Thesis-Coherence Decision Memo — 2026-05-05

This memo gates Phases 4–8 of the Full Audit v1.5 run. It does not edit any wiki page. It articulates the structural-contradiction question between H_synth (the live "science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm" claim) and δ (the supported "coherent-deformation-universal-operative-form" claim) so the user can adjudicate cleanly. The recommendation at §6 is one option among three; reasons the user might overrule it are stated.

Anchors: line numbers refer to the file paths shown. Quotation marks delimit verbatim claim/page text.

1. Question 1 — Does H_synth still stand as the operative thesis, or has δ become operative?

1.1 Direct evidence from claims.md

The H_synth claim is at claims.md:98–149 (science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm, status: live, confidence: medium). Its Counterpressure section was substantially expanded on 2026-05-01 with four findings drawn from the cross-text re-audit (questions/h-synth-reaudit-on-original-textual-basis). The closing sentence of the 2026-05-01 Status History entry (claims.md:149) reads — verbatim — :

"Status remains live provisionally; downgrade to candidate is warranted if the (δ) reformulation is not adopted soon, since the Claim as currently stated (mutual-conditioning grammar) is now textually under-supported on its own source texts. The supported-gate criterion 5 (confidence survives restatement against strongest counter-position) is now firmly blocked by the cross-text findings."

The δ claim is at claims.md:550–590 (coherent-deformation-universal-operative-form, status: supported, confidence: medium). Promoted 2026-05-04 under R8 user pre-authorization. Its Claim section (line 564) directly states:

"the three-element expressive cluster is MP's operative architectonic of expression, not the four-element chiasm-Stiftung joint operation H_synth posits."

The δ Counterpressure section explicitly characterizes the supported framing as targeting H_synth (claims.md:578):

"The corrective targets H_synth's framing in claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live, medium) — specifically that coherent deformation anchors 'the painterly-specific case' in the four-element synthesis."

H_synth's own Counterpressure (claims.md:127–137) records four findings against the mutual-conditioning grammar that constitutes its claim:

  • (1) two new science secrète attestations in PoP, with the V&I draft chapter site operative around Ineinander, not Stiftung (claims.md:129);
  • (2) "the four H_synth concepts are never co-deployed in a single argumentative gesture" in E&M, PoP, or Indirect Language (claims.md:131);
  • (3) coherent deformation is universal across painting and literature, contradicting H_synth's painter-side framing (claims.md:133);
  • (4) IL (1952) privileges language over painting, making E&M's (1961) painter-as-primary-witness reading a developmental change rather than a stable position (claims.md:135).

1.2 Evidence from concept pages — does the four-concept synthesis still co-deploy?

Across the named seed list, two distinct discursive layers coexist:

A. The H_synth four-concept synthesis is still spoken in the "joint operation" register on multiple concept pages:

  • science-secrete.md:144 — Positions section retains the H_synth gloss as Paper A's reading, but explicitly flags it as "under reformulation pressure 2026-05-01" and records (δ) as the recommended reformulation in the same bullet.
  • science-secrete.md:160 — Connections still types science-secrete as "enacts the joint operation of chiasm (synchronic) and stiftung (diachronic) — per Paper A's H_synth (see Positions)".
  • science-secrete.md:179 — Synthetic Claims still cites H_synth as "live claim, see ... — science secrète names the joint operation of Stiftung (diachronic) and chiasm (synchronic); painting is the exemplary enactment site. The thesis-central claim that grounds the H_synth four-element architecture."
  • science-secrete.md:98 — What the Concept Does §3 still states: "It holds together the four-element synthesis Paper A's H_synth thesis identifies — science secrète (the discipline-name) + coherent-deformation (the operative form) + chiasm (the synchronic intelligibility-condition) + stiftung (the diachronic mechanism)."
  • coherent-deformation.md:75 — What the Concept Does §3 retains the bridging gloss: "It bridges chiasm and stiftung at the level of expressive enactment ... This is why H_synth's reading of E&M can take painting as the exemplary site of indirect ontology: painting is not exemplifying chiasm or Stiftung alone but enacting their joint operation."
  • coherent-deformation.md:187 — Synthetic Claims bullet for H_synth: "Status remains live provisionally; the 2026-05-01 cross-text re-audit pressures the four-element joint-operation framing in favor of a three-tier expressive cluster (per the supported claim immediately below)."
  • chiasm.md:149,235,253 — three sites preserve the H_synth axis (joint-operation grammar, painter-as-exemplary-enactment, the live-claim citation).
  • stiftung.md:103,158 — Stakes section names the H_synth axis; Synthetic Claims cites H_synth.
  • institution.md:246 — Connections types institution as "the diachronic mechanism in which science-secrete is enacted ... Painting is the exemplary enactment site."
  • fundamental-thought-in-art.md:90,92,101,105,107,111,124,157 — eight separate joint-operation references; the page treats painting as the exemplary enactment of the joint operation in a sustained architectural register.
  • indirect-ontology.md:113,160,189 — three references treat the joint operation as what indirect ontology operates with, with science-secrete as its painterly enactment.
  • ineinander.md:66 — labels itself the "result-figure for the chiasmic-Stiftung joint operation".

