Audit Phase 3 — Motifs Delta (2026-06-01)

Subsequent run (motifs.md last substantively updated 2026-05-30 with the Gadamer ingest). Maintainer authorizations this run: (1) "push past the threshold" (Step 3.1.5 re-test trigger); (2) "use subagents (Opus 4.8 max effort) if advantageous"; (3) challenge to re-examine a Schelling↔Simmel shared motif.

The 100-vs-79 gap is chunked primary sources (Hegel Phenomenology = 12 chunk-notes; Heidegger Zur Sache = 4; Hegel WdL = 3) — each counted once as a distinct source for threshold purposes.

Mechanical aggregation (scripts/aggregate-motifs.py) was run (output captured to /tmp/motif-agg-2026-06-01.md). It reported only 6 HUB / 5 STRUCTURAL / 704 distinct motif keys — not usable as an oracle, for two structural reasons the script's own docstring flags:

  • Motif-name fragmentation: normalize() keys on the first variant before /, so "silence / mute meaning" and "world of silence" become different keys; true recurrence scatters → most motifs fall to BELOW-THRESHOLD.
  • Chunked-source over-counting: it counts extraction-note files as sources, so Hegel chunks register as "4 sources" for Bildung; within-note repeats double-count (Madison ×3 for archeology).

Per the Phase 3 design, the script does bookkeeping; the corpus-weight judgment is human. This run's judgments were made by reading the extraction notes directly, then independently verified by subagents (§4).

2. What was already folded (no action)

Verified by git log -- wiki/motifs.md + signature greps: Gadamer (2026-05-30; 5 entries gained attestations + a negative-Stiftung false-friend), Derrida On Touching / Nancy Fragile Skin (2026-05-27; 4 new HUB: haptocentric tradition, the hand, Nancy-operators, Christian body), Schelling 1809 (6 new STRUCTURAL), Lawlor 2003, Morin 2022, Madison 1981 are all folded. The frontmatter updated: was stale at 2026-05-28 (Gadamer committed motifs.md on 2026-05-30 without bumping it) — corrected to 2026-06-01, and the header source-count line corrected (79/100).

Simmel 1923 On Love — assessed, contributes no standalone entry (single-source; the extraction note itself ruled THEME-level). Its Mehr-als-Leben enters the corpus layer only via the new Schelling↔Simmel BRIDGE (§3, §5).

The one substantive gap: Derrida Beast & Sovereign I + II (2026-05-27). The On-Touching commit folded only the touch/haptocentric register; the sovereignty / animal / Walten register of the two B&S volumes was never aggregated (the ingest deferred it to Phase 3 — the designed handoff). This run closes that gap.

3. Proposed entries (before verification)

From the B&S cluster + the maintainer's Schelling↔Simmel challenge, 5 candidate entries were drafted and 2 attestation-adds + 1 deferral identified. All cross-source spread was first confirmed by grep (which extraction-note files contain each term). Sovereignty was deferred at this stage (see §6).

4. Adversarial verification round (5 Opus subagents, one per entry)

Per maintainer authorization to use subagents, each proposed entry was handed to an independent Opus 4.8 verifier with an adversarial stance (assume over-claim until the extraction notes prove otherwise), read-only, returning per-attestation PASS/UNCERTAIN/FAIL + a weight recommendation + over-reach flags. The round materially narrowed the batch — exactly its purpose.

Schelling↔Simmel BRIDGE NARROW/re-scope. All 10 anchors verified verbatim, 0 fabrication. But the headline over-claimed: das Band ("each could exist for itself") is compositional in precondition, in tension with Simmel's anti-compositional "no mediating instance." Real convergence = love as ungrounded-and-primary, not "non-compositional bond." Divergence (Schelling "soul of hate is love" vs Simmel "opposite is indifference") is a difference of emphasis, not contradiction. Net new entries: 1 HUB (Walten) · 2 STRUCTURAL (the animal; auto-affection) · 1 THEME (the uncanny) · 1 BRIDGE (Schelling↔Simmel). Verification value: 1 entry survived unchanged (Walten); 2 downgraded a weight class (animal HUB→STRUCT, uncanny STRUCT→THEME); 1 narrowed its evidence base (auto-affection 6→3); 1 re-scoped its thesis (Schelling↔Simmel). 0 fabrications, ~5 over-reaches caught (3 inflated/inverted attestations + 1 anachronism + 1 imputation).

