartet (Bestimmtheit / Bestimmung / Beschaffenheit / Grenze) — the determinacy quartet of Daseyn-section.
  • schlechte-vs-wahre-unendlichkeit (bad vs. true infinity) — the central distinction of the Endlichkeit-Unendlichkeit chapter.
  • fuersichseyn (Fürsichseyn / being-for-self) — the third chapter of Sein-section.
  • quantitaet-hegel (Quantity) — sublated Qualität, the second Abschnitt.
  • mass-hegel (Maß / measure) — the third Abschnitt; categorial unity of quality and quantity.
  • knotenlinie (nodal line of measure-relations) — Hegel's signature claim about qualitative jumps.
  • bestimmte-negation (determined negation) — engine of dialectic; Einleitung raw 898 is locus classicus.
  • wahlverwandschaft (chemical elective affinity) — the Berthollet-Berzelius dispute in the Maß-section.

From wesen-hegel and reflexion-hegel (GW 11):

  • schein-hegel (Schein / semblance) — "der Schein ist das eigene Setzen des Wesens."
  • reflexionsbestimmungen (the four reflection-determinations of difference).
  • identitaet-hegel, verschiedenheit-hegel, gegensatz-hegel — the first three of the four reflection-determinations.
  • setzen-voraussetzen (positing and presupposing as one absolute Gegenstoß).
  • grund-hegel (Ground / sufficient reason) — Reflexionsbestimmung that immediately marks itself as aufgehoben.
  • bedingung-sache (Bedingung / die Sache selbst) — emergence of Existenz from Grund.
  • existenz-hegel (Existenz) — mediated immediacy from Grund.
  • erscheinung-hegel (Erscheinung / Appearance) — the second Abschnitt of Wesen.
  • gesetz-der-erscheinung (Law of Appearance) — the ruhiges Abbild.
  • verkehrte-welt (inverted world) — Hegel's own cross-reference to Phen. p. 96.
  • wesentliches-verhaeltnis (essential relation: Ganzes/Theile, Kraft/Äußerung, Inneres/Äußeres).
  • wirklichkeit (Actuality) — "Was wirklich ist, kann wirken."
  • modal-triad-hegel (Wirklichkeit / Möglichkeit / Notwendigkeit).
  • substanz-hegel (Substance) — Hegel's Spinoza-engagement at Modus-Anmerkung raw 5951.
  • wechselwirkung (reciprocal action) — closing of the Doctrine of Essence; self-cancellation of substance.
  • blind-vs-manifested-necessity — "die Nothwendigkeit wird nicht dadurch zur Freyheit, daß sie verschwindet, sondern daß nur ihre noch innre Identität manifestirt wird" (raw 6395).

From begriff-hegel and absolute-idee (GW 12):

  • allgemein-besonderes-einzelnes (Universal / Particular / Individual) — the three moments of the Concept.
  • ur-theilung (Hegel's etymological move on judgment).
  • urtheil-hegel (Judgment) — the four-type ladder.
  • unendliches-urtheil (infinite judgment) — "the rose is not an elephant"; crime as real infinite judgment.
  • schluss-hegel (Syllogism) — "everything rational is a syllogism."
  • objectivitaet (Objectivity) — Mechanismus / Chemismus / Teleologie as logical categories.
  • teleology-hegel (Hegel's teleology) — against Kant's regulative restriction.
  • idee-hegel (the Idea) — three shapes: Leben / Erkennen / absolute Idee.
  • leben-hegel-logic (Life as logical category, not biological).
  • schmerz-als-vorrecht (Pain as privilege of the living) — GW 12 p. 194.
  • erkennen-hegel (Cognition) — theoretical and practical Idea.
  • wahre-widerlegung (true refutation — must enter the opponent's strength) — GW 12 p. 16.
  • centralitaet (absolute mechanism) — Sun/planets and government/citizens/needs.
  • freedom-hegel (Hegel's freedom — truth of necessity).
  • transcendental-apperception — Kant's deepest insight, criticized for psychologistic retreat.

Some of these stubs may end up as subsections on existing pages rather than dedicated pages (per CLAUDE.md's "When to add a section instead" guidance), but each needs at minimum a stub-resolution decision.

(ii) New entity pages (4-6 needed)

Hegel engages all of these extensively, but the wiki currently has entity pages only for Kant, Schelling, Parmenides.

