Plato-cohort motifs delta — audit v1.9 Phase 3 (2026-06-23)

Run: v1.9 Plato-cohort comprehensive audit · branch claude/audit-2026-06-23 Method: 1 read-only drafter, opus 1M, direct attestation over the 38 Plato extraction notes' ## Recurring Motifs sections (cross-checked against Pass-3/Part-D flags + the 7 cousin-claim bodies). aggregate-motifs.py was run as a sanity reference only — it remains unreliable (this cycle: mechanical HUB count = 10 vs curated ~57; variant-fragmentation glues many headings into one mega-key). All counts below are direct-attestation.

Status: PROPOSAL. The motifs.md write is held for the Wave-A checkpoint — two HUB/STRUCTURAL boundary calls are governance HALTs (per the standing Pre-Authorization Defaults).

Summary

  • 9 new Plato-internal motif entries proposed (all STRUCTURAL or THEME; zero corpus-HUB).
  • 6 cross-tradition BRIDGE entries (the 7th "pair", peras-apeiron↔khōra, is intra-Plato → routed to a typed connection, NOT a BRIDGE).
  • 4 weight-shifts on existing motifs (1 actionable now, 3 flag-only).
  • HUB-window: at 122 sources the window is (6,15)×122/29 ≈ (25, 63); the corpus's ~57 HUBs now sit in-window for the first time in several cycles. No Plato motif reaches corpus-HUB.

Finding (meta): motifs.md already carries 6 Plato-native STRUCTURAL entries from the ingest waves (weaving/sumplokē, measure/to-metrion, craft/technē, elenchus, expert-vs-many, disease/cure) — all method/ethics motifs. The waves under-weighted Plato's metaphysical spine; all 9 proposed entries (Forms, recollection, being/becoming, eros/metaxu, diairesis, cave/light, mimesis, priority-of-soul, flux) are new and non-duplicative. The motif index has been tracking the Socratic Plato and missing the metaphysical Plato.

§1 — Proposed Plato-internal motif entries (9)

# Motif Attest Proposed weight Wiki homes Note
1 the Forms / X-itself / auto kath' hauto / methexis / chōrismos 7 (Phaedo, Parmenides, Republic, Symposium, Meno, Philebus, Timaeus) STRUCTURAL ⚠️ borderline-HUB theory-of-forms, third-man-argument, (participation-methexis*, separation-chorismos*) HUB-weight within Plato; thin cross-author (wiki engages Forms as the anti-Platonic target of MP/Carbone/Deleuze, not a shared motif). GOVERNANCE HALT — see §4.
2 recollection / anamnesis / learning-as-recovery 3 (Meno, Phaedo, Phaedrus) STRUCTURAL anamnesis, maieutics, theory-of-forms Plato side of the anamnesis↔Stiftung cousin (BRIDGE §2). Do not fold periagōgē in as a 4th — Republic explicitly contrasts it.
3 being vs becoming / being vs seeming / appearing (phainesthai) 7 (Republic, Sophist, Parmenides, Philebus, Timaeus, Theaetetus, Hippias Major) STRUCTURAL ⚠️ borderline-HUB being-becoming*, non-being, theory-of-forms, appearance-reality* Heterogeneous bundle (vertical being/becoming + moral being/seeming + appearance/phantasm). GOVERNANCE HALT — see §4. Not-being strand already tracked by plato-not-beings-spine.
4 eros as ascent / love-as-lack / the ladder / metaxu 4 (Symposium, Phaedrus, Lysis, Republic) STRUCTURAL eros, philia, diotima, the-between-metaxu* metaxu sub-figure is the natural Plato anchor for a future cross-tradition between/intermediate motif.
5 collection & division / diairesis (cutting at natural joints) 4 (Sophist, Statesman, Phaedrus, Philebus) STRUCTURAL collection-and-division, diairesis* Genuine gap: the existing weaving/sumplokē entry treats binding; diairesis (its inverse, cutting) has no standalone entry. Late-Plato methodological signature.
6 the cave / light / sun / upward path / periagōgē 4 (Republic, Symposium, Letter 7, Phaedo) STRUCTURAL allegory-of-the-cave, form-of-the-good, the-divided-line, periagoge* Republic HUB-in-source; cross-Plato 3–4. Plato side of cave/Good↔aletheia (BRIDGE §2). Letter 7 341c–d feeds the fire-HUB weight-shift (§3).
7 image / copy / mimesis / eikōn (model-copy hierarchy) 5 (Timaeus, Critias, Cratylus, Republic, Sophist) STRUCTURAL mimesis, simulacrum, umdrehung-des-platonismus, image-eikon* Strong cross-tradition seam (Plato mimesis ↔ Deleuze/Klossowski simulacrum ↔ Carbone arche-screen) — a future weave candidate, not among the 7 in-scope pairs.
8 priority of soul / soul as self-mover / soul rules body 3 (Phaedo, Epinomis, Laws) THEME priority-of-soul, tripartite-soul Two registers (soul-rules-body vs soul-prior-to-body/cosmic); does less cross-source argumentative work. Could rise to STRUCTURAL if Phaedrus self-mover (245c) + Laws X counted (→ 4–5).
9 flux / Heraclitean becoming / "everything flows" 3 (Cratylus, Theaetetus, Timaeus) THEME heracliteanism*, being-becoming*, flux-doctrine* Cratylus note flags cross-tradition HUB potential (Heraclitus→Bergson→MP). Held THEME (cross-tradition link unverified); flag for future weave (Plato flux ↔ Bergson durée ↔ MP perception-as-flow).

