Rule-18 targeted raw check — MP's Galileo/mathematization passage (audit v1.8 D2)

The flagged question

The 2026-06-07 Phase-8 run created [[claims#husserl-bergson-galilean-substitution]] (live/medium) on 2 independent primary pillars — Husserl Crisis §9 (Galileo's mathematization = Ideenkleid / discovery-concealment) and Bergson CE Ch. IV (the cinematographic-spatializing intellect substitutes temps-longueur for duration). MP was recorded as a non-independent supporting attestation, with a flag: "a targeted MP-Galileo-passage check is needed before MP counts as a third corner." The motifs.md mathematization entry carried the matching open question (line 454): "whether MP's Galileo/mathematization critique is a third registral position (as with élan-vital) or straight Husserlian inheritance."

The payoff of the claim rests on Husserl↔Bergson independence (no mutual influence + near-opposite metaphysics of matter). MP read both, so MP can never be a third independent pillar; the only live question is whether MP adds a distinct registral diagnosis worth citing as a third corner.

Passages checked (extraction-note anchors → raw local context)

Source Locus What MP actually does Register
Possibility of Philosophy (1959–61 course on the Crisis) C1-A6, raw lines 377–382 Glosses "the Galilean mathematization" with Husserl's own Entdeckung/Verdeckung (discovery-concealment): "science discovers only by also covering"; mathematization "presupposes a Tat of human institution it cannot acknowledge as its origin." Note's own label: "MP, following Husserl." Straight Husserlian inheritance
Nature (Course 1, pp. 64–68) extraction §19 The Galileo reference is Bergson's — MP expounding the retrograde-movement point ("in research like Galileo's, much more was implied than what Galileo found"). MP-as-commentator-on-Bergson. Bergson-mediated (non-independent)
Primacy of Perception (pp. 86–92) extraction §2 Galileo used positively — induction as "idealizing fictions cum fundamento in re (Galileo, Newton)," a model of eidetic method. Cum fundamento in re leans to Bergson's "founded in re" pole, not Husserl's "method mistaken for being." Endorsement, not substitution-critique. Methodologically positive

(Nature Course 1 also carries MP's own critique of the Cartesian/infinitist conception of nature — partes extra partes, Koyré's "change in the idea of Nature allowed the discoveries, not vice versa" — but that is a critique of the Cartesian ontology of nature, not of the Galilean mathematization-substitution that is this claim's specific object.)

Verdict — CONFIRMATION (no halt)

MP's specific Galileo/mathematization treatment is straight Husserlian inheritance, not a third registral position of the kind élan-vital occupies vis-à-vis mechanism/finalism. MP either (i) restates Husserl's discovery-concealment "following Husserl" (PoP), (ii) reports Bergson's Galileo (Nature), or (iii) uses Galileo affirmatively as a method-model (PoP induction). None is an independent third diagnosis.

Consequences (all confirmations of the existing framing — auto-approved, no status change):

  • husserl-bergson-galilean-substitution stays live/medium, 2 independent pillars. MP confirmed supporting, not a third corner. The two-pillar structure is now final, not provisional.
  • The independence-based payoff is strengthened: finding MP a Husserlian inheritor protects the claim from the false "three-way convergence" it explicitly declined to assert.
  • motifs.md line-454 open question resolved: straight Husserlian inheritance.

No reinterpretation of any existing reading; the halt condition did not fire.