  • baruch-spinoza — HIGH PRIORITY. Hegel's most-extended Spinoza-critique is at GW 11 raw 5951 (the Modus-Anmerkung). Plus: the Daseyn-Anmerkung at GW 21 raw 1801 (omnis determinatio est negatio as "von unendlicher Wichtigkeit"); the Indifferenz-section at the close of Maß; the Begriff-section's wahre Widerlegung of Spinozism at GW 12 pp. 13–16. Spinoza is the single most-referenced philosopher in the WdL after Kant.
  • aristotle — HIGH PRIORITY. Cited in all three WdL volumes: the categories tradition (Einleitungen), syllogistic praise-then-critique in GW 12 pp. 35–36, 109 ("ein unendliches Verdienst" but only "naturhistorische Beschreibung"), the Aristoteles-im-73ten-Jahre Satz-vs-Urtheil example at GW 12 p. 63, the substance/accident/cause tradition throughout. Plus appears in the wiki's existing engagement with Heidegger.
  • leibniz — Satz vom Grunde (PSR), monadology, indiscernibles, infinitesimal calculus. WdL engages at GW 21 raw ~2440–2842 (Monad-Anmerkung in Fürsichseyn), GW 11 raw 4958 (PSR), 4708 (Indiscernibles), 5977 (Monad), GW 12 pp. 141–142 (Monad as flawed Reflexion), p. 215 (calculus).
  • fichte — the Ich as Anfang critique (GW 21 raw 1183–1207); the unendlicher Anstoß as form of Idealismus that fails to reach Schein (GW 11 raw 4357); implicit throughout the Concept-volume's Spinoza-engagement.
  • jacobi — unmittelbares Wissen / Glaubensphilosophie; appears in Vorrede and at GW 11 raw 5298–5302 (Wesen Gottes as Abgrund); GW 12 p. 235.
  • wolff — the Schullogik / Schulmetaphysik foil; GW 21 Vorrede 1831 raw 496; the Anfangsgründe der Baukunst and Fortification theorems quoted in extenso in the GW 12 footnote pp. 234–235.

Aristotle and Spinoza are the most critical — both pre-1900 figures Hegel engages directly and who appear in the wiki's existing Heidegger and MP coverage.

(iii) Existing concept pages that would benefit from WdL primary-source updates (~10)

These pages currently reference Hegel without WdL primary anchoring. Each should be updated to incorporate the relevant WdL passages:

  • philosophy-of-reflection — should now cite GW 11 (the Reflexion-section) as its uniquely authoritative source.
  • hyper-dialectic (MP) — MP's "dialectic without synthesis" is a response to Hegelian dialectic; the WdL ingest now anchors what synthesis means for Hegel (Aufheben as cancel-preserve; freie Entlassung as closure non-transition).
  • master-slave-dialectic — the WdL doesn't repeat this Phenomenology passage but the Wesen-section's productive-contradiction doctrine is the categorial form of what the master-slave dialectic phenomenologically exemplifies.
  • propaedeutic-dialectic — the Phenomenology-Logic relation is now textually anchorable via the 1812 Vorrede's "System der Wissenschaft" framing (GW 11 raw 660) and the GW 11 verkehrte Welt cross-reference to Phen. p. 96 (raw 5625).
  • redoubled-negation — the WdL's bestimmte Negation doctrine (GW 11 Einleitung raw 985, GW 21 Einleitung raw 898) is the canonical articulation.
  • concrete-mediation — the Concept's self-mediation in GW 12 is the systematic form.
  • recognition-and-institution — the political-mechanism analogy at GW 12 p. 152 is a structural pre-figuration relevant to MP's reception of Hegelian recognition.
  • absolute-knowing — should cross-reference absolute-idee (Phenomenology's terminus and Logic's terminus are structurally related but not identical).
  • antigone-hegel — the Wesen-section's productive-contradiction doctrine illuminates Antigone's "ethical action is constitutively guilty" structure.
  • dialectic — the wiki's central dialectic page should now incorporate WdL primary-source anchoring.

(iv) motifs.md not updated

The 2026-05-21 WdL ingest surfaces several HUB-candidates that should be added to motifs.md:

  • Aufheben — confirmed HUB at corpus level (all three WdL volumes + Phenomenology + Phenomenology's "labor of the negative" motif).
  • Bestimmte Negation — HUB candidate (engine of dialectic).
  • Widerspruch — HUB candidate (Reflexionsbestimmungen + Schmerz + Wechselwirkung).
  • der Begriff — the central category of GW 12.
  • Allgemein / Besonderes / Einzelnes — the structuring rhythm of every triad in GW 12.
  • Reflexion — engine of GW 11.
  • Schein — Wesen-section.
  • Grund — the Reflexionsbestimmung that marks itself as already aufgehoben.
  • an sich / für sich / an und für sich — the modal triad operative across all volumes.
  • schlechte vs. wahre Unendlichkeit — the signature distinction of the Endlichkeit-section.

A motifs.md sweep should add or update entries for each.