B. The δ vocabulary is also already deployed:

  • coherent-deformation.md:86 — What It Rejects names "Painterly specificity" as a position the page now refuses, citing the supported δ claim explicitly. The page already articulates the three-tier expressive cluster reading at lines 134, 191.
  • science-secrete.md:144 — Positions section explicitly records (δ) as the "recommended reformulation" with the three-tier cluster spelled out and chiasm/Ineinander reframed as "coordinate-but-separable".
  • coherent-deformation.md:191 — Synthetic Claims includes the supported δ as the lead synthetic anchor for the page.

The two layers are textually overlaid, not yet integrated. The painter-side framing still does load-bearing work on science-secrete.md, chiasm.md, stiftung.md, institution.md, fundamental-thought-in-art.md, indirect-ontology.md, and ineinander.md. The δ reframing is recorded as a "recommended reformulation" on science-secrete.md and coherent-deformation.md but has not propagated to the other pages. This is the operational signature of an unresolved decision: the wiki is currently saying both "the four-element synthesis is the architecture" and "the three-tier expressive cluster is the architecture" in different sections.

1.3 The structural-contradiction question

Can H_synth and δ both be true?

The two claims contradict on three specific propositions:

Proposition H_synth (live, medium) δ (supported, medium)
What is the operative architecture? Four-concept synthesis: science secrète + coherent deformation + chiasm + Stiftung, in mutual-conditioning grammar (claims.md:112,143). Three-element expressive cluster: coherent deformation + Stiftung + système d'équivalences. Chiasm coordinate-but-separable (claims.md:564).
Where does coherent deformation anchor? The painterly-specific case in the four-element synthesis; the bridge "at the level of expressive enactment" between chiasm and Stiftung (coherent-deformation.md:75; H_synth Counterpressure: H_synth "structural placement of coherent deformation alongside science secrète (E&M's painter-side question) and the painting-as-exemplary-enactment framing make the painterly-specific reading the natural one" — claims.md:578). Universal across painting AND literature; "not painterly-specific". The IL raw 1050 "too" and "never otherwise" passages "empirically defeat" the painterly-specific reading (claims.md:564).
Is the joint-operation grammar of chiasm + Stiftung in MP's published text? Yes — anchored at the Nov 1960 V&I working note plus the four-concept architecture H_synth posits (claims.md:117). The published text shows three-element clusters that omit chiasm at IL raw 820–874 and PoP §IIb raw 597–641; the "decisive gesture H_synth posits — joint-operation grammar of chiasm + Stiftung — is not in MP's published text" (claims.md:131).

These are not soft pressures; they are structural contradictions about the same texts. δ does not displace H_synth's painter-side specificity tout court — H_synth's anchor at the November 1960 V&I "Time and chiasm" working note remains textually robust (per the live nov-1960-stiftung-grammatical-subject claim). What δ defeats is H_synth's generalization of the chiasm + Stiftung joint-operation grammar to the four-element architecture. The November 1960 working note is one site (a private working note, not finalized for publication) where chiasm and Stiftung do co-deploy. δ's textual finding is that across the published expressive corpus (IL 1952 + PoP §IIb 1959–61), the operative architectonic omits chiasm-grammar. The painter-side specificity that H_synth named is therefore not eliminated, but it is no longer the operative framing for the expressive register; it is recoverable, at most, as one register among several.

