Klossowski inverts the Platonic semantics of the simulacrum — being, not degraded copy

ID: simulacrum-as-being-not-copy Title: Klossowski inverts the Platonic semantics of the simulacrum — being, not degraded copy Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-07 Updated: 2026-06-07 Sources: klossowski-1969-nietzsche-vicious-circle Wiki homes: simulacrum

Claim

In Nietzsche and the Vicious Circle, Klossowski inverts the Platonic semantics of "simulacrum": it is not a degraded copy parasitic on a real original but the willed reproduction of a phantasm — the making-present of an impulsive intensity that has no other mode of appearance — under the thesis that "simulation is the attribute of being itself." Existence is sustained only through fabulation, so the simulacrum is the form fabulation takes, not a deficient image measured against a model. This semantic inversion (copy → being; abolition of the original/copy hierarchy) is the seed of the Deleuzian "overturning of Platonism."

Evidence

  • klossowski-1969-nietzsche-vicious-circle Translator's Preface §4 — the simulacrum as "a willed reproduction of a phantasm… that simulates this invisible agitation of the soul"; simulacrum glossed as the statues of the gods (making-present), not representation-of-a-prior-original. (Extraction note Pass 3 Part D #3; simulacrum "Why the word 'simulacrum'".)
  • klossowski-1969-nietzsche-vicious-circle Ch. 6 — "simulation is the attribute of being itself"; "the only being guaranteed to us is being that represents itself… non-identical to itself."
  • klossowski-1969-nietzsche-vicious-circle Ch. 10 (Note on Nietzsche's Semiotic) — the phantasm→simulacrum→language derivation; the phantasm reproduced is itself "without preconditions," not a model.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Single source; the genealogical payoff is not yet anchored. The Klossowski-internal reading is supported, but the downstream link ("seed of the Deleuzian overturning of Platonism") is asserted from the translator's framing + general knowledge. Cannot reach live until a Deleuze primary is ingested (Difference and Repetition "Plato and the Simulacrum"; Logic of Sense appendix). Single-source live promotions halt.
  • Over-extension risk. Detached from the impulse-theory that grounds it, "simulation is the attribute of being itself" collapses into generic anti-realism that Klossowski's concept does not license — keep it tied to the phantasm-born-of-impulsive-intensity grounding.
  • Rival reading. The simulacrum may still be parasitic on the phantasm as a quasi-original, softening the "no original" inversion (the page answers this — the phantasm is "without preconditions" — but the tension is live).

Payoff

Locates the pre-Deleuzian origin of the "overturning of Platonism" precisely: the copy→being inversion the wiki associates mainly with Deleuze/Baudrillard is already executed, as a determinate inversion of a determinate Platonic semantics, in Klossowski 1969 — the Klossowski-end of a future genealogical bridge.

Status History

  • 2026-06-07 — created at candidate (audit Phase 8 Batch 8b, from the Klossowski extraction note Pass 3 Part D #3). Single source; the interpretive core is textually anchored, the genealogical Deleuze-seed link awaits a Deleuze primary ingest before promotion to live.