(v) Audit Phase 8 — 9 candidate claims deferred

Three Pass-3 claim candidates per volume (9 total), flagged in the extraction notes but not promoted to claims.md this session. These should be processed in the next audit Phase 8:

GW 21: (a) 1812-vs-1832 textual layering = three-Hegels framing; (b) Hegel-on-calculus as qualitative-not-arithmetical; (c) German-uniquely-speculative-Sprache doctrine. GW 11: (a) GW 11 as uniquely canonical for Doctrine of Essence; (b) verkehrte-Welt cross-reference as Hegel's own bridge from 1813 Logic to 1807 Phen.; (c) Causality-not-applicable-to-spirit (anti-historicist anchor). GW 12: (a) Political-mechanism analogy (GW 12 p. 152) pre-figures Philosophy of Right architectonic; (b) Hegel's Begriff not equatable with Kantian or Fregean concept; (c) Freie Entlassung as non-transition distinguishing Hegel from emanation.

(vi) Cross-source weaving — partial only

  • Kant: each WdL volume engages Kant extensively. The wiki's existing immanuel-kant entity page should be updated with the WdL Anmerkungen (transcendental apperception at GW 12 pp. 17–28; antinomies at GW 21 Quantum-section and GW 11 raw 1001; ontological-proof / 100-Thaler at GW 21 raw 1392 / GW 11 raw 1262; teleology at GW 12 pp. 162–166; arithmetic at GW 12 p. 213).
  • Heidegger 1964: the heidegger-1964-end-of-philosophy source page's reading of Hegel's Wahrheit des Seins in the Logic (GA 14 p. 86) is now directly anchorable to GW 12's absolute-idee chapter. A targeted update to heidegger-1964-end-of-philosophy linking to freie-entlassung would tighten the Wahrheit-als-Gewißheit diagnostic.
  • MP: hyper-dialectic and merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic should cite the WdL passages MP's reading depends on (the Aufheben doctrine, the absolute-Idea closure).
  • Schelling: the WdL's polemic against "modern Construiren" (GW 12 p. 254) is widely read as targeting Schelling. The friedrich-schelling entity page should incorporate this.

(vii) .audit/synthetic-layer-* follow-up

No audit synthetic-layer report was generated for the WdL ingest. The standard procedure is for audit Phase 8 to process the claim-candidate pool; the 9 candidates above seed that pool.

  1. Pass 2 (next session): create the 4-6 missing entity pages (Spinoza, Aristotle as high priority; Leibniz, Fichte, Jacobi, Wolff as medium). Each ~800-1500 words; should anchor to specific WdL Anmerkungen + cross-source recurrence.

  2. Pass 3 (separate session): create the ~30 missing concept pages. Group by category — Sein-section concepts (Bestimmtheit, Endlichkeit, Unendlichkeit, Quantität, Maß, Knotenlinie, Aufheben-of-Werden); Wesen-section concepts (Schein, Reflexionsbestimmungen, Grund, Erscheinung, Wirklichkeit, Substanz-Causalität-Wechselwirkung); Begriff-section concepts (Allgemein-Besonderes-Einzelnes, Urteil-types, Schluss-types, Objektivität, Idee, Leben, Erkennen). Some may end up as subsections on existing pages rather than dedicated pages.

  3. Pass 4 (separate session): motifs.md sweep — add new HUB-candidates with proper cross-source aggregation. Update existing motifs (labor of the negative, substance becomes subject, die Sache selbst, Anerkennung) with WdL-anchoring where relevant.

  4. Pass 5 (audit Phase 8): promote the 9 flagged claim candidates per the standard Phase 8 procedure. Some may go candidate→live immediately (1812-vs-1832 textual layering is strongly textually supported); others may need cross-source verification (causality-not-applicable-to-spirit may need Hegel-internal cross-reference to Philosophy of History).

  5. Pass 6 (cross-source weaving): update immanuel-kant entity page, friedrich-schelling entity page, heidegger-1964-end-of-philosophy source page, MP-Hegel-engaging pages with WdL primary-source anchoring.

  6. Pass 7 (lint cleanup): re-sort the index Concepts section alphabetically; resolve any stub-wikilinks that lint flags; verify motifs.md / claims.md / index.md integrity.

The user explicitly authorized 2nd and 3rd passes. The wiki state after the 2026-05-21 wip: commit is production-quality on what was reached; the deferred items are high-value follow-up, not broken pieces of this commit.

Note on Subagent Architecture

The three-parallel-subagent approach (Opus 4.7 [1m] each) worked exactly as designed for Pass 2. Each subagent:

  • Read its assigned raw file (1.0-1.4 MB)
  • Chunked internally into 4 sections
  • Produced a 5,400-5,800 word extraction note matching the SKILL.md schema
  • Returned only a ≤200-word summary to the main thread (no extraction-note content paste — context economy maintained)
  • Completed in ~7-8 minutes parallel

This architecture is recommended for any future multi-volume Hegelian / German-Idealist ingest (Encyclopedia three parts; Schelling's Philosophie der Mythologie / Philosophie der Offenbarung multi-volume lectures; Kant's three Critiques together). The bottleneck was main-thread synthesis (Pass 3, source pages, concept pages), not Pass 2.