Verdict on Question 1: H_synth no longer stands as the operative thesis in the form it was first written. The painter-side specificity it foregrounded survives as one register, but the four-concept-synthesis-as-architecture framing is structurally contradicted by the supported δ claim. δ has become operative for the expressive register; H_synth's painter-side specificity (E&M's silent-key, the science-secrete question-figure, the painter-as-primary-witness) survives but no longer organizes the late-MP architecture as a whole.

2. Question 2 — If δ is adopted, which pages and claims must change?

This list distinguishes must-change-if-δ-adopted from must-change-regardless (i.e., already required by δ's supported status, independent of H_synth's fate).

2.1 δ-affected concept pages (named seed list, expanded)

Named seed list — required changes:

  • wiki/concepts/science-secrete.md — substantive rewrite of:
    • What the Concept Does §3 (science-secrete.md:98): the "four-element synthesis Paper A's H_synth thesis identifies" framing is structurally contradicted; restate as either (a) δ's three-tier cluster + science secrète as orienting question, or (b) painter-side specificity preserved as α-register only.
    • Connections (science-secrete.md:160): the typed "enacts the joint operation of chiasm + stiftung" connection is δ-contradicted; either remove or qualify with explicit framing-pressure note.
    • Synthetic Claims (science-secrete.md:179): H_synth's "thesis-central claim that grounds the H_synth four-element architecture" framing must be revised to reflect H_synth's status decision.
  • wiki/concepts/coherent-deformation.md — substantive revision of:
    • What the Concept Does §3 (coherent-deformation.md:75): the H_synth bridging gloss ("This is why H_synth's reading of E&M can take painting as the exemplary site of indirect ontology...") is δ-contradicted at the level of "exemplary site"; revise to align with δ's universal framing.
    • Synthetic Claims H_synth bullet (coherent-deformation.md:187): must be downgraded or clarified per H_synth's status decision.
    • Already changed at What It Rejects (coherent-deformation.md:86): δ's supported framing is in place. No further change needed there.
  • wiki/concepts/chiasm.md — substantive revision of:
    • Stakes section (chiasm.md:149): the H_synth axis treatment of E&M as exemplary site of joint-operation must be restated.
    • Connection between chiasm and the late ontology architecture (chiasm.md:235): "This is the axis Paper A's H_synth thesis ... uses to read painting in Eye and Mind" requires revision.
    • Synthetic Claims H_synth bullet (chiasm.md:253): per H_synth status decision.
  • wiki/concepts/stiftung.md — substantive revision of:
    • Stakes section (stiftung.md:103): the "H_synth axis" gloss requires revision.
    • Synthetic Claims H_synth bullet (stiftung.md:158): per H_synth status decision.

    • The "Eye and Mind as the Enacted Demonstration" subsection treats painting as "exemplary enactment of a joint operation" (fundamental-thought-in-art.md:90,92,101,105,107,111). Eight references to the joint operation as the architecture of fundamental thought in art. δ's universality finding (coherent deformation operates equally in literature) puts pressure on the exemplarity claim. Revision required: either reframe painting as one register among several (δ-aligned) or carve out a painter-side specificity within an explicit α/δ split.
    • Synthetic Claims and Connections (fundamental-thought-in-art.md:124,157): per H_synth status decision.
  • wiki/concepts/institution.md — minor revision of:
    • Connection at institution.md:246: "the diachronic mechanism in which science-secrete is enacted — Paper A's H_synth thesis ..." requires revision per H_synth status decision.

Pages outside the seed list that my reading surfaced:

  • wiki/concepts/ineinander.md (line 66) — "the result-figure for the chiasmic-Stiftung joint operation" — δ-contradicted at the architectural-framing level; under δ, the chiasmic-Stiftung joint-operation is no longer the cardinal architecture for the expressive register. Revision: either reframe Ineinander as the result-figure for the three-tier cluster (which is awkward — Ineinander is a chiasm-cognate) or retain it under the α-register if the α–δ split is adopted.
  • wiki/concepts/systeme-d-equivalences.md — likely δ-aligned already (the page is one of δ's wiki homes per claims.md:26); should be checked for explicit cite-back to δ as the lead synthetic anchor for the three-tier-cluster framing.
  • wiki/concepts/indirect-language.md — δ wiki home; should be aligned to δ's three-tier cluster framing if not already.

2.2 δ-affected claim slugs

Must-change-if-δ-adopted:

  • science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live, medium): Status decision required — see Question 3.
  • kaushik-stiftung-literary-frame (live, medium; claims.md:221): the live status was re-anchored 2026-04-28 with "the painter's-body register absent from Kaushik's literary framing is structurally absent from the pre-pivot moment Kaushik privileges" (claims.md:255). The claim's payoff (claims.md:248) explicitly cites "the painter's-body register, with science-secrete as its rhetorical figure and coherent-deformation as its operative form, is what the literary-language framing leaves under-developed." Under δ, coherent deformation is universal across painting and literature, so the claim's contrast with Kaushik's literary frame loses its sharpest edge — Kaushik and the wiki agree that coherent deformation operates in literature; the disagreement is now narrower (the painter-side specificity of the science-secrete register, not coherent deformation's location). Revision required: the Counterpressure must record δ's pressure; the Payoff must be restated to preserve only what δ leaves intact (the painter-as-primary-witness specificity, if α–δ split is adopted; or just the science-secrete primary-framing gap, if δ replaces H_synth).
  • taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception (candidate, speculative; claims.md:1543): the claim's Tension-with-H_synth section (claims.md:1564) must be restated to reflect H_synth's status decision; if H_synth is downgraded, the tension reformulates as Taddio-vs-δ rather than Taddio-vs-H_synth.
  • cryptic-institution-extends-beith (candidate, low; claims.md:379): the 2026-05-01 evidence augmentation (claims.md:423) anchors cryptic institution in the painter's non-thematic engagement with the three-tier cluster (per the (δ) reformulation framing). Under δ, the cryptic-institution thesis is strengthened in textual basis — it now has direct anchors at PoP raw 597/637/641 + IL raw 866. The Status is unaffected by δ adoption; what changes is the framing language: "what cryptic names: the painter's non-thematic engagement with the three-tier cluster" (claims.md:404) is the δ-aligned articulation. No status change required, but Counterpressure should note that the H_synth four-element framing the 2026-04-27 created entry assumed is now superseded.
  • faul-institutional-camp (live, medium; claims.md:468): the claim cross-references science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live) at claims.md:489. Under δ, the cross-reference's framing shifts but the claim's content (Faul is institutional, not ethical/existential) is untouched. Counterpressure should record that the painter-side framing is now under (δ) reformulation pressure.
  • ip-pop-architectural-hierarchy (live, medium; claims.md:300): the claim reads "the architectural-hierarchy claim ... lets claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm read E&M's painter as enacting a still-operative Stiftung + chiasm joint operation" (claims.md:333). Under δ, the joint-operation framing is structurally pressured. Revision: the Payoff section's H_synth-cross-reference must be updated to track H_synth's decision.
  • ineinander-universalizes-institution (live, medium; claims.md:259): cross-references H_synth at claims.md:279. The claim itself is not δ-affected at the content level but its H_synth cross-reference must track H_synth's status.
  • nov-1960-stiftung-grammatical-subject (live, medium; claims.md:341): the philological claim about the V&I November 1960 note's grammatical structure is independent of H_synth's architectural claim. The note remains a site where chiasm and Stiftung co-deploy; under δ this remains a fact of MP's working notes. Status: unchanged. This is an example of a claim that survives δ adoption intact — preserving the painter-side specificity of the chiasm-Stiftung articulation at one specific working-note site.
  • ingested-corpus-four-element-gap (supported, medium; claims.md:153): the claim is negative-evidence about the secondary corpus, not about MP's published text. Under δ, the four-element-gap finding remains true (no secondary source occupies the synthesis), but its payoff (claims.md:209) — that "the wiki's cross-cutting reading ... is doing original interpretive work" — must be reframed: under δ, the wiki's contribution is the three-tier expressive cluster + science-secrete two-register reading, not the four-element synthesis. No content change in the Claim itself; payoff and architectural framing must be updated.

