The Euthydemus frames rhetoric, eristic, and logography as three knowledge-less counterfeits of logos — each parasitic on a different genuine art

Claim

The Euthydemus makes visible a topology of three counterfeits of reasoned speech, each a knowledge-less double of a genuine art: rhetoric (crowd-flattery — the sham of statecraft, per the Gorgias' grid), eristic (combative Q&A indifferent to truth — the sham of dialectic), and logography (the forensic speech-writer "in the no-man's-land between the philosopher and the statesman," 305c — Isocrates). The three share the form of logos and lack its knowledge-of-the-truth; distinguishing them de-homogenizes "the sophist" and locates rhetoric as one counterfeit among three rather than the sole foil to philosophy.

Evidence

  • plato-euthydemus — eristic exhibited throughout; the logographer between philosopher and statesman (305c); the contrast with fostering dialectic. Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-euthydemus.md).
  • plato-gorgias — rhetoric as a knack of flattery, "an image of a part of politics" (463d–465e). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-gorgias.md).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The "three counterfeits" is partly the maintainer's synthesis: the Euthydemus names the logographer and exhibits eristic, but does not present a tidy three-part taxonomy alongside rhetoric.
  • The three may not be parallel kinds: rhetoric and eristic are arts/knacks, while "logography" is a profession; the symmetry may be looser than "three doubles" suggests.

Payoff

Prevents reading rhetoric as Plato's only knowledge-less rival to philosophy, and gives eristic and rhetoric a shared frame: each is the truth-indifferent shadow of a different genuine art. A corpus-level observation no single dialogue states outright.
