Alberto Giacometti
Swiss sculptor and painter (1901–1966). In "Eye and Mind", Giacometti provides two key formulations for MP's argument:
-
On depth: "I believe Cézanne was seeking depth all his life" (§4, via Charbonnier, Le monologue du peintre, p. 176) — placing Cézanne's entire project under the sign of depth-profondeur.
-
On resemblance: "What interests me in all paintings is resemblance — that is, what is resemblance for me: something which makes me discover more of the world" (§2, via Charbonnier, p. 172). MP uses this to redefine the image: resemblance is not correspondence between copy and original but the power of the painting to open more of the world.