Latent contestation zones (claims that touch the four-concept synthesis but are not on the seed list):

  • time-as-late-mp-privileged-ontological-clue (candidate, medium; claims.md:3373): the claim's Counterpressure (claims.md:3401) reads "The claim's payoff partially overlaps with science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live), which already gives Stiftung (a temporal mechanism) a load-bearing role." Under H_synth's downgrade or restatement, the Counterpressure framing requires update. The candidate's content (time as the privileged ontological clue subsuming flesh, écart, chiasm) is independent of H_synth's architectural claim, but its overlap-articulation depends on H_synth's wording.
  • mp-1942-already-prefigures-late-sedimentation (live, medium; claims.md:2748): cross-references H_synth at claims.md:2769 ("Structurally consonant with the broader claim cluster: claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live) and claims#ineinander-universalizes-institution (live) both treat the sedimentation/Stiftung complex as central to MP's late ontology"). The 1942-prefiguration claim is δ-compatible (sedimentation/Stiftung remains central in δ; it's just that chiasm is no longer co-architectural with Stiftung in the expressive register). Revision: cross-reference language must track H_synth's status, but the genealogical claim itself is untouched.
  • circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology (supported, medium): cross-references H_synth at the "parallel it draws to claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm" framing in concept-page cite-backs. Under δ, the parallel weakens but the supported claim's content holds. Concept-page cite-back text requires update.
  • Other claims with H_synth cross-references in their Sources, Counterpressure, or Payoff fields (per Bash search above): the index of "joint operation" deployments on concept pages spans roughly 17 sites across 8 concept pages; each is a δ-affected revision target.

2.3 Must-change-regardless (δ already supported, independent of H_synth)

These are obligations Phase 8 ought to discharge anyway, since δ is supported:

  • wiki/concepts/coherent-deformation.md What It Rejects (line 86) — already reflects δ. No change required.
  • wiki/concepts/coherent-deformation.md Synthetic Claims (line 191) — already records δ as supported. No change required.
  • wiki/concepts/systeme-d-equivalences.md — δ wiki home; should already cite δ as supported (sixth-run report records the new Synthetic Claims section was created 2026-05-04).
  • wiki/concepts/indirect-language.md — δ wiki home; should already cite δ as supported.

The "must-change-regardless" set is small precisely because δ's cite-back was discharged at the sixth Phase 8 run (2026-05-04). The remaining work is what δ-vs-H_synth reconciliation requires.

3. Question 3 — science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm fate

Four options were canvassed in the 2026-05-01 cross-text re-audit. Their tradeoffs:

3.1 Option α — Stay live, no rewrite

Reasoning for: H_synth's painter-side specificity is anchored at the November 1960 V&I working note (per nov-1960-stiftung-grammatical-subject live, philologically sound). The four-element synthesis remains the wiki's distinct interpretive contribution; downgrading or rewriting prematurely would discard work the supported ingested-corpus-four-element-gap payoff still relies on.

Reasoning against: H_synth's own 2026-05-01 Status History (claims.md:149) records that "the Claim as currently stated (mutual-conditioning grammar) is now textually under-supported on its own source texts" and that "the supported-gate criterion 5 ... is now firmly blocked". Staying live without rewrite leaves the live status formally outside its own articulated promotion gate. It also leaves the wiki saying H_synth and δ at the same time across overlapping concept-page sections, which is the current operational signature of unresolved decision.

3.2 Option β — Rewrite in place under δ

Reasoning for: The supported δ framing is now the wiki's most authoritative articulation of the expressive architecture. Rewriting H_synth as "science secrète names indirect ontology in two registers (painter / philosopher); chiasm/Ineinander is a coordinate-but-separable register addressing perceptual reflexivity; the operative architecture is the three-tier cluster" — i.e., adopting the (δ) reformulation language already recorded in H_synth's Counterpressure (claims.md:137) — would resolve the contradiction by absorbing H_synth into δ's framing. The painter-side specificity that survives (E&M's science-secrete attestation, the painter-as-primary-witness for indirect ontology) would be preserved as one register within the three-tier cluster.

Reasoning against: Rewriting the same claim slug under structurally different content risks slug-drift: future readers consulting the slug see the new content but not the architectural shift. (This is what the slug-vs-rhetorical-title rule in CLAUDE.md is partly designed against, but the issue is still real for substantial content change.) Rewriting also risks losing track of what was tried and didn't work: the H_synth framing was a legitimate first articulation that the cross-text re-audit then defeated; preserving it as a retired or contested claim documents the wiki's epistemic history.

3.3 Option γ — Split into α/δ variants

Reasoning for: The painter-side specificity H_synth named (E&M's science-secrete question, the painter-as-primary-witness for indirect ontology, the four-element synthesis as a register of MP's late thought) is not nothing; δ does not displace it. An α–δ split would preserve H_synth's painter-side framing as a distinct claim (perhaps under a new slug like science-secrete-painter-side-register or mp-painter-as-primary-witness) while letting δ hold the operative-form-architectonic role. Each retains a distinct sphere; cross-references make the relation explicit. This option matches the structure of CLAUDE.md's Positions section guidance ("represent competing claims explicitly ... let the disagreement stand").

Reasoning against: The α–δ split makes the wiki carry two architectural framings, requiring discipline to keep them coordinated. It also assumes H_synth's painter-side specificity as-such is a defensible claim — which requires some restatement, since H_synth's current Claim text (claims.md:112) commits to the four-element mutual-conditioning grammar, not to a narrower painter-side specificity. The α-half of the split would itself need rewriting; "preserve H_synth as α" is therefore not quite accurate — what would actually happen is "split H_synth's defensible painter-side-specificity content out as α, retire or contest the four-element-mutual-conditioning content."

3.4 Option δ — Downgrade to candidate

Reasoning for: H_synth's own 2026-05-01 Status History anticipates this option: "downgrade to candidate is warranted if the (δ) reformulation is not adopted soon". A candidate downgrade preserves the slug, marks the architectural framing as in-revision, and unblocks the live-status problem. Concept-page cite-backs would shift to "(candidate)" framing, which is a known operational mode.

Reasoning against: Downgrading without rewriting leaves the H_synth Claim text contradicting the supported δ Claim text in the register; the contradiction lives at the slug level rather than at the status-text level. A candidate-status H_synth would also continue to do load-bearing work on concept pages with provisional framing, which is awkward when the supported δ already exists for substantial portions of what H_synth covers.

3.5 Recommendation for Q3

The cleanest move is Option γ (α–δ split) followed by retire-or-contest of the four-element-mutual-conditioning content:

  1. Rename or retire the science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm slug to reflect that the four-element-synthesis-as-mutual-conditioning-architecture content is no longer the wiki's operative claim. Status: retired or contested, preserved with the rationale documented in Status History per CLAUDE.md retirement-preservation rule.
  2. Create a successor slug — e.g., mp-painter-as-primary-witness-for-indirect-ontology — that captures what survives: the painter-as-primary-witness specificity, E&M's science-secrete attestation as the orienting question-figure for indirect ontology (the science-secrete.md Stakes section's "Second" point at line 118), the November 1960 working note as one site where chiasm and Stiftung do co-deploy. Status: live (3-test gate passes on the narrower content; cross-text counterpressure acknowledges δ's universality finding for the expressive architecture).
  3. Update concept-page cite-backs: replace claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm references with the successor slug where the painter-side specificity is what's load-bearing; remove the citation entirely where the four-element-synthesis-as-architecture framing was what the cite was doing.

This is structurally option γ with explicit rewrite of the α-content, not preservation of H_synth as α. The user may prefer option β (rewrite-in-place) or option δ (downgrade-without-rewrite) on grounds of operational simplicity, schema-conservatism, or slug-stability — those are legitimate reasons.

