Layer 2 Backfill — Pass 3 Part D for under-mined extraction notes (2026-05-09)

Operation type: Phase-8 candidate gap closure (between-run, scoped). Authorization: User directive 2026-05-09 ("do the layer 2 backfill") in the same session that diagnosed the gap. Coordination with ongoing audit: The 13th Phase 8 run is mid-flight as of this writing (Step 8.9 cite-back is in progress; the run will then move back to Step 8.5 → 8.7 → 8.8 to complete the optional concept-page upgrade wave and the report/confidence-addendum). The unsaved 13th-run log entry's claim of step-by-step 8.1→8.9 completion is preliminary; the actual closing sequence per user is 8.9 (in-flight) → 8.5 → 8.7-8.8. This backfill does not interfere with the in-flight 12th run because Step 8.2's walk already completed before these candidates existed. Candidates produced here are queued for the 13th Phase 8 run (the next walk, after the in-flight 12th closes). No claims.md writes occurred in this operation.

Why this operation exists

The session's preceding diagnostic identified two layered gaps in the wiki's claim-candidate coverage:

  • Schema gap (Layer 1): 30 extraction notes written before Pass 3 Part D ("Claim Candidates") was a standard part of the audit Phase 8 protocol. These notes lack the formal candidate section. Most have nonetheless been mined for claims via the older Phase 8 walk pattern (reading Pass 2a/2b directly).
  • Substantive gap (Layer 2): 5 sources that are both Layer-1 (no formal Part D) and under-mined in claims.md (≤1 references), meaning Phase 8 has effectively never reached them through any route.

The Layer 2 list:

Source Pre-backfill claim refs Notes
sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant 0 Sartre's Merleau-Ponty Vivant manuscript (JBSP 1984); structurally surprising 0 coverage
alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy 1 14-essay edited volume; multiple chapters merit candidates
carbone-2019-philosophy-screens (extraction note carbone-2016-philosophy-screens) 1 Carbone primary; under-represented vs his 2004/2015 sister volumes
chouraqui-2016-order-of-the-earth 1 Companion paper to Circulus Vitiosus Deus (which has multiple supported claims)
chouraqui-2021-body-and-embodiment 1 Body/embodiment is HUB-weight; one claim is suspiciously low

The schema gate for "Layer 2" was: NO-CC + ≤1 claim references. Sources with NO-CC but high reference counts (e.g., merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible at 48, merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity at 51) are Layer-1-only and were not backfilled in this operation; they have been effectively mined and only need formal Part D for procedural cleanup.

What was done

For each of the 5 Layer 2 sources, a ### Part D — Claim Candidates section was appended to the existing extraction note, drafted from the existing Pass 2a/2b/2c content and following the format established by the recent Heinbokel 2021 extraction note (which is the canonical post-protocol reference template). Each Part D contains 5 candidates (25 total across the batch), with the per-candidate fields:

  • Slug (lowercase hyphenated, semantically distinctive)
  • Claim type tag (genealogical / philological / corrective / interpretive / structural-parallel / etc.)
  • Status (candidate per Layer 2 backfill convention)
  • Seed evidence (passage anchors with locations)
  • Counterpressure (at least one rival reading or limit, often multiple)
  • Wiki homes (target concept/entity pages or new pages)
  • Promotion potential (forecast verdict against the 3-test gate at the next walk)

False-friend cautions are flagged inline where the candidate is structurally tempting but exegetically risky.

Each Part D opens with a backfill provenance note marking the operation date and the explicit queued for 13th-run, not 11th-run coordination.

Candidate inventory by source

sartre-1984-merleau-ponty-vivant (5 candidates)

  1. sartre-childhood-as-philosophical-genealogy — genealogical/interpretive. The 1934 (not 1953) dating of MP/Sartre divergence, grounded in their two childhoods. Live-eligible.
  2. mp-silent-marxist-temptation — corrective/philological. MP's pre-WWII interior Marxist commitment per Sartre's manuscript; tension with existing supported mp-marxism-unabandonable. Candidate-only until raw-source check.
  3. envelopment-as-sartrean-cardinal-reading — philological/corrective. Sartre's reading of envelopement as MP's foundational principle is a Sartrean structuring not directly present in MP's corpus. Live-eligible.
  4. bn-freedom-not-applicable-to-historical-man — corrective/interpretive. Sartre's near-retraction of B&N total-freedom in MP's direction. Live-eligible.
  5. sartre-1961-enacts-mp-good-ambiguity — methodological/structural-parallel. The manuscript performs MP's good ambiguity. Candidate; structural-parallel test required for live promotion.

alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy (5 candidates)

  1. flesh-three-senses-barbaras-tripartition — philological/corrective. Barbaras's ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition vs MP's univocal use. Live-eligible.
  2. whiteness-as-institutional-habit — structural/political-extension. Ahmed's extension of habitual body to institutions. Live-eligible.
  3. being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure — interpretive/structural-parallel. Perceptual faith and power share recognition+institution structure. Live-eligible if related to existing supported circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology. False-friend caution flagged.
  4. flesh-panpsychism-mcweeny-stress-test — interpretive/stress-test, with rejection bias. McWeeny's panpsychism reading of flesh; Barbaras and MP's May 1960 working note rebut. Candidate-only; recommended posture is dialectical Position framing not promotion.
  5. museum-stiftung-against-hegel-and-malraux — genealogical/corrective. Stiftung as power-to-forget-origins refuses both Hegelian teleology and Malrucian creation. Live-eligible.

carbone-2019-philosophy-screens (5 candidates)

  1. mp-precession-supplants-circularity-1960 — philological/corrective. Carbone's archival argument from the Grand Résumé that MP corrects "Circularity, and precession" to "Circularity, but rather precession." Live after raw-source check.
  2. arche-screen-as-musical-theme-not-platonic-form — corrective/structural. Carbone's neologism. Live-eligible.
  3. mp-only-philosopher-listening-to-cinema — genealogical/corrective. Among Sartre/Deleuze/MP, only late MP genuinely listens to cinema. Live if scoped; candidate if held to the strong "only" framing.
  4. mp-1945-idhec-silently-polemical-against-bergson — philological/corrective. The IDHEC lecture as silent polemic against Creative Evolution ch. 4. Live-eligible.
  5. dividuation-not-individuation-as-screen-condition — corrective/structural. Carbone's coinage against Simondon. Candidate; first clause separable from second; false-friend caution flagged.

chouraqui-2016-order-of-the-earth (5 candidates)

  1. erde-to-copernican-necessary-hypostatization — corrective/interpretive. The Erde→Copernican Earth movement as necessary continuity, not break, against Heidegger's Spiegel reading. Live-eligible; coheres with existing supported circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology.
  2. mp-takes-husserl-further-than-husserl-intended — interpretive/genealogical. The Ur-Arche text contains an excess MP exploits. Live-eligible; cross-source via mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib.
  3. leib-korper-erde-copernican-double-analogy — philological/structural-parallel. MP describes earth and body in identical terms in the same weeks of 1959–60. Live after raw-source check on the lecture sequencing.
  4. hyper-dialectic-as-philosophy-non-philosophy-theory — interpretive/structural/problem-space. Hyper-dialectic as theory of philosophy/non-philosophy relation. Live-eligible; coheres with existing supported circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology.
  5. chouraqui-vs-barbaras-on-mp-dynamic-ontology — interpretive/disputed-attribution. The "purely historical" disagreement that hides a substantive dispute. Candidate-only; strong false-friend caution; promotion blocked until Barbaras's Dynamique de la Manifestation is ingested or otherwise adjudicated.

chouraqui-2021-body-and-embodiment (5 candidates)

  1. embodiment-disproves-sovereignty — interpretive/structural-parallel. Embodiment's reciprocity makes sovereign power a self-contradiction. Live-eligible; coheres with existing supported circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology and with Layer 2 candidate being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure.
  2. synthetic-vs-analytic-ambiguity-distinction — clarification/structural/philological. Chouraqui's gloss of MP's good ambiguity as synthetic, vs analytic ambiguity as pathological. Live-eligible.
  3. schneider-female-embodiment-structural-parallel — structural-parallel/interpretive. Endorsing Young: Schneider's pathology and female embodiment under patriarchy share an exact structural parallel. Live-eligible.
  4. irreducibility-as-productive-failure — interpretive/narrative/problem-space. The book's historiographic thesis: 2,500 years of Western philosophy as productive failures. Candidate; false-friend caution flagged on the structural-parallel triple test.
  5. reverse-asceticism-as-capitalist-body-discipline — corrective/political/philological-coinage. Capitalism as inverted asceticism. Candidate; false-friend caution flagged on the Marx/Foucault yoking and on the historical-asceticism counterpressure.

Cross-source claim relations surfaced during the backfill

Several candidates from this batch share structural territory and should be considered together at the next Phase 8 walk:

  • Chouraqui's politics-ontology homology family:

    • existing supported: circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology
    • new candidates: being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure (Alloa volume ch. 9), embodiment-disproves-sovereignty (Body and Embodiment ch. 9)
    • Recommendation: at the next Phase 8 walk, consider whether these three claims unify into a single supported "Chouraqui's recognition-and-institution operator across ontology and politics" thesis, or remain three siblings.
  • Schneider concept-page interpretive options:

    • existing live: case-report-as-coherent-deformation (Heinbokel)
    • new candidates: schneider-female-embodiment-structural-parallel (Body and Embodiment), synthetic-vs-analytic-ambiguity-distinction (Body and Embodiment)
    • Recommendation: the schneider-case concept page should track all three readings as Positions rather than picking one. The wiki's typed-link enacts may be the right register for the parallel.
  • Husserl Ur-Arche / Erde / late-ontology family:

    • existing supported: mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib, circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology
    • new candidates: mp-takes-husserl-further-than-husserl-intended, leib-korper-erde-copernican-double-analogy, erde-to-copernican-necessary-hypostatization, hyper-dialectic-as-philosophy-non-philosophy-theory
    • Recommendation: a 13th-run Phase 8 walk could meaningfully unify several of these into a small cluster of supported claims if the targeted raw-source checks (HuLP 75–76, V&I 228, the Grand Résumé of Nov 1960, the 1959–60 lecture sequencing) are discharged in sequence.
  • Sartre/MP genealogical relations:

    • existing live: h-and-t-anticipates-sartre-mp-rupture, faire-etre-vs-faire-exister-as-mp-sartre-axis
    • new candidates: sartre-childhood-as-philosophical-genealogy, bn-freedom-not-applicable-to-historical-man, envelopment-as-sartrean-cardinal-reading, mp-silent-marxist-temptation
    • Recommendation: the existing Sartre/MP claims locate the rupture; the new candidates push the dating earlier (1934) and add the manuscript-vs-published distinction. A 13th-run consolidation could yield a more coherent Sartre/MP genealogical track.
  • Mutual precession (vision-precession vs earth-precession):

    • existing supported: circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology (earth-precession route via Chouraqui)
    • new candidate: mp-precession-supplants-circularity-1960 (vision-precession route via Carbone)
    • Recommendation: the precession concept page should track both as distinct readings of a single late-MP motif, not collapse them.

Per artifact-conservatism (General Rule 18), several candidates depend on philological precision that should be verified against raw sources before promotion above candidate:

  1. Sartre 1984 manuscript p. 150 — the silent-Marxism passage, especially MP's reported remark "the proletariat could no longer be considered the bearer of human values." Raw check: raw/datalab-output-sartre1984.pdf.md.
  2. MP's Grand Résumé of V&I (Nov 1960) — the "Circularity, but rather precession" revision (Carbone ch. 2 p. 45). Raw check: V&I working notes, Nov 1960 entry.
  3. MP 1959–60 lecture sequencing — verify that the Husserl Ur-Arche course and the Nature course were indeed concurrent ("the same weeks") per Chouraqui 2016 Order of the Earth §2 p. 60. Raw checks: raw/Husserl at the Limits of Phenomenology...md + raw/Merleau-Ponty_Séglard_2003_Nature_course_notes.md.
  4. MP's IDHEC lecture (1945) "Le cinéma et la nouvelle psychologie" vs Bergson's Creative Evolution ch. 4 — verify the silently-polemical reading per Carbone ch. 2 pp. 9–28. The IDHEC lecture is in Sense and Non-Sense (cited in merleau-ponty-1964-primacy-of-perception source page).

What this batch does NOT do

  • Does not add any entries to wiki/claims.md.
  • Does not modify any concept or entity pages.
  • Does not revise any source-page Core Arguments / Concepts Developed sections.
  • Does not discharge cite-back, Step 8.5 upgrades, or other in-flight 11th-run obligations.

The operation is exclusively at the extraction-note layer, producing the formal Pass 3 Part D artifact that subsequent Phase 8 walks can harvest from.

