Phase 8 — Synthetic-layer assembly (fourth run)

Date: 2026-04-29 Audit phase: Phase 8 (synthetic-layer assembly), per AUDIT_PLAN.md §Phase 8 + R8 promotion rule, and CLAUDE.md v0d §Workflow: Audit + §Claims Register Format. Operational mode: Claude Code (R8 supported-promotion rule = halt). Inputs: prior reports synthetic-layer-2026-04-27.md, synthetic-layer-2026-04-28.md, synthetic-layer-2026-04-29.md (third run earlier today); wiki/claims.md (26 prior entries: 21 live, 5 candidate, 0 supported); five new extraction notes from today's ingests (Faul 2024, Malraux 1953, Inkpin 2026, Taddio 2025, Saint Aubert 2023); raw E&C 2023 paper at raw/etre et chair chez Merleau-Ponty.md for targeted Saint Aubert checks; AUDIT_PLAN.md §Phase 8 + R8 + §Subsequent runs.

Trigger: Five major ingests landed today between the third Phase 8 run (commit c65d205) and now. Two of those ingests (Faul 2024, Malraux 1953) were named in the third-run Carry-forward as missing artifacts blocking specific candidate claims. Ingests committed at 95d2d6a, 34a746a, 5531580, 93515e7, 06818f5. The Faul and Malraux ingests already ran their own Phase 8 work at ingest time (Faul promoted faul-institutional-camp candidate→live and added Faul as evidence to cryptic-institution-extends-beith; Malraux added 3 new claim entries: malraux-metamorphosis-precedes-mp-advent live, malraux-schema-precedes-mp-coherent-deformation-philological-refinement live, art-as-absolute-replaces-religion-malraux-thesis candidate). The fourth run's task is to (a) walk the residual claim candidates from the three other ingests (Inkpin, Taddio, Saint Aubert 2023) which were explicitly deferred to Phase 8; (b) discharge two further deferred raw checks now possible (Malraux-side textual check on deformation-coherente-mp-coinage; chronological-priority sub-thesis on valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution); (c) discharge the cite-back queue from the third run that was filed for "separate commit" but never performed.

Cap (per Step 8.6 / subsequent-run guidance): this run focused on (a) deferred-Phase-8 candidates from Inkpin, Taddio, Saint Aubert 2023 ingests (8 candidates surveyed across the three sources); (b) the Faul-extraction-deferred new candidate (Faul ↔ van Sorge corrective convergence); (c) discharged raw checks for Malraux side. Four new live promotions + four new candidate entries + two existing-claim Counterpressure augmentations + outstanding cite-back from third run + this run's own cite-back. Concept-page upgrades (Step 8.5) deferred to next run.

Walked per AUDIT_PLAN.md §Step 8.2 with subsequent-run modifications:

  1. Extraction-note Pass 3 Part D / Claim Candidates (new ingests since third run) — read in priority order:

    • Faul 2024: 4 candidates considered (A through D). Candidates A (corrective extension) subsumed under existing cryptic-institution-extends-beith. Candidate B (faul-institutional-camp) already promoted candidate→live at Faul ingest time. Candidate C (cryptic-institution-extends-beith) — Faul evidence added at ingest, but the cryptic-specifying-statement gap remains, so the claim stays at candidate with the user's input required for promotion; this is not a wiki-side decision per the extraction.     • Malraux 1953: 3 candidates already promoted at ingest time. No new Phase 8 work needed; carry-forward Counterpressure work (chronological-priority on valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution; Malraux-side English-text check on deformation-coherente-mp-coinage) performed.
    • Inkpin 2026: 3 candidates explicitly deferred to Phase 8. Promoted candidate 1 (sedimentation-pluralizes-by-practice-type) to live. Candidates 2 (PdP-exclusion-as-Husserlian-residue) and 3 (top-down-explanation-inversion) deferred — candidate 2 overlaps significantly with Kee 2025's already-on-wiki linguistic-sedimentation qualification, candidate 3 lacks sufficient wiki-side engagement with Heidegger and Foucault to license promotion.
    • Taddio 2025: 3 candidates explicitly deferred to Phase 8. Promoted candidate 2 (phenomenal-invariants-replace-resemblance-and-denotation) to live. Promoted candidate 1 (taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception) to candidate (alternative reading of H_synth, recorded as competing Position rather than synthesis). Candidate 3 (gestalt-as-experimental-grammar-of-vision) folded into phenomenal-invariants-replace-resemblance-and-denotation's Payoff section as sub-thesis rather than promoted as separate claim.
    • Saint Aubert 2023: 5 candidates explicitly deferred to Phase 8. Promoted candidates 2 and 3 (mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib, ontologie-de-la-chair-misnomer) to live after targeted raw checks at Saint Aubert 2023 raw lines 171 and 189. Promoted candidates 1 and 4 (portance-four-gestures-typology, etre-not-monde-but-rends-sensible-monde) to candidate. Candidate 5 (etre-makes-us-human-not-only-other) deferred — limited textual evidence in the 2023 paper alone; the books may carry it more thoroughly but those are not in raw/.