5. The Schelling↔Simmel finding (maintainer challenge) — verified

The maintainer challenged the "Simmel single-source, no entry" call. Verification (both extraction notes, raw-anchored) confirms a genuine BRIDGE:

  • Schelling 1809: love = das Band ("secret of love," ~line 653); Wille der Liebe makes the Ungrund productive; "the soul of all hate is love" (line 623); theodicy of life ("God is not a system but a life," line 619); Ungrund ← Böhme (note 92).
  • Simmel 1923: Mehr-als-Leben (love a surplus life produces, not composes); no mediating instance ("does not need a bridge, which separates just as it connects"); love-ungroundedness ← Eckhart ("exclusively because He exists").
  • Shared root: German mysticism (Böhme ↔ Eckhart; the ohne Warum register already tracked under rose / "rose without why" + Ungrund).
  • Re-scoped per verifier: convergence = love as ungrounded-and-primary (not "non-compositional bond" — das Band is compositional in precondition); divergence = emphasis on the love/hate/indifference triangle; relation typed has cross-tradition cousin.

The original call was wrong for a diagnosable reason: it judged Simmel in isolation rather than against the corpus — which is precisely the cross-source aggregation Phase 3 exists to perform.

6. Sovereignty — assessed and DEFERRED (not promoted)

The B&S master-frame motif sovereignty / ipse / autoposition was assessed and held off motifs.md:

  • B&S I + B&S II treat it as the master-frame, but that is one author's two-volume seminar → fails the cross-author bar (BRIDGE requires linking traditions; intra-Derrida does not).
  • The Mendoza-Canales "sovereignty" grep-hit is reader-sovereignty (MP Signs p. 12, on reading/expression) — not political-theological sovereignty. A near-miss the verification caught (without it, a fabricated M-C political-sovereignty attestation would have entered the entry).
  • Held on the sovereignty concept page as a BRIDGE-candidate, pending a verified cross-tradition anchor (Hegelian Herrschaft / lordship, or Bataille's souveraineté). Recorded in motifs.md under "Deferred / under-threshold candidates."
  • survivance (B&S I+II, intra-author) similarly stays on survivance, not motifs.md.

7. Threshold recalibration (Step 3.1.5) — maintainer pre-authorized

  • HUB-section count 55 → 56; sources 79. The 2026-05-21 re-test trigger ("corpus past ~80 sources OR HUB-section > ~55") is crossed.
  • Scaled window (6, 15) × 79/29 ≈ (16, 41); 56 exceeds the upper bound — same structural cause as 2026-05-21 (dense multi-tradition primary-source ingests). The corpus now spans ≥6 traditions.
  • Decision (maintainer pre-authorized 2026-06-01): retain the 5+/3+ thresholds; push past the trigger. The window is a diagnostic, not a cap, for a multi-tradition corpus. Next review at ~110 source pages OR HUB-section > ~65. Recorded in the motifs.md header.

8. Residual flags / follow-ups

  • the-uncanny — no dedicated page; THEME entry awaits a verified non-Derrida anchor (SuZ Unheimlichkeit motif-tracked, or an MP-écart development) to rise to STRUCTURAL.
  • the animal question — candidate for a dedicated problem-space page (caesura / continuity / deconstruction three-way) and a weave Pass 3 structural-isomorphism scan (MP interanimality vs Derrida's "biological continuism").
  • sovereignty — weave Pass 3 candidate: test the (unverified) survol/pensée-de-survol ↔ sovereign-overview cross-tradition cousinhood; and seek a Hegelian-Herrschaft anchor.
  • person / inventory-impossible register (Marcel ↔ Mounier ↔ MP, Simmel cousin) — still deferred from 2026-05-28; now also a candidate cousin to the Schelling↔Simmel Mehr-als-Leben register.
  • Step 8.5 (not this phase): the new HUB page walten and the betise/sovereignty pages may warrant ## Motif Weight & Corpus Recurrence back-reference sections — flagged for a weave Pass 4 / audit Step 8.5 pass.

9. Files touched

wiki/motifs.md (header date/count/threshold; 2 attestation-adds; +1 HUB, +2 STRUCT, +1 THEME, +1 BRIDGE entry; consolidation + deferred-candidate flags), this report.