* = wiki-home slug that may be a stub/missing — see §5.

§2 — Cross-tradition BRIDGE entries (6 genuine + 1 routed-out)

All are exactly-2-tradition links (BRIDGE weight, never HUB). 3 link Plato↔German-Idealism (Hegel), not Plato↔phenomenology specifically.

  1. anamnesis (Plato) ↔ Stiftung/sedimentation (Husserl→MP) — cousin anamnesis-stiftung-cross-tradition-cousins. False-friend HIGH: both answer the Meno problem by making acquisition presuppose prior possession, but Plato's prior = eternal/individual/closed deposit; Stiftung = historical/intersubjective/open founding. *has cross-tradition cousin*, never *shares mechanism with*.
  2. khōra/receptacle (Timaeus) ↔ flesh/matrixed-ontology (MP/Kaushik) — cousin khora-third-kind-mp-third-domain. False-friend HIGH + internally flagged (Derrida's Khōra argues it resists exactly this appropriation). Doubles as the Timaeus PRIMARY anchor for the existing matrix/khōra HUB (previously MP-reception-only) — see §3.
  3. peras/apeiron (Philebus) ↔ Hegel's Maß/measure (changement-quantite-qualite) — cousin peras-apeiron-hegel-masz. False-friend MED-HIGH: engine reversed (Plato's limit from-above/static, no Aufhebung; Hegel's measure immanent + nodal leap).
  4. Sophist non-being-as-difference (to heteron) ↔ Hegel's bestimmte Negation — cousin sophist-not-being-as-difference-vs-determinate-negation. False-friend HIGH: heteron is determinate negation minus its engine (no Aufhebung/contradiction/movement); static distributive otherness.
  5. Cave/the Good (Republic) ↔ aletheia/unconcealment (Heidegger) — cousin republic-cave-aletheia-orthotes. Diagnostic (not convergence) relation; must cross-reference Heidegger's 1964 retraction (heidegger-1973-parmenides-retraction supported; aletheia-wahrheit-1964-self-correction candidate) — do not assert as Heidegger's settled view.
  6. Phaedrus pharmakon / writing-critique ↔ MP writing-and-living/sedimentation — cousin mp-writing-and-living-inverts-phaedrus. Valence-inversion (same vocabulary, opposite evaluation); Derrida (Pharmacie de Platon) is the philological middle term but the pair is Plato↔MP. *has cross-tradition cousin*.