  2. Source-page "What's Not Obvious" — deferred again per cap (carry-forward from prior runs); explicitly re-deferred to next run (E&M, V&I, I&P, PoP, Beith, Knight; now also extending to Faul, Malraux, Inkpin, Taddio, Saint Aubert 2023 once they're stable).

  3. wiki/motifs.md BRIDGE entries — third run discharged the deferred BRIDGE walk for the corpus; no new BRIDGE entries to walk this run. Two BRIDGE entries deferred in third run (self-falsification ↔ chiasm; granite-of-fate) remain deferred — no new sources this run authorize their promotion.

  4. Prior audit reports in wiki/.audit/ — re-examined synthetic-layer-2026-04-27.md, synthetic-layer-2026-04-28.md, synthetic-layer-2026-04-29.md. The third run's Carry-forward §Soft-spot raw checks named: V&I Gallimard 1964 Fr 320–321 (still not in raw/); Malraux Les voix du silence (Pléiade 1951) p. 322 / Skira La Création esthétique (still not in raw/ — only the English Stuart Gilbert 1953 Voices of Silence is in raw/); Heidegger Nietzsche lectures (still not in raw/). The English Malraux discharges the English-side of deformation-coherente-mp-coinage's Malraux-side check; the other two soft spots remain.

  5. User-memory thesis nominations — none specific to this run (no fresh snapshot beyond userMemory-snapshot-2026-04-27.md). Per Rule 17, no further user-memory authorization needed; all this run's promotions are artifact-grounded.

  6. Seed claim candidates (deferred raw checks) — discharged: chronological-priority sub-thesis of valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution via Malraux 1953 English ingest; Malraux-side English-text check of deformation-coherente-mp-coinage via the same ingest. Targeted raw checks at Saint Aubert 2023 lines 171 and 189 verified the two new Saint Aubert-derived live claims directly.

    • etre-not-monde-but-rends-sensible-monde ↔ existing: coordinate with ontologie-de-la-chair-misnomer (both Saint Aubert anti-monism corrections); the misnomer claim handles the chair = être equation, the etre-not-monde claim handles the être = monde equation. Not duplicative; both needed for the strict-anti-monism reading.
    • faul-vansorge-corrective-convergence ↔ existing: not duplicate. Coordinate with mp-painting-account-too-presence-bound (live, van Sorge §6 anchor) and with cryptic-institution-extends-beith (candidate, post-Faul-ingest reformulation).
    • taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception ↔ existing: not duplicate. Tension with science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (live, H_synth) — the two readings target the same MP attestation with different methodological commitments and are tracked as alternative Positions on [[science-secrete]], not duplicative.

  • False-friend caution: none added this run as separate cautions. The Taddio reading of science secrète was promoted to claim-candidate rather than recorded as false-friend caution because the reading is positively articulated and contestable, not just "tempting but inadequate" — it deserves the more rigorous claim-status treatment. The Inkpin candidates 2 and 3 were deferred, not recorded as false-friend cautions, because their not-yet-promoted status is provisional rather than final.

  • Artifact conservatism (Rule 18): applied to the chronological-priority sub-thesis discharge on valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution. The Valéry tome II extraction note (2026-04-28) was adequate for the parent attribution claim; the chronological-priority sub-thesis required the Malraux-side anchor that the 2026-04-29 Malraux ingest now provides. The local-context check on the Malraux ingest's coherent deformation finding (English Voices contains 0 hits) verified the negative evidence directly; no Rule 18 discrepancy was exposed.

  • Audit-report-authorization rule (CLAUDE.md General Rule 17 second paragraph): prior audit reports cited in this run's Counterpressure sections are traceably anchored. synthetic-layer-2026-04-29.md (third run, today) anchors to V&I Lawlor lines 2885–2891 + 2899–2903, SW&WE 1953 lines 1587 + 1651, and Johnson 2020 line 1997 + line 3364 — all extraction-note-anchored or raw-source-verified. The third-run report meets the traceable-anchoring standard.

Counterpressure rewritten: Malraux's substantive déformation cohérente (1947–49 Psychologie de l'art / 1951 Voix du silence) is chronologically posterior to Valéry's 1942 reflexive se déforme. The chronological-priority sub-thesis now states availability, not derivation: when MP encounters Malraux's déformation cohérente in 1951, the Valérian se déforme register is already 9 years old in MP's reading-history. The English-side absence is now empirically anchored. The French-side check at La Création esthétique p. 152 / Pléiade Voix du silence p. 322 remains outstanding (French source still not in raw/). Counterpressure expanded; Status History updated; confidence stays at medium (the French-side check is what Johnson's coinage attribution most directly depends on).

Concept-page upgrades (Step 8.5)

Out of scope this run. Pass 3 of the v0c migration discharged the upgrade quota; the 2026-04-28, 2026-04-29 (third run), and now this fourth run all defer. Subsequent runs should cycle to a different set of HUB / thesis-central pages until coverage is even.