4. Question 4 — coherent-deformation-universal-operative-form restatement

4.1 Does the supported framing need to acknowledge it has reframed the architecture?

The supported δ Counterpressure at claims.md:578 already states that the corrective targets H_synth's framing. The Payoff at claims.md:585 already articulates the architectural reframing: "the four-element synthesis can be preserved as a four-register reading of MP's late ontology only by treating chiasm as the separable register, not as a coordinate axis with Stiftung in joint-operation grammar. This is what the (δ) reformulation in questions/h-synth-reaudit-on-original-textual-basis proposes." So the supported framing already names the reframing.

What it does not do is take responsibility for the consequences. The supported claim's Counterpressure (claims.md:579) explicitly carves out the architectonic three-element-cluster framing as "contingent on (δ) but the universality finding is independent." This is a defensible methodological move (the supported promotion's criterion-5 reasoning rests on the universality finding alone, not on the architectonic). But it also means the supported claim is partially silent about what its own adoption would require for H_synth.

Recommendation for the supported claim: expand Payoff to include an explicit "what this leaves to be reckoned with" paragraph, naming H_synth's reframing as the reckoning. This is light-touch — it does not change the supported claim's content, only makes its consequences legible.

4.2 Should the supported claim cite H_synth in Counterpressure as false-friend caution?

A "false-friend caution: δ does not displace the painter-side specificity that H_synth named" framing would be useful on the painter-side wiki homes (science-secrete.md, coherent-deformation.md, chiasm.md's painting register), but as a claims.md-level Counterpressure entry it would mix three distinct registers: (a) δ's universality finding, which is empirical; (b) δ's architectural framing, which is contingent on (δ) reformulation; (c) what δ does and does not displace, which is interpretive.

Recommendation: do not put a false-friend caution in δ's Counterpressure. Put it at science-secrete.md (Open Questions or a new "Interpretive layers preserved across the δ reframing" subsection) and at coherent-deformation.md (already present at line 86's "Painterly specificity" rejection — could be expanded to acknowledge that the rejection targets the anchoring of coherent deformation as painterly-specific, not the painter-side specificity of science secrète as such).

The δ claim's job is to articulate what the texts compel; the false-friend layer is interpretive scaffolding that lives on concept pages, not in the claim register.

5. Question 5 — Effect on Phase 8 candidate→live promotion eligibility

For each candidate touching the four-concept synthesis, my reading produces the following adjudication:

5.1 time-as-late-mp-privileged-ontological-clue (candidate, medium; claims.md:3373)

  • Touches the synthesis? Yes via the Counterpressure overlap with H_synth (claims.md:3401).
  • Auto-promotion-eligible under any of H_synth / δ / α–δ split? Yes under all three. The candidate's content (time as the privileged ontological clue) is structurally compatible with δ (which reframes the expressive architecture but does not displace the question of what the temporal register does in late MP); compatible with H_synth (which treats Stiftung as the diachronic mechanism); compatible with α–δ split (preserves both registers).
  • Halt-pending-decision? No structural reason to halt. The decision affects the cross-reference framing in the candidate's Counterpressure but not its content.
  • Verdict: not halt-pending; status decision can proceed independently of A's adjudication, but cross-reference language in any subsequent live-promotion Status History should track the H_synth decision.

5.2 mp-1942-already-prefigures-late-sedimentation (live, ingest-seeded)

  • Touches the synthesis? Yes via the Evidence cross-reference at claims.md:2769.
  • Already at live, not candidate. Question 5's framing applies forward to next status changes.
  • Promotion-to-supported eligibility under three-options-architectural-framing? The supported gate requires the criterion-5 confidence-survival test. Under H_synth (current text), the criterion-5 test is partially blocked because H_synth itself has criterion-5 blocked (the cross-reference framing inherits H_synth's structural problem). Under δ adopted, the cross-reference framing is updated and the supported gate becomes about the genealogical claim (1942 anchor for sedimentation/passivity) on its own merits. Under α–δ split, similar but with the painter-side specificity preserved.
  • Halt-pending-decision for any future supported promotion? Yes — supported-promotion eligibility depends on the cross-reference framing being clean.
  • Verdict: no current halt; future supported-promotion attempts on this slug should wait for A's decision.