Counts after operation

  • 5 extraction notes received Part D (each appended in place; no rewrites)
  • 25 new candidate slugs articulated (5 × 5)
  • 6 false-friend cautions flagged (across flesh-panpsychism-mcweeny, dividuation-not-individuation, chouraqui-vs-barbaras, irreducibility-as-productive-failure, reverse-asceticism, being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure)
  • 4 targeted raw-source checks queued for the 13th-run walk
  • 0 wiki-page edits beyond the 5 extraction-note appends
  • 0 claims.md writes
  • 1 audit report written (this file)

Closing

This file is the canonical record of the operation. Update AUDIT_PLAN.md "Phase 8" history to note the Layer 2 backfill (between 12th and 13th runs) at the next AUDIT_PLAN revision. Append a wiki/log.md entry under today's date.

When the 13th Phase 8 run begins, its preflight (Step 8.1) should:

  1. Read this report's candidate inventory.
  2. Run the 25 new candidates through the standard 3-test gate.
  3. Discharge the four targeted raw-source checks before promoting any candidate that depends on them.
  4. Consider the four cross-source claim relations (Chouraqui homology family, Schneider concept-page Positions, Husserl Ur-Arche cluster, Sartre/MP genealogy) for unification or sibling treatment.
  5. Apply false-friend cautions as listed.

Promotion to supported for any of these 25 candidates remains halted for human review per the durable rule (CLAUDE.md, audit skill).

Post-commit note: commit boundary deviation (added in follow-up)

The commit that landed this Layer 2 backfill — 98e95fa ("audit: Layer 2 backfill — Pass 3 Part D for 5 under-mined extraction notes") — bundled the in-flight 12th-run files in addition to the 7 Layer-2 files that were intended to be the commit's scope. The user had explicitly chosen "Selectively commit only my 7 files (Recommended)" before the commit ran. Despite an explicit git add listing only 7 paths, the resulting commit included 38 files:

  • 7 Layer-2 files (intended): the 5 extraction-note Part D appends, this audit report, and the wiki/log.md Layer-2 entry.
  • 31 in-flight 12th-run files (unintended): wiki/claims.md with all 12th-run promotions; ~25 concept pages with cite-back / Step-8.5 work; wiki/index.md, wiki/overview.md count-line updates; wiki/entities/luca-taddio.md; two question pages; the 12th-run report file wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-09-twelfth-run.md (which had been untracked at the moment of git add).

The over-commit was not what the user authorized. After the user adjudicated, the chosen remediation was: leave the over-commit in place; document the deviation here and in the log, rather than rewrite local history with git reset HEAD~1 + restage + recommit.

Cause investigation: not conclusively determined. Local inspection found no .git/hooks/pre-commit, no .claude/settings.json hook configuration, and no git-config commit/add/alias settings that would explain auto-staging. The most likely candidates are an environment-level zsh alias propagating to the Bash tool, a global git hook outside the repository, or a tool-layer behavior at the time of git commit that staged un-staged tracked files and the one untracked file in wiki/.audit/. Recommend adding this failure mode to a future lint or audit check if it recurs (e.g., a pre-commit verification that git diff --cached --name-only matches the explicit git add argument list before invoking commit).

What this means for downstream interpretation:

  1. The 12th-run claim-state delta (116 → 119 entries; 13 → 16 supported; 54 → 56 live; 48 → 46 candidate) is now in master but its commit is not the canonical 12th-run commit — it is 98e95fa's incidental cargo. A future AUDIT_PLAN.md revision should record this carefully (i.e., the 12th run's actual close commit was 98e95fa, not a future "audit: Phase 8 (12th run) — close" commit).
  2. The 12th run's Step 8.5 → 8.7 → 8.8 closing work, if any remains beyond what was already in the working tree at the time of 98e95fa, will need its own commit; the 12th run is partially committed by 98e95fa and partially outstanding (whatever the user does next in the in-flight run).
  3. Step 8.9 cite-back work that landed in 98e95fa should be cross-validated against the 12th-run report (also bundled in 98e95fa) — they should be consistent since both came from the same uncommitted working tree.
  4. git log --oneline will show 98e95fa titled "audit: Layer 2 backfill — Pass 3 Part D for 5 under-mined extraction notes" but its file footprint is dominated by 12th-run work. Anyone reading the history must consult this audit report for the actual scope.

This deviation does not invalidate the Layer 2 backfill substance: the 25 candidates exist as expected in the 5 extraction notes, the audit report is accurate within its scope, and the 13th-run handoff guidance stands. The deviation is purely about the commit boundary, which is a presentation/history artifact, not a content artifact.
