The 1812-vs-1832 textual layering of the *Wissenschaft der Logik* forces the standard "two Hegels" framing into a "three Hegels" framing

ID: hegel-1812-vs-1832-three-hegels-textual-layering Title: The 1812-vs-1832 textual layering of the Wissenschaft der Logik forces the standard "two Hegels" framing into a "three Hegels" framing Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / textual-philological Created: 2026-05-21 Updated: 2026-05-21 Sources: hegel-1832-wdl-sein, hegel-1813-wdl-objektive-logik, hegel-1807-phenomenology-spirit Wiki homes: two-hegels-1807-1827, hegel-1832-wdl-sein, hegel-1813-wdl-objektive-logik

Claim

The standard "two Hegels" reading distinguishes the 1807 Phenomenology (early, dialectical, ambiguity-rich) from the post-1827 system (mature, systematic, closed). The WdL textual record forces a three-Hegels refinement: (1) 1807 Phen., (2) 1812–1816 original WdL (Book 1 Sein 1812, Book 2 Wesen 1813, Subjective Logic 1816), (3) 1831–32 revised WdL Book 1 (the only section Hegel substantially rewrote) plus the planned (uncompleted) Phen. revision per the 1831 marginal note. The 1812 and 1832 Sein-texts differ substantially; the long Anmerkungen on Spinoza, Buddhism, Heraclitus, and the calculus are largely 1831 additions; the 1812 Vorrede explicitly announces the Logic as part of "System der Wissenschaft" following the 1807 Phenomenology, while the 1831 Vorrede no longer makes this connection in the same way.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

The "three Hegels" framing depends on treating the unfinished 1831 revision-program as a distinct Hegel — but Hegel died in 1831 before completing the planned revisions; whether the 1831–32 layer constitutes a third Hegel or merely a late phase of the second is debatable. The standard "two Hegels" reading (1807 vs. mature system) can accommodate the WdL textual layering as internal phases of the mature system rather than as a third stage.

Payoff

If accepted, this gives the wiki's two-hegels-1807-1827 page a finer-grained framework for understanding Hegel's textual layers; it forces wiki claims about "late Hegel" to specify which late Hegel (1812–16 vs. 1831–32). It also gives the WdL ingest project a principled basis for reading the 1832 Anmerkungen as Hegel's late self-revisions, not as the original 1812 doctrine.

Status History

  • 2026-05-21 — created as candidate from GW 21 + GW 11 ingest. Reason: the textual evidence is well-documented (Hogemann/Jaeschke apparatus); the framing-question (two vs. three Hegels) is the contestable interpretive thesis. Promotion to live requires examination of the 1831 marginal note (already supported on the wiki) for cross-corroboration and of the Encyclopedia 1817/1827/1830 revisions.
  • 2026-05-21 (audit Phase 8) — PROMOTED candidate → live. Reason: 3-test gate passes cleanly (T1 contestable thesis; T2 anchored evidence at GW 21 raw 1322/1336/1350 + GW 11 raw 660 + 1831 marginal note already live; T3 articulated counterpressure about unfinished revision-program). Parallel claim hegel-1807-vs-1831-self-correction-abstract-absolute is already live and serves as cross-corroboration. See wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-21-wdl.md.
