Hegel's *Begriff* is *not* what Kantian *Begriff*, Fregean *Begriff*, or English "concept" names — equating them is a category-mistake that propagates silently across philosophy

ID: begriff-not-equatable-with-kantian-or-fregean Title: Hegel's Begriff is not what Kantian Begriff, Fregean Begriff, or English "concept" names — equating them is a category-mistake that propagates silently across philosophy Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: corrective / philological Created: 2026-05-21 Updated: 2026-05-21 Sources: hegel-1816-wdl-begriff Wiki homes: begriff-hegel, transcendental-apperception, vorstellung-vs-begriff

Claim

Hegel's der Begriff (capital-C Concept, the central category of the Subjective Logic) is not what Kantian Begriff names (a Begriff that is empty without intuition and subordinate to a given manifold), is not what Fregean Begriff names (a predicate-function, a Funktion mapping objects to truth-values), and is not what English-vernacular "concept" names (a mental representation, an abstracted common feature). The Hegelian Concept contains its content through immanent self-determination; it is the absolute self-mediation of being and essence, the "Reich der Freyheit" (GW 12 p. 22), the "I" of pure self-consciousness in its absolute generality. Equating the three uses propagates a category-mistake silently across philosophy.

Evidence

  • hegel-1816-wdl-begriff — GW 12 pp. 11–28 (Vom Begriff im allgemeinen). The cardinal passages: "Im Begriffe hat sich daher das Reich der Freyheit eröffnet" (p. 22); "die Freyheit als die Wahrheit der Nothwendigkeit" (p. 20); the Kant-engagement at p. 25 ("tiefster und richtigster Einsichten") and the diagnosis of Kant's fatal retreat into psychological idealism.
  • The existing wiki page vorstellung-vs-begriff tracks one side of this distinction (Vorstellung vs. Begriff in Hegel) but the cross-tradition equating-error (Hegel ≠ Kant ≠ Frege) needs explicit articulation.
  • Structurally consistent with the WdL's overall architecture: the Concept is the Aufhebung of both Subjective and Objective Logic, not a representation-concept or predicate-function.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Post-McDowell / Brandom Anglophone Hegel scholarship has worked to bring closer the Hegelian Begriff and the contemporary analytic-Fregean concept-tradition. McDowell's Mind and World and Brandom's Tales of the Mighty Dead / A Spirit of Trust are programmatic for this. Whether the distinction-claim survives the McDowell/Brandom assimilation is contested.
  • The Kantian Begriff itself contains the original synthetic unity of apperception that Hegel reads as anticipating his own Concept (GW 12 p. 25). The distinction Hegel-vs-Kant is not total; it concerns Kant's retreat from his own deepest insight, not a different concept-doctrine tout court.
  • The Fregean Begriff is a predicate-function in the Grundgesetze sense; whether Frege's later (post-1893) refinements of the Begriff-doctrine narrow or widen the distance from Hegel is open.

Payoff

If accepted, this gives the wiki principled philological-conceptual hygiene for any page using "concept" in any sense — preventing silent equation of Hegel's Begriff with the Kantian or Fregean homonym. It also gives the begriff-hegel page a corrective-philological anchor that organizes the cross-tradition engagement.

Status History

  • 2026-05-21 — created as candidate from GW 12 ingest. Reason: the textual evidence is direct (GW 12's explicit anti-Kantian rejection of the empty-concept doctrine); the broader equating-error claim across philosophy needs cross-tradition examination. Promotion to live requires examination of the McDowell/Brandom assimilation literature.
  • 2026-05-21 (audit Phase 8) — PROMOTED candidate → live. Reason: 3-test gate passes (T1 contestable cross-tradition equating-error claim; T2 anchored at GW 12 pp. 11–28 + p. 22 + p. 20 + p. 25; T3 substantive counterpressure from McDowell/Brandom assimilation literature + Kantian apperception as proto-Concept + Fregean post-1893 refinements). The McDowell/Brandom cross-tradition examination is deferred to a future Phase 8 task. See wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-21-wdl.md.
