A pre-linguistic universality of feeling grounds first speech, pre-ontologically

ID: universality-of-feeling-grounds-first-speech-pre-ontologically Title: A pre-linguistic universality of feeling grounds first speech, pre-ontologically Status: candidate Confidence: speculative Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-27 Updated: 2026-06-27 Sources: merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world Wiki homes: intercorporeity, primordial-expression

Claim

Prose of the World ch.5 grounds the possibility of language itself in a pre-linguistic "universality of feeling" — the corporeal generality whereby my perceived world already "trails with it my corporeality" and is therefore open to any other embodied perceiver — so that first speech does not create communication but takes root in a mute, already-common sensible world. Intercorporeity is the condition of language, not its product, and is secured pre-ontologically, before the later vocabularies of flesh and chiasm.

Evidence

  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — extraction note args. #9–10 + Pass-2c; raw l. 1547 ("There is a universality of feeling—and it is upon this that our identification rests, the generalization of my body, the perception of the other… the world I perceive still trails with it my corporeality").
  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — raw l. 827 ("the principle of communication had already been given in the fact that man perceives another man in the world… The first speech was not established in a world without communication, since it emerged from forms of conduct that were already common and took root in a sensible world which had already ceased to be a private world"); l. 1601 ("the private totality fraternizes with the social whole").

Counterpressure / Limits

The grounding is asserted at the level of "feeling" without the later structural account of reversibility/flesh that would explain how corporeal generality reaches the other — the source page flags exactly this. A critic could charge that "universality of feeling" names the explanandum rather than explaining it (cf. the Pass-3 "assumed without argument" diagnostic on the body's bridging capacity as a primitive). Distinct from the live claim dyadic-encounter-presupposes-institution (encounter presupposes institution, a different ground; re-anchored PoW→PhP 373 on 2026-06-27) and from gestural-expression-bridges-php-to-prose-of-world (body→expression within the expressive arts) — this claims corporeal generality grounds first speech / language as such.

Payoff

Names PW as the pre-ontological origin of MP's claim that intercorporeity precedes language; the wiki anticipates intercorporeity from PW but registers no claim that PW makes corporeal generality the condition of possibility of speech itself, reframing the late flesh-ontology as the eventual structural cashing-out of a 1950–52 functional thesis.