  • Touches the synthesis? Yes — wiki home includes science-secrete, coherent-deformation; Evidence anchored on the (δ)-reformulated reading of the painter's non-thematic engagement with the three-tier cluster (claims.md:404).

Promotion to live no longer requires textual support (textual anchors at PoP raw 597/637/641 + IL raw 866 are in place per 2026-05-01 Status History, claims.md:423); it requires only a Paper A specifying-statement of what cryptic adds beyond Faul's interactive. The textual anchors are already δ-aligned. Halt-pending-decision because the promotion's framing language depends on whether the wiki is operating under H_synth, δ, or α–δ split — the specifying-statement of "what cryptic adds" reads differently in each register.

5.4 taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception (candidate, speculative)

  • Touches the synthesis? Yes — explicit H_synth tension at claims.md:1564–1565.
  • Auto-promotion-eligible? Promotion to live requires "either explicit textual comparison with H_synth on science-secrete (with both readings articulated as Positions) or a second source supporting the Gestalt-grounded reading" (claims.md:1575). Under δ, the H_synth framing the candidate's promotion-criterion references no longer exists in current form; the criterion needs restating.

5.6 Halt-pending-decision summary

Two candidates halt: cryptic-institution-extends-beith (because its specifying-statement depends on the architectural framing) and taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception (because its promotion criterion explicitly references H_synth-as-defined-now). One live claim's future-supported-promotion eligibility halts: mp-1942-already-prefigures-late-sedimentation. All other candidates can proceed under their normal Phase 8 assessment.

6. Recommendation

Option γ (α–δ split with explicit rewrite of α-content) is most defensible because it lets each thesis hold the work it actually does without claiming work it does not do.

The painter-side specificity H_synth originally named — the silent-key recovery of science secrète as orienting question-figure for indirect ontology, the painter-as-primary-witness in Eye and Mind, the November 1960 V&I working note as a textual site where chiasm and Stiftung do co-deploy — survives δ's textual finding. What δ shows is that this painter-side specificity is not the operative architecture for the expressive register across MP's published corpus (IL, PoP, Signs); the expressive register operates as a three-tier cluster that omits chiasm-grammar. These are two findings about different things; the wiki can carry both.

What does not survive H_synth's original framing is the four-element-mutual-conditioning grammar — the claim that science secrète + coherent deformation + chiasm + Stiftung name one operation in MP's published text. That claim is structurally contradicted by δ's textual evidence (claims.md:131) and is what the H_synth Status History at claims.md:149 itself describes as "textually under-supported on its own source texts." The α–δ split therefore requires retiring or contesting the four-element-mutual-conditioning content while preserving the painter-side specificity as a successor live claim under a new slug.

Reasons the user might pick a different option:

  • Option β (rewrite H_synth in place under δ) is preferable if slug-stability and operational simplicity are higher priority than preserving the painter-side specificity as a distinct register. This option also more cleanly resolves the contradiction at the slug level. The cost: the painter-side specificity is absorbed into δ's universal framing, which loses the structural marker that Eye and Mind's painter-as-primary-witness reading is a distinctive register, not just one register among many.

  • Option δ (downgrade-to-candidate) is preferable if the user judges the (δ) reformulation has not been adopted yet — i.e., that the textual basis for δ is settled but the architectural reframing for the wiki's late-MP scaffolding is still in progress. A candidate H_synth lets the architectural framing remain in flux without forcing an immediate rewrite.

  • Option α (stay live, no rewrite) is preferable only if the user judges H_synth's painter-side specificity is what was always doing the work and the four-element-mutual-conditioning grammar was a misstatement of the actual claim. This is a possible reading but would require restating H_synth's Claim text to remove the mutual-conditioning grammar — which is functionally option β with a softer touch.

The decision is yours; my judgment is that γ is most defensible, but β and δ are both legitimate routes that I have not adequately weighted relative to your priorities.