The third run's handoff §Next-audit-run flagged the deferred extraction-note Diagnostics + Recurring Motifs sample (E&M, V&I, I&P, PoP, Beith, Knight) for concept-page upgrades. This remains deferred. Bottom line

The fourth Phase 8 run produces 4 new live claim entries (1 from Inkpin, 1 from Taddio, 2 from Saint Aubert 2023) plus 4 new candidate entries (2 from Saint Aubert 2023, 1 from Faul-extraction-deferred, 1 from Taddio). The register grows from 26 to 34 entries (25 live + 9 candidate + 0 supported); the live count grows from 21 to 25. Two existing claims received Counterpressure augmentations from newly-arrived sources (chronological-priority sub-thesis discharged on valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution; Malraux-side textual check partially discharged on deformation-coherente-mp-coinage). The four new live claims add Saint Aubert philological corrections to the synthetic layer (chair vs. Leib; ontologie de la chair misnomer), Inkpin's typological reading of sedimentation, and Taddio's phenomenal-invariants corrective to anglophone aesthetics. Cite-back for the third run's outstanding 5 entries plus this run's 8 new entries was performed in this commit, discharging the cite-back queue. Zero supported promotions: R8 honored; conservative subsequent-run target met. Today's five ingests have now been fully integrated into the synthetic layer.

Per CLAUDE.md v0d §Workflow: Audit and AUDIT_PLAN.md §Step 8.8: after Phase 8 completes, perform a confidence-addendum review of any concept page or claim entry whose confidence may have changed because of synthetic-layer assembly.

Confidence settings on this run's new claims

  • mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib: confidence set at medium on creation. The Saint Aubert 2023 raw line 171 anchor is verified; the corpus statistic is testable. low would be too cautious given Saint Aubert's authoritative philological position; high would require either Saint Aubert 2004 (the systematic treatment) in raw/ or an independent corpus audit.

  • ontologie-de-la-chair-misnomer: confidence set at medium on creation. Saint Aubert 2023 raw line 189 verifies the direct articulation; the corrective framing is testable against the secondary literature. low would understate the Saint Aubert authority; high would require either testing across more secondary sources to demonstrate the misnomer's circulation or ingesting Saint Aubert 2006 / 2021 systematic treatments.

  • sedimentation-pluralizes-by-practice-type: confidence set at medium on creation. The PdM 142 / IP 117 / Husserl 368 anchors are MP / Husserl primary-source attestations; the typological reading is Inkpin's reconstruction. low would be too cautious given the primary-source anchoring; high would require either another secondary source articulating the same typology or demonstration that MP's PdM/IP material is settled doctrine rather than tension-with-PdP.

  • phenomenal-invariants-replace-resemblance-and-denotation: confidence set at medium on creation. Taddio §§2, 6, 7, 8 anchor the corrective formulation; the rival theories (Gombrich, Goodman, Wollheim) are not on the wiki, so the corrective claim is anchored in Taddio's reading of those theories rather than direct engagement. low would understate the corrective's textual specificity; high would require ingesting one or more of the rival primary texts.

  • portance-four-gestures-typology: confidence set at low on creation. The cardinality (four rather than three or five) is constructive; Saint Aubert 2006 not in raw/. speculative would be too cautious given Saint Aubert 2023 III.2's direct articulation; medium would require Saint Aubert 2006 in raw/ or independent confirmation from another source.

  • etre-not-monde-but-rends-sensible-monde: confidence set at low on creation. The strict anti-monism reading is Saint Aubert's interpretive contribution; Saint Aubert 2006 not in raw/. speculative would be too cautious given the V&I title-hesitation + October 1960 marginal rewrite anchors; medium would require Saint Aubert 2006 in raw/ or a sustained close reading of the late MP working notes that confirms the strict reading.

  • faul-vansorge-corrective-convergence: confidence set at low on creation. The convergence is wiki-side synthesis; no third-party articulation. speculative would be too cautious given the textually-anchored Faul §1/§3 + van Sorge §6 attestations; medium would require either a third-party commentator articulating the convergence or a sustained Phase 8 audit confirming the convergence-pattern across multiple correctives.

  • taddio-secret-science-as-gestalt-perception: confidence set at speculative on creation. The Taddio reading is explicitly in tension with H_synth (the wiki's standing reading per science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm live); promotion to low or medium would require either explicit textual comparison with H_synth (which would itself require articulating both as Positions on [[science-secrete]]) or a second source supporting the Gestalt-grounded reading.

Confidence changes on existing claims

  • valery-mauvaises-pensees-attribution: confidence stays at medium. The chronological-priority sub-thesis is now discharged, but the under-determination of the "dit Valéry" target (whether MP paraphrases this fragment specifically, or reconstructs from multiple Pléiade tome II loci) keeps the parent claim at medium rather than promoting to supported. The discharge tightens the evidence chain without eliminating the residual under-determination.

  • deformation-coherente-mp-coinage: confidence stays at medium. The Malraux-side English-text check is partially discharged; the French-side check at La Création esthétique p. 152 is what Johnson's coinage attribution most directly depends on, and it remains outstanding. The English-side discharge tightens the wiki's claim that anglophone MP-readers cannot find the locution in Gilbert's Voices; it does not advance the underlying philological claim about the French original.

Concept-page confidence

No concept-page confidence changes are forced by this run. Three concept pages flagged for review at next concept-page-upgrade cycle:
