Claim
Plato deploys distinct senses of "not-being" (to mē on) across four dialogues that the Sophist's heteron finally adjudicates: the Theaetetus poses the false-judgment aporia ("a man who is judging something which is not is judging nothing," 189a) and cannot solve it; the Parmenides leaves it antinomic (Deduction 5's qualified not-being that "somehow partakes of being" vs. Deduction 6's absolute not-being "in no state at all," 160b–164b); Republic V deploys a vertical degrees-of-being sense ("what is not" = the unknowable nothing; sensibles "are and are not," 476e–480a); and the Sophist's not-being-as-difference (the horizontal sense) refines the Republic's cruder ontology of becoming, reusing the Theaetetus's dianoia-as-inner-speech account at 263e.
Evidence
- plato-theaetetus — the false-judgment aporia (188c–189b); inner-speech doxa (189e–190a). Extraction-anchored (
.extraction-plato-theaetetus.md). - plato-parmenides — the qualified/absolute not-being of Deductions 5–6 (160b–164b). Extraction-anchored.
- plato-republic — the vertical "what is not = nothing" / sensibles "are and are not" (476e–480a). Extraction-anchored.
- plato-sophist — not-being-as-difference, the resolution (256d–259b); inner-speech reused at 263e.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The four "not-beings" may be heterogeneous problems sharing only the phrase to mē on — the existential/predicative/veridical senses of "is" are conflated (translator's note, Republic 477a), so a unified "spine" may overread a verbal coincidence.
- The narrative (poses → equivocates → deploys → resolves) imposes a chronology Cooper's anti-developmentalism resists: only the Sophist is stylometrically secure as late; the Theaetetus dates c. 369, the Parmenides and Republic are undated. The logical ordering need not be the compositional one.
- Distinct from claims#sophist-not-being-as-difference-vs-determinate-negation (which compares the Sophist to Hegel); this claim is intra-Plato.
Payoff
Makes the Sophist's "patricide of Parmenides" legible as the resolution of a corpus-wide problem rather than a local puzzle, and lets four dialogues be read as one research program on the possibility of falsehood and error — something invisible from any single dialogue page.
