Two routes to the fine — the Hippias Major fails to define to kalon by elenchus, the Symposium reaches it by erotic ascent

Claim

One and the same object — to kalon, the fine/beautiful — is approached by Plato along two non-converging routes. The Hippias Major seeks "the fine itself" by definitional elenchus and fails, refuting every candidate (the appropriate, the useful, the beneficial, the pleasant-through-sight-and-hearing) and closing on "what's fine is hard" (304e). The Symposium reaches "the beautiful itself" — but by erotic ascent, grasped "all of a sudden" (210e–211b), not by definition. The pairing is a method-contrast on a single definiendum, structurally parallel to Plato's two epistemologies (division/collection vs. recollection/spark): where elenctic definition fails, a non-discursive route succeeds.

Evidence

  • plato-hippias-major — the form/instance demand on to kalon (287d–e) and the serial refutation to aporia (289a–304e); extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-hippias-major.md).
  • plato-symposium — the ascent to "the beautiful itself … always being" reached "all of a sudden" (210a–211d); extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-symposium.md), homed on eros.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The Hippias Major's authenticity is disputed; if it is not Plato's, the "two routes" are not securely his two routes.
  • The Symposium "reaches" the kalon in a mantic register Diotima herself disclaims (210e), so the "success" is qualified — vision, perhaps, not knowledge.
  • The two kalons may differ in kind: the Hippias Major seeks the evaluative fine (a property of speeches, lives, implements), the Symposium a separated metaphysical Beauty — so the shared word may mask a concept-shift, making "same object" an overreach.

Payoff

Reframes the Hippias Major's aporia as productive in the corpus economy: its definitional failure is the negative space the Symposium's ascent fills, just as the definitional dialogues' failure motivates the Forms. It generalizes the two-epistemologies pattern from knowledge to value — Plato repeatedly pairs a failed discursive route with a successful non-discursive one — visible only by reading the two kalon dialogues together.

Status History

  • 2026-06-22 — created at candidate (ingest Wave 5). Three mandatory disanalogies recorded (authenticity; mantic register; possible concept-shift); both legs extraction-anchored.
  • 2026-06-23 — promoted candidate→live in audit v1.9 Phase 8: cleared the 3-test gate with ≥2 anchored evidence bullets from ≥2 distinct dialogue sources (independently reviewer-verified against extraction notes); maintainer-authorized cap-exceed for the Plato cohort.