ROUTED OUT — not a BRIDGE entry: peras/apeiron ↔ khōra is intra-Plato (same-author) — BRIDGE requires linking traditions. Route to a concept-page typed connection (and note the §B register-over-strong finding in the coherence report: currently *shares mechanism with*, arguably over-strong vs the candidate claim).

§3 — Weight-shifts on existing motifs (4)

  1. fire/ignition/spark (existing HUB) — ADD plato-letter-7 as a Plato-PRIMARY attestation. Letter VII 341c–d ("like light flashing forth when a fire is kindled, it is born in the soul"), 340b ("on fire with philosophy"), 344b (reason "illuminates"). Supplies the missing Platonic node between Heraclitus B217 (current philological anchor) and Schelling/MP. Does NOT change the HUB weight → attestation-enrichment, auto-approved (verify locus before applying). Actionable now.
  2. matrix/khōra/receptacle (existing HUB) — confirm the Timaeus PRIMARY anchor is reflected in the entry's Sources/genealogy (per the 2026-06-21 ingest + cousin #2). No weight change. Note: matrixed-ontology.md still says "5 sources" while khora.md/motifs.md say "6" — staleness fix (also in coherence report). Flag.
  3. mimesis/eikōn — consider a dedicated Plato-side STRUCTURAL entry (proposed §1 #7) rather than leaving it distributed under the "ontological rehabilitation of the sensible" THEME. Flag (= §1 #7 adjudication).
  4. flux — flag for future weave Pass 3 (Plato flux ↔ Bergson durée ↔ MP perception-as-flow); not an entry now. Flag.

§4 — GOVERNANCE HALT: two HUB/STRUCTURAL boundary calls

Per the standing Pre-Authorization Defaults, HUB↔STRUCTURAL motif changes disagreeing with aggregate-motifs.py halt for confirmation. Two proposed entries are HUB-weight within the Plato sub-corpus (7 attestations each):

  • #1 Forms / X-itself (7 Plato sources)
  • #3 being vs becoming / seeming (7 Plato sources)

Drafter recommendation + orchestrator concurrence: STRUCTURAL for both. Rationale: the cross-author (non-Plato) attestation is thin — the wiki engages the Forms and being/becoming chiefly as the anti-Platonic target of MP/Carbone/Deleuze, not as positively shared motifs; corpus-HUB requires cross-tradition spread these lack. Placing at STRUCTURAL also agrees with the script's non-HUB classification (the script lists 10 specific HUBs; neither of these is among them). The HUB-window being in-window means there is no "widen-the-window" pressure to promote.

→ Maintainer adjudication requested at the Wave-A checkpoint: confirm STRUCTURAL for #1 and #3 (or override either to corpus-HUB). The other 7 entries (STRUCTURAL ≤5 / THEME / BRIDGE) do not cross the HUB boundary and are auto-approved as direct-attestation aggregation.

§5 — Stub / missing wiki-home flags (verify before/at write)

Wiki-home slugs cited above that may not yet exist as pages (creating a wikilink to a non-existent page is permitted — lint flags it as a stub): participation-methexis, separation-chorismos, the-between-metaxu, diairesis, periagoge, being-becoming, appearance-reality, heracliteanism, flux-doctrine, image-eikon, third-man-argument. (form-of-the-good, the-divided-line, allegory-of-the-cave exist — verified.) The Republic note nominates form-of-the-good/the-divided-line/allegory-of-the-cave as corpus-defining — they are already homed. At write time: prefer existing slugs for wiki_homes; cite stubs only where no homed page exists, and record them for a stub-creation pass.

§6 — Routing

  • Post-checkpoint (this run): apply the motifs.md delta — §1 entries (#1/#3 at the confirmed weight), §2 BRIDGE entries (6), §3.1 fire-HUB attestation. One motifs.md write, one commit. Then aggregate-motifs.py is NOT used to gate (buggy); refresh_baselines.py per Rule 19.
  • Phase 4: the matrixed-ontology "6 sources" staleness fix (§3.2).
  • Follow-up weave (separate run): the mimesis↔simulacrum and flux↔durée cross-tradition scans (§3.3–3.4) + the peras-apeiron↔khōra typed-connection placement.
